Chapter Sixty Eight:

My breath was laboured as I panted. My head still throbbing but was only a numbing pain as my fear rose and my heart accelerated.

The sound of mine and Lucas's feet thrumming the ground seemed so loud that I cringed at the amount of noise it was making. But nothing, nothing was louder than the sound of the thrumming footsteps near behind, shaking and causing the ground to vibrate.

I had no idea what it was, and I did not plan to find out anytime soon.

It was still late at night and it was near impossible to see anything, so blindly, we ran. Ran in the opposite direction of whatever was causing death and destruction.

Faintly, blood curling screams were heard through the night and the deathly silence that followed soon after, every single time, seemed to be louder than the screams themselves.

"How far do you think it is?" I ask painfully, sacrificing what little air I had left.

"I," Lucas breathed quickly, heavily, "Don't know."

I ran blindly forwards almost tripping on roots and branches that blocked my pathway when suddenly I was knocked to the ground for the second time tonight. Only this time, the body on top of me was living.

I let out a quick shrilling squeak, as I came face to face with the man on me.

Originally thought that his hair might have been orange, but the few streaks of a lighter colour within it revealed to me that his hair was streaked and soaked in blood. I could see dirt streaking his cheeks and forehead, spreading as sweat ran through it. His nose was bent at an odd angle and after closer inspection I realised that a lot of what I thought was dirt was actually freckles blending into his lighter face.

His eyes had glistened with shock, and that was when I suddenly remembered where I was.

The pain in my head came rushing in and my heart pounded hardly again. But was not because of the looming beast behind me, but from the man laying across me which I had realised welded a long sword behind his back, held in its holster.

I attempted to scramble back, and he did the same thing, no doubt eyeing my own machete hung across my waist. I had seen enough of what people were doing to each other and I did not want to be apart of that.

He quickly rose to his feet as I felt someone- Lucas- grip me from behind and haul me up quickly. "You alright?"

I nodded and just like that I watched the man in front of me, nod softly as if wishing me luck, and continue running.

I did not stay in place long enough to wonder about what would happen and instead, me and Lucas continued running, following after the man and his partner whom I had not noticed before.

Where the interaction was not that long, it had lasted a life time and I could hear the creature directly behind us. I quickly glanced over my shoulder as Lucas yelled at me to keep looking forward and running and felt my blood run cold at the sight of the beast before me.

It was as dark as night, glistening yet not as the few moonbeams bounced off him. It almost resembled a woof of some sort, only was much bigger, able to reach the lowest of branches of the tall trees around us, being at least five metres off the ground.

His body differed from a wolves though. Where he had similar features of one, his legs were more human like being longer and much stronger than a wolves, but still did not resemble a humans limbs.

But what stood out the most was his eyes. They seemed to glow white, so white that you could almost mistake it for an innocent creature. But it ended there when it snarled and growled, its teeth so sharp and long, blood still spilling from its recent kill.

It was not a creature that killed for food, but was once that killed for sport, for fun.

I saw as it approached so quickly, running on all fours it could no doubt outrun us or anyone easy. But what made me more horrified was when it slowed down and chased us at a leisure pace of its, and I realised that it was toying with us.

Suddenly, Lucas grabbed my shoulder and yanked me forcing me to look forwards as we quickly approached the pair in front of us.

"Don't look back."

I shook me head and barely panted out, "It's playing with us."

I saw him glance at me briefly before his eyes widened and he pushed me. I barely managed to keep my feet as we separated and a tree flew by . . . a tree I almost ran straight into. As the tree fully passed we again moved to run beside each other.

"Think about it," I struggled to say, "we have no chance against something like this . . . how are we not dead already?"

I watched him consider this and he nodded. I let out a sigh of relief that I was not wrong, but that was short lived as I heard the beast snarl behind me and realised that me realising that means nothing.

I felt myself begin to grow tired and new that I was not going to last for much longer, "What do we do? We can't keep this up for much longer."

He ignored me and we continued running. But only a moment later I watched his hand go to his holster that held one of his knives and he pulled one out. His other hand briefly glided over the sharp blade and I saw him whisper something before he spun around.

I watched as his dark hair gleamed in the night, his electric blue eyes a lit with mischief as he pulled back his strong muscular right arm and suddenly through the knife directly at the beast.

"What are you doing?!" I explained now terrified.

He turned back around quickly not watching if the knife swung true and pushed me towards the right, diagonally making me change directions in my running from straight ahead. And then suddenly I heard the beast roar behind us as the knife must have grazed the beast.

"Are you an idiot?! You just made it angry."

I watched as a smirk briefly rose on his face, only being able to tell from the side as the right side of his lip rose for a second and he whispered back to me. "That's the idea."

I watched as trees flew by me and suddenly, Lucas crashed into me from behind and we went sprawling behind one of the large trees.

I cursed as I felt my arm graze the ground yet again, in the same spot that had been injured before. It burned as I heaved heavily, suddenly gathering air as we stopped running. I turned towards Lucas ready to yell at him for his stupidity as I heard the beast approach us.

But before I could curse Lucas for killing us he clasped a hand around my mouth tightly and slowly, quietly, pulled us into a large bush next to the tree, and whispered in my ear softly, "As much as I'd love to hear you beautiful voice yell at me, right now is not the time."

Suddenly, the words I was meant to say flew from my mind and I settled in the bush as I felt the woofly beast's large footsteps pound the forest floor.

My heart pounded and I was terrified that it could hear it. Before I could do or fathom anything, I felt Lucas's hand leave my mouth and instead curl around my waist, drawing me ever so silently into his body.

I felt him breath heavily behind me as he tried to calm himself down. His chest vibrating against my back with every breath. I felt myself tense, but slowly leaned back into him resting my head on his shoulder as we both attempted to calm ourselves.

I watched as the pair we were with before pass us, but only they did not get far. Through the thin leaves of the bush and the many little branches that I had felt tear into my and leave little prickly cuts, I saw as they screamed, the wolf beast caught up with them.

This time, I did not hold back because of its anger and wasted no time ripping into them. I felt a scream raise into my throat, but instead, closed my eyes tightly as their screams echoed through the night.

Because they were so close, I could hear the sound of blood quenching against the beast and heard the snap of bones as it bit into the screaming boy. The other boy whom had landed on top of me before attempted to stab the beast with his sword, but was no match against it as the beast suddenly swung out its leg connecting with his chest, launching him into the nearest tree.

The sound of his back breaking was heard and I cringed as Lucas's arm around my waist tightened and the boy fell limp towards the floor. And we sat there, for who knows how long as the beast finished eating its meal, not bothering with killing and moving on, it must have been that aggravated.

I could not help the twinge of guilt gnarling within me, and heard Lucas behind me whispering over and over again.

"Sorry."

We stayed there for most of the night. Listening and hearing the screams. When the beast had finished with the bodies we held our breaths terrified if it could smell us through our scent of sweat and blood. It did begin to approach us, however, its long perky ears cocked as it heard something in the distance, and letting out another toe curling howl it ran in the direction of the sound.

As dawn slowly approached, we came from out of the bush, shaking and trying to swipe on the bugs and critters that had sprawled onto us throughout the night.

We stayed silent as we could still hear the sound of the creature prowling through the woods, but made quick movement as we attempted to leave and not have to experience another night like the night we had.
