Empire Day
Hera's P.O.V
I was just set the Ghost to autopilot and watched as we entered hyperspace. I closed my eyes for a moment to take in the peace and quiet as everyone went to bed after a long day. When Kanan and Ezra returned from the base, Ezra didn't look like himself. I could tell that he must of been through a lot today so I left him alone like Kanan told me.
I opened my eyes again then stood up since we are going to be in hyperspace for a while. Falling asleep wouldn't be an option until arriving at the destination.
As I walked down the halls, there was some talking coming from the nose gun. Quietly, I made my way closer until peeking around the corner to see a light on the other side of the chair.
"I really miss you guys. I-I wish you were here to celebrate my birthday with me," a familiar voice said.
I could tell that it was Ezra and the way he spoke was the total opposite of the teen. Sad.
What really caught my attention was a sniffle. I wanted to go in so badly and squeeze the sadness out of him but that wouldn't help the situation. If he really needed someone to comfort him then he can always come to one of us for it.
With all the willpower, I quietly walked to the kitchen to make a coffee. Then went back to the cockpit and sat down in my seat enjoying the passing stars nursing a cup of coffee.
I almost jumped and spilled my coffee when the door suddenly slid open. I turned to glare whoever just startled me but calmed seeing Ezra hugging himself. I began to worry and asked, "Ezra...what are you doing still awake and what's wrong?"
"Oh uh, sorry, Hera. I didn't know you were in here," he said scratching the back of his head. I knew Ezra was just avoiding my questions but let it slide for now. I just nodded then turned in my seat asking, "Want to join me?" It didn't take long for him to take the seat next to me.
We sat there in silence and enjoying the blue hue of hyperspace. I took a sip of my drink when Ezra suddenly started to talk.
"Do you think my parents are still alive?" He asked. I almost spit my coffee out in surprise but kept it down.
I remembered Tseebo telling me what happened to his parents. Yet, there was something telling me not to say anything about it. So instead, I told him something else.
"I don't know but don't give up hope that they might still be out there," I said and saw a small smile spread across his face.
"Thanks, Hera. I needed to hear that," he said.
"Anytime," I replied returning the smile.
"...and, I also guess..." Ezra trailed off looking away from me embarrassed. I just waited for him to continue but could tell that he needed a little push. "You guess what?" I asked curiously.
"I guess....I guess I'm also asking for a hug..." He said looking at the floor. I smiled and felt my heart melt with joy. I set my cup down and stood up from my seat then spread my arms out. He hesitated before standing and settling into my arms.
Ezra didn't hug back still unsure but I did. I combed my fingers through his long hair and rested my chin on top of his head. "You don't have to be embarrassed to ask for a hug," I continued whispering, "Happy birthday."
That's when arms wrapped around me and a muffled, "thank you," was heard.
I smiled and replied, "No problem, Ezra."
He soon let go after a while and was smiling a bit. "I'm going to bed," he said making his way to the door.
"Goodnight," I said and he left. I sat in my seat once again and watched the stars pass by.
