Part 2: The Horrible Truth
*the next day*
Hera's P.O.V
I convinced Kanan to watch Ezra while I talk to the other victim of the crash. The driver that killed two adults and lost a child's memory. Ahsoka gave me the files on the victim and to my surprise, there was barely anything in it. Just one slip of paper with a phone number.
It was like this person didn't exist...or trying to hide under the radar. Something was off and I was going to figure it out.
I opened the metal door to the hallway of prison cells. I walked passed by the prisoners that were either shouting, threatening, complimenting, or just staring at me creepily. I ignored them all and focused on the main goal, the driver's cell.
Once arriving, the prisoner was sitting on a bed and looking at the floor. To my shock, it was a woman and she reminded me of someone.
"Did you need something officer?" The woman asked politely. I raised an eyebrow and asked, "What's your name?"
"That's classified," she answered.
"Don't waste your time, Syndulla," Zeb spoke, walking up next to me.
"We put her in interrogation ten minutes ago and said everything was classified or just didn't answer."
I suspiciously looked over at the woman as Zeb added.
"The only thing she gave us was that phone number."
I opened the file to see the slip of paper with the number. It didn't make sense. Was there no other information from any other state?
"Are you sure there is no other information from anywhere in the world?" I asked. Zeb shrugged, "We talked with some people, see if anyone knew her but nothing came up."
I began to think a little more while carefully eyeing the woman. There was something about her that was flickering my light switch but the light bulb just wouldn't stay on. Then...the resemblance began to grasp as I asked, "Do you know a child named, Ezra?"
That really got the woman's attention and a small smirk formed onto my face as I was getting somewhere.
"Yes...," she said, "What mother would forget their child?" My eyes glanced over, with a small smirk, to see Zeb wide eyed. I turned back to her before realization set on me. If she caused the accident...with her family in the car...
A sick feeling began to churn in my stomach. This woman made me feel sick. The car crash was no accident. The hospital said that the driver was drunk while driving. Lothal was known for having drunks but this was the first woman that I've seen put in here from drunk driving.
That's why I was shocked to see her. Now, I am mad and feel no pity for her. She diliberitlpy drove drunk with her husband and child. Why in the world would the husband even allow it especially with their only child!
Then killed an innocent bystander and lose their child's memories. Does she realize that she could of killed her own child? On top of that, she was the only one that came out without barely a scratch!
My hands clenched on the jail bars and grinder my teeth together.
"You make me sick! How could you do that and not remotely feel a little bad about it right now!" I yelled.
"Not...feel bad. NOT FEEL BAD!" She yelled, finally looking up at me with anger in her swollen, red eyes.
"I feel terrible that it's literally tearing me to shreds! I'm broken on the inside! My husband, the love of my life, is dead because of me! My child has amnesia because of me! I killed someone that still had their whole life ahead of them! And on top of all of that, I COME OUT FINE! DON'T YOU DARE SAY THAT I DO NOT FEEL BAD WHEN I ALREADY FEEL LIKE KILLING MYSELF BUT NO! I AM GOING TO STAY AND ROT IN JAIL BECAUSE I DESERVE IT!"
At the end, tears ran down her face and she breathed heavily. My eyes widen as I saw it now. The pain. The guilt. The fear. It all scrambled into one big mess that made her what she was now. A broken person with no chance to recover from her misery.
I narrowed my eyes at her before darkly saying, "Well, you should have thought about that before you turned that engine on."
"You don't know anything about my family. So, shut up," the woman snarled, looking back down at the floor.
"Then tell me and maybe, just maybe, I can help you. Don't you want to get to know the person that is looking after your own child since you obviously can't?" I replied, smoothly. I may have sounded calm but a biting rage and hatred was still lit in me. The woman began to think over it before looking up at me with a sadness.
"How is he?" She asked.
"Besides thankfully not remembering you but tormented by not remembering who he was. He's doing just great," I spat.
"That's alright if he doesn't remember me. I don't deserve to be remembered for what I could've done to him," she said.
"As long as he's in safe arms and come out okay, I don't care."
"You are making really hard to hate you right now but your son will be fine with me," I said, just now noticing Zeb had left. She didn't say anything after that.
"Now, why can't you give me any answers to why you thought it was so smart to drive drunk?" I asked, crossing my arms.
"I may feel bad for what I did but no one, not even the police, has helped us yet. So why should I trust you with my families classified information?" She asked, eyebrow raised.
"I'm not like any other police officer and if you can't see it right now, well you're in jail. Your son is not and is under my care. So I'm protecting him from something I don't know of or understand why that it makes a whole family run and hide," I explained.
"And the only other lead I have is that 'Tseebo' character who doesn't seem to reliable with his age, memory, and you."
"Me?" She questioned, confused.
"You have more information than I'll ever get from that old man. So spill the beans, tell me why you're running," I demanded. I wasn't asking anymore, I was telling her. If there is someone or something after her and her son, then possibly me too. How am I supposed to protect someone if I don't know what danger is going to hit me?
The woman sighed in defeat before looking at me again.
"Fine."
