Chapter 19

We are each our own devil and make this world our hell.

"What do you mean he walks free?" I snap again. "It doesn't even matter cause ya both testifying."

"No, we're not."

"You're joking! Veronica, tell me she's joking!"

"She's not... We don't want to testify."

I angrily stood up from my chair as I stared at the two unbelievable individuals sitting across from me."

"How can you not testify against him? He put both of you in the hospital! He fractured your skull and injured your arm Veronica!"

They were both staring at the counter now and my blood was starting to boil.

"He fucking stabbed you ten times Carol and caused you to undergo surgery! You were in a freaking coma Carr! How the hell are you two not testifying?!"

When they still ignored me I rolled my eyes and stormed towards my room but not before getting my final statements out.

"He ruined your lives and yet you two are willing to let a crazy lunatic back on the streets! Congratulations, I hope you're proud of yourselves."

I slammed my door shut and felt the vibrations as its impact ran through the house. With renewed anger I threw myself onto the bed and ground my teeth as I bit in my insults. I was going on vengeful and I couldn't afford to break into prison and kill a bitch for fear of running into my father.

My mind settled on a childhood memory and I screamed in anger at the thought of women being afraid of men and giving men all the power to hurt them.

I hate men!

I screamed loudly before my body deflated and I just felt tired. What I wouldn't give to be drunk right now. I let out a long, slow sigh before grabbing my phone and dialing my first number.

Two hours later there were loud banging coming from the front door and I quickly ran out and threw it open. On the other side stood Brian, Darcy, and two other girls; all friends of the air heads in the next room and I ushered them in before locking the door.

"Where are they?" Brian demanded and I pointed towards the room.

They had locked themselves inside but I had reinforcements. Brian stormed over to the door and banged hard until Veronica opened in.

"Outside. Both of you. Now!" He commanded and I tried hard to hide my surprise as they obeyed.

We all sit on the sofas in the living room and the two girls ignore us as they huddled together.

"What the hell are you thinking?" Brian began. "Tony's my boy, but understand this... He needs to pay for what he did. You are not going to let him go free without a fair trial and his much needed punishment."

"Brian you don't understand." Carrie interjected.

"Then make me."

"What fair trial will we get? We're two lesbians that got beaten up by a straight guy. Who on the council will side with us? They'll just be glad to know that he did his part in ridding the streets of our disease."

"How dare you talk like that?! This is not Markstown. We don't have bias people here and for you to say that his heinous crimes against two innocent human beings are justified is atrocious." Michelle countered and I couldn't agree more.

"You guys don't understand. It's hard for us to face him after what he did to us. It's too painful."

"Veronica-"

"No Brian, he didn't just hurt her... He damaged us... Ruined our lives. It's hard for me to sleep these last few days. All I can think about is him."

"Then that's exactly why you need to testify." Darcy cut in.

"I promise you we'll all be by your side." I stated.

"Promise?"

"Yes!" Everyone all but screamed and I laughed as finally I saw Carrie smile.

Darcy looked over at me and I got up to distract myself. I hadn't seen her since the kiss and it was hella weird to just be around her right now, even if the focus was on my cousin and her girlfriend. Heading straight to the fridge, I grabbed a bottle of water and downed it before throwing away the empty bottle.

"Hey."

I turned slowly as I recognized Darcy's voice. "Hi."

"So Carr and Roni have agreed to testify."

"Finally."

"Yeah."

She walks to the fridge and grabs a can of soda and I try my best not to show how awkward it is to stand so close to her. I moved and braced the counter and she braced the sink. We weren't that close but we weren't far from each other either.

"Are the others still here?"

"Nope, they dropped everything to come here but they have stuff to do so... It's just us four."

"Oh."

I avoided eye contact and worried my bottom lip as I tried to think up a new conversation. The air was starting to get really hot and uncomfortable again.

"I should get to work." Darcy states and my eyes snap up to hers. She pushes her glasses up on her nose and thrashes her empty can.

"I'm sorry about the kiss." I blurt out as I stare after her retreating back.

She stops but doesn't turn to face me. "Why?... I'm not."

My saliva got caught in my throat at her answer but I really shouldn't have been surprised, after all, she is a lesbian.

"That doesn't mean that I'm all of a sudden into you... Cause I'm not."

"You're not what?" She asks, back still turned.

"I'm not into you."

This time she turns to face me and I held my breath as she comes to stand directly in front of me. Her voice is soft and I have to focus to hear her words over my beating heart. I stare at her eyes, partially hidden by the glasses as I try to regulate my heartbeat but she's as calm as ever.

"I never said you liked me... Or girls. I would never try to force my sexuality on someone else. I do what I do, I do who I do and I like what I do. Okay?"

I nodded as her eyes were glued to mine and I was afraid to breathe.

"I have to get to work."

She stares at me a bit longer before her hooded eyes slowly travel down my face. And I inhale sharply as her gaze settles on my lips. She closes the tiny gap between us and I knew she could feel my racing heart. I stand frozen but she just smirks and walks off leaving me completely shaken and utterly confused.

When my cerebellum started working again I headed to the living room to lock the door and noticed a cell sticking out from between the couch. Picking it up, I touched the screen and saw a picture of Darcy and realized it must have fallen from her purse.

I ran to stop her from pulling off from the driveway but I was too late. Groaning loudly, I headed back inside for my car keys.
