Amy was currently staring at me, her eyes narrowed slightly. I furrowed my brow as I looked at her. "What is it?"
"You look like you've gotten almost no sleep, Sophie. What happened?"
I sighed. "Just thinking about what happened yesterday."
"Are you okay?"
I nodded, looking away from her. "Yeah, I guess it was just shock."
Amy frowned, obviously not believing me. I simply shrugged it off and went back to eating the sandwich I had gotten. My best friend rolled her eyes before taking a large bite out of hers.
I sighed. "Do you- do you think she knows, Amy?"
"Huh?"
"Like, do you think that she found out? About- you know." I could barely speak. It was stuck in the front of my head. Usually after a night like last night, I could push it away, but now I couldn't.
Amy sighed, setting her sandwich down. "I don't know, Sophie. Who knows what she found out. She probably did."
"How do you figure?"
"Well, she left that note with our names on it. The only one of us that really seemed to know her besides Calvin was Leo. Why our names if there wasn't something important in there?" Amy looked at me, her deep blue eyes burning into mine.
I swallowed nervously. "I'm not ready to tell people."
Amy nodded. "I know, it's okay. Who knows if she knew that part, though? Maybe she put our names in there because she wrote about us often."
I blinked, letting her words sink in. "You're right, that has to be the case."
We continued eating in silence. It didn't last long, though. Amy's ringer went off, and my phone began to vibrate. I sighed as I picked it up.
Calvin: Are you guys doing alright after last night?
Passion: I'm fine, just a little shaken. Wasn't expecting to hear about my past.
Damon: Same here. I barely knew the chick and she seemed to know me.
Jeromy: I'm alright.
Amy: Fine, nothing to be worried about so far.
Calvin: What about you guys, Sophie and Leo? You two seemed to be the most affected.
Sophie: I had some bad food earlier in the day. I was feeling sick all day, don't worry.
Amy looked up at me, raising an eyebrow. I nodded at her. Hopefully she'd believe me.
Amy: Yeah, I got off lucky. She offered to let me try that hotdog, but I didn't like the way it looked. Beats me why you ate it, Soph.
Sophie: I was hungry.
I gave Amy a thankful smile. "Don't worry, everything will be alright, Soph." She said, patting my shoulder.
Calvin: And you, Leo?
Nothing. Leo wasn't talking. I frowned.
Passion: Leo?
Damon: I don't think he'll respond.
Jeromy: Who would want to after everything yesterday.
Calvin: What do you mean?
Jeromy: He obviously cared about Sara, and having to hear about her from a book after her untimely demise must be horrible.
Sophie: Has someone checked up on him?
Damon: Doubt it.
Sophie: Well someone should. He is clearly upset.
Passion: Or just busy...
Sophie: Someone send me his address and I'll check on him.
Amy looked up at me. "How are you gonna get there?"
I sighed. "I don't know, a taxi?"
"They're sapping all your money, Soph."
"Can't you take me?"
"Doctors appointment, remember? And then I have to go to work."
"Right..."
Amy sighed.
Amy: Can someone drive Soph there? She currently can't and she doesn't want to lose more money on can service.
Calvin: I can take her, if she's alright with that.
Amy looked up at me. "Looks like Calvin is taking you."
I nodded.
Sophie: Great! Me and Amy are at the mall right now. She has a doctors appointment and then work which is why she's not taking me.
Calvin: That's all good. I'll be there as soon as I can.
Passion: Why are you two at the mall?
Sophie: Me and Amy are having a girls day before she has to go to an appointment and work.
Passion: Ooo, mani-pedis?
Amy: Not this time. Just food.
Passion: Oh, boring.
Amy: Thanks.
Passion: Next time invite me and I'll show you a real girls day.
Amy: Whatever.
I shut my phone off. "I better get ready to go."
"Yes. Calvin should be here soon."
I began to pack up my stuff, and then grabbed my sandwich. "I'll see you later, Amy."
"Yep!"
"Tell me how the appointment goes, alright?"
"You know I will!"
****
I sat outside the mall, staring at my phone as I carefully ate my sandwich.
Calvin was about five minutes late. I sighed, shutting my phone off. There was no point in expecting him to be here on time. It was last minute, anyways.
Suddenly, my phone buzzed. I glanced down at it.
Him: Sophie?
Sophie: Yes?
Him: Come see me as soon as you can.
Sophie: Well, I'm going to go check on a friend, but as soon as I'm done, I'll come over. What's wrong?
Sophie read his next message. She bit her lip.
Sophie: I'll be there as soon as I can.
As soon as I sent Him the message, the sound of a honking horn was heard. I looked up to see Calvin's car at the front, him waving at me from the wheel. "Sophie! Hey!"
I gathered my stuff up and walked over to the car. I got onto the passenger side and looked towards him as I buckled myself. "Thank you for this, Calvin."
"It's all good. I have nothing planned today, so I'm free to help you out." He was staring at me intently as he started the car. As the engine purred to life, I felt my heart skip a beat.
Most of the drive was quiet. No talking amongst us. I was busy staring out the window, pondering what to say to Leo. We weren't close, but now we were both involved in something.
Plus, I knew what it was like to lose someone you cared about at such a young age.
Suddenly, Calvin cleared his throat. "Sophie?"
"Yes?"
"I'm just wondering, and this is not meant to be offensive or anything, but why don't you drive yourself there?" His voice was quiet, as if he was scared of hurting me. His eyes never left the road either.
I looked away, my face paling. "I haven't gotten my license yet, that's all."
"But we're nineteen."
"And? It's not a law to get it as soon as you turn sixteen." I was getting defensive now. I hope I didn't hurt him with my words.
Calvin sighed. "Sorry, I just bought I'd ask."
I chastised myself internally. "No, I shouldn't have snapped like that."
He chuckled. "It's quite alright. You can snap at me all you want."
"If you say so."
The car descended into silence. I felt his gaze on me throughout the ride. I only looked over once, and his face immediately flushed red.
Was he nervous?
I didn't have a chance to think too hard about it as we pulled into a driveway soon after. Calvin stopped the car and got out. I followed suit.
"Alright, this is his house." Calvin said, looking up at it.
It was a normal house. The kind you'd find in a suburban neighborhood. It was a two-story, with clean tan paint and light accents flushed against dark rooftops. The windows were all clean and had curtains over most of them. The plants in the yard were all green, and the hedges all cut into geometric shapes. The flowers that adorned the yard were all primary colors, and were small. I looked up towards the front door, seeing a porch and a simple metal table with matching chairs sitting on it.
Calvin nodded to himself before walking up to the door. I followed, smoothing my scarf down. It was still quite chilly out, strange for this time of year. Calvin stopped in front of the door and rung the doorbell.
As we waited, I began to run through possible scenarios in my head. Best case would be he opened the door and was completely fine. Maybe his phone was dead or he had been napping. The next best case would be he isn't home, and is actually out right now or something. Bad case he's upset. Worse case? He followed after Sara. I shuddered. I pray that it's not the last one. That would be horrible.
The door opened, and a young girl stood there. She looked up at us, her eyes wide and full of curiosity. I was shocked, mostly because this girl looked nothing like Leo. Her dark hair was frizzy and crazy, and her darker skin certainly was not at all like Leo's. Her dark eyes examined us, and her thick lashes curled upward. "Are you friends of Leo's?" She asked, folding her hands in front of her.
"Yes, I'm Calvin and this is Sophie. Is Leo here?" Calvin asked, bending over so he and the girl were the same height.
The girl nodded. "He's in his room."
Calvin smiled. "Are you his sister?"
The girl shook her head. "I'm his aunt."
I was certainly not expecting that. "You two are related?" I asked, looking at her.
"Not by blood." She said, smiling. "But we are related."
"What's your name?"
"Cecilia." She said, grinning.
Calvin chuckled. "Well, it's nice to meet you, Cecilia."
Cecilia nodded. "Would you like to see Leo?"
"May we?" Calvin asked.
The young girl nodded, stepping away to let us inside. I nodded in thanks to her as I walked in.
Their home was pretty fancy. Leo never struck me as the rich type of kid, but he definitely was at least between middle and upper class. The flooring was a white and black marble, with clean gray walls and crown molding. Fancy furniture decorated the entry room, and three different arches led to three different areas. In the middle of the whole room was a spiral staircase. I blinked, taking the whole place in. My eyes landed on Calvin, who looked around with a blank expression on his face. Cecilia turned to us. "Leo is upstairs, his room is the third on the right."
"Thank you, Cecilia." Calvin said.
"Uh, Cecilia?" I whispered, wrapping my arms around my body.
"Yes?" She asked, looking up at me.
"Is it at all possible if you could go with us? Just so Leo could be a bit more comfortable, at least until we get in? He might be more willing to let us in if he knows you let us in." I said, smiling nervously.
Cecilia nodded. "That seems like a good idea. Come along."
We followed Cecilia up the stairs and towards Leo's room. Calvin walked next to me, his face ridged as he stared straight ahead. A shove ran down my spine. Was he okay?
Before I could ask him, Cecilia stopped in front of a door. She smiled at us before she knocked on the door. A few moments passed before a muffled groaning was heard. "What do you want?" Cane a very annoyed voice. I felt my heart relax as it came to terms with the fact that he was okay. There was no need to worry.
"There's some people here to see you, Leo." Cecilia said. "Their names are Sophie an Calvin."
Silence. I nervously shuffled. What would he say? Would he be upset? Would he not open the door? Would he-
The door opened, and Leo stood there, shirtless and in his boxers. His hair was clearly unbrushed, and he had some dry drool leading out of the corner of his mouth. "What do you need?" He asked, his voice hoarse.
My face was probably bright red. All I could feel was the heat radiating off of it, so that was a clear sign that my face resembled the complexion of a tomato.
Calvin glanced at me before looking up at Leo. "We came to see if you were alright, especially after yesterday."
"Yesterday?" Cecilia asked, glancing between the two.
Leo blinked. "Yeah, all good. You guys want to come in?"
"I-"
Before Calvin could finish talking, Leo grabbed him and pulled him inside. I glanced once at Cecilia before hurrying inside with them.
