Chapter Forty Seven:
Pain.
That was all I felt.
My chest was on fire and I was in and out of consciousness. The light before my eyes became dark and my head was spinning uncontrollably. I wasn't sure if it was dark because of the dark beast in front of me, or I had hurt myself that bad.
My back, along with my chest, was also on fire with where I had connected with the wall. It burnt in pain and felt like I had broken it. I didn't feel or hear any cracks or pops so I thought that maybe I was okay.
But that wouldn't be for too long.
I could smell my own blood dripping down my body and could hardly breathe with the pain in my chest.
I think I'm dying.
I more felt then watched the beast walk up to me. The rocks crumbled and rumbled under it's huge weight and it's claws lazily glided on the ground as he got off all fours and stood up straight on his two hind feet, easily reaching at least three times higher than my own height.
His skull seemed more cracked then from a distance. At least, that's what I thought as my vision blurred in and out of focused. The beast then began to kneel down towards me and I felt it's hot breath fanning my face.
He smelled putrid.
I almost vomited from the stench alone and felt as he opened his mouth. I dared opening my eyes slightly to be faced with the rows of razor sharp teeth and the green froth slowly spilling out of his putrid mouth and falling just in front of my feet.
I was going to die.
I couldn't help but shut my eyes as I admitted my defeat and his arm raised upwards, the claws gleaming in he surrounding red light when all of a sudden the beast turned its head in confusion.
Although I felt completely dizzy and lightheaded, I knew that this was my only chance. I slowly pushed myself off of the boulder which I had miraculously not died from, and walked sideways wobbling. I could barely see but I knew I needed to get away from the boulder before the beast pays attention to me again.
As I went to dive away, my knees gave out from the lightheadedness and dizziness I was feeling. I landed harshly on my hands and knees and wasted no time crawling around the boulder until I was hidden behind.
If the beast payed attention back to me he would find me easily. Whether looking above the boulder like he was doing before, following the blood trail from my chest and the blood seeping out of me head, or even the smell alone of my blood was overpowering.
I leant my back as far as I could against the rock and help my breath even though it burned to do so. I felt myself shake in fear as I waited to hear the beasts reaction. I seemed to have waited a long time before he finally moved.
I let out the biggest gasp of relief when I heard his claws trailing in the opposite direction before hearing his feet stomping as he ran for something else.
I shut my eyes in relief. I was okay. Although, I didn't know how much longer I had. I was bleeding severely across my chest and it burned from where the claws made contact with it. It made me thing if there was poison on his claws which was making me feel this way. My back was also in tremendous pain with where I struck the boulder, along with my head which had a migraine and I was feeling dizzy and light headed.
Who knew how much longer I had left.
But as my thoughts cleared slightly, I was scared to death when I felt something grab my arm. I jumped and turned my head expecting to see the beast back, even though I didn't hear him, but was relieved to find that it was Lucas who had grabbed my arm.
"Bryce? Bryce!" He said urgently while grabbing my face.
I opened my eyes to see him and nodded as he looked distraught. I saw him sigh in relief and felt as he grabbed both my arms and hauled me up.
"Oh my God," he whispered to himself and slowly pulled my arm over his shoulder as I was too dizzy and in pain to do anything else. "Fucking hell," he muttered.
I could only loll my head against him and looked straight to see where the beast was. It had somehow diverted its attention away from me and ran its way to one of the teams beginning to cross the bridge. The beast was obviously too big and heavy to cross the bridge itself, but unlucky for the pair there they weren't far enough to be safe.
I watched what was happening as Lucas started moving forward, all the while supporting me and trying to get us to move closer to the bridge ourselves. He approached from the back left of the beasts side as it was distracted by its right side with the team.
The beast was quick to grab the pair which was the two boys and throw them backwards away from the bridge and the ravine. I still wasn't sure about what was at the bottom, but didn't have time to dwell on it as I watched the two boys be attacked by the beast.
The two boys, the scrawny one and the buff one, were flung back but not as far as I was. They were only flung a few metres and landed much more softly on the open ground. They were quick to get up and stand on their feet as the horrid beast approached them on all fours.
The beast slowly approached the boys like a predator to its prey. It took its time, almost like it was teasing them, playing a game with them. Like cat and mouse. The boys recoiled in fear and took a few steps backwards as the beast approached them.
It almost looked like steam was coming out of the beast and its arm and leg joints popped as the beast crawled forwards. On all fours it was still taller than them by at least a metre and the width of it was almost five men laying vertical against each other.
I could tell instantly through my blurry black vision that the boys were terrified. It seemed that they knew that they were either going to make it through the bridge or die trying. And that's what they did.
The buff one suddenly let out a war cry and I watched as he ran forwards towards the beast. He attempted circling around him to get to the bridge but the beast didn't seem to take any of that. Instead, the beast lashed out with his claws. I watched as the beasts claws reached out towards the buff boy in a lashing motion.
I watched as the claws pierced the boy's skin and traveled through his chest until the claw came out the other side of his chest. I felt my breathing stop and felt as Lucas stopped moving us forward. We were now much closer to the beast and what was happening, the bridge only a short fifteen to twenty metres away.
The beast began standing on two legs and raised upwards, the poor boy still alive whilst stuck to the claws penetrating through him and was screaming. The boy screamed in pain and fear, but mostly pain as he was brought close to the beasts snarling face.
The beast seemed to almost have a malicious grin on its skull and quickly swung his arm back where the boy was release from its claws and fell down the gap of the ravine. I continued to hear him scream and faintly heard the sound of something being pierced.
I couldn't watch and felt sick as I lolled my head to the other side so it was resting on Lucas and not exactly watching what was happening. The buff boy's partner, the scrawny boy, began screaming in anguish at the loss of his partner, his friend.
The beast slowly turned towards him, it's greenish, yellow eyes swimming in black and red stared at the anguished boy as he knelt over in pain, spewing his guts on the ground. As he was doing that, the beast took no time hunching over on all fours and leapt towards the weeping boy who still continued to vomit in disgust at what he had just witnessed.
The beast then bit into the boy's side causing to let out a howling scream of pain as the beast began to eat the boy alive. I was in shock as I watched him eat out of the boy's stomach and his screaming slowly died down as he finally died, having to experience no more pain.
My vision turned even more blurry as tears welled in my eyes and Lucas gripped me ever so tightly. The beast ripped into the boy's deceased bodies and I felt sad that I didn't even know what his name was. Either of them.
I turned to Lucas and felt myself begin to grow weaker. He seemed to realise as he leant his head next to mine and whispered in my ear to ensure the starving beast didn't hear us.
"I know Bryce, I know. Just hold on."
I nodded and he continued, "we need to go before we are next. We are almost there Bryce, don't give up on me now."
I nodded in response and he continued to move forwards as fast as he could, considering he was supporting me and trying to avoid the vicious beast. It seemed like we weren't the only desperate ones anymore. After witness what the beast had done its almost like the truth and deadliness of this test really set in.
The other team consisting of the girl with long black hair and the boy with the short blonde buzz cut were desperate to leave too.
We were neck and neck with them, only we were disadvantaged and they hadn't been touched by the beast. They were quick to pass us and flat out sprinted for the bridge. The beast was obviously too distracted to notice and in that moment I had never felt true defeat. They were going to make it across that bridge and Lucas and I will be left for dead.
"Lucas, come on," I urged and hissed in pain when I tried walking forwards on my own attempting to speed us up. But instead of speeding up Lucas flat out stopped and gently placed me down on the ground. "Lucas, don't give up, we can do it!"
But we couldn't. I knew that.
But I was going to die trying anyways.
I watched distraughtly as Lucas rummaged through his bag. He seemed frantic but all I felt was distraught and despair. This was the end. I never knew I would make it this far in the Resdue to be honest. Although I never thought I would be in the Resdue either.
I would never see my family again and that was what made me feel the most pain. As I thought about everything I would miss out on, Lucas pulled out a lighter and some long red stick.
I guess the only good thing out of the Resdue was that I met Lucas. Even though to get here I had to witness the death of Carter, I was glad to have met Lucas. Thinking of Carter, I realised that I was never going to be able to say goodbye to his family for him either.
I felt a tear run down my cheek but ignored it. I didn't focus on the pain in my heart and merely focused on my physical pain. The burning of me chest, my fully scraped legs, the headache and dizziness, and the pain in my back. If we did somehow make it out would I even be alive then?
I felt my eyes begin to close and heard Lucas faintly mumbling.
"No," he said and I faintly saw him shaking his head. "Five minutes Bryce, keep your fucking eyes open." So I did, I forced my eyes to stay open, but God did they feel so heavy. It took every ounce of energy to keep my eyes open.
I watched him in my tired state and saw as he lighted the lighter and brought it to the red stick which I realised was one of those sparklers. It wasn't the ones you would light up at a party and run around screaming, it was the ones you lit up in the woods if you were lost to alert others where you were. Suffice to say, it was bright. Really bright.
As soon as Lucas lit it I watched him stand up and take the backpack off of his back. "Bryce, stay here and don't move." And he walked forwards towards the beast, the cracker flaring in his hand. All I saw was the red light and his retreating figure as he walked towards the beast.
I saw something at the corner of my eye and saw the other team approaching nearer to the bridge and they looked like they would be across to the other side in less than a minute. Suddenly, they stopped and I was distracted by someone screaming.
Oh. My. God.
It was Lucas.
He approached the beast and I saw the other team shake their heads and continue their way to the bridge. "Hey!" Shouted Lucas as he stopped a bit of a distance from the beast. It's head shot up from eating the poor boy and he stared at Lucas licking his tongue at the sight of him.
"HEY!" He screamed louder.
His voice was rugged and held the exhaustion he was feeling. From the back view, I saw that he was all sweaty and his clothes clung to him. It was easy to identify all the muscles he held in his back. It was a bit hard to see him over the bright red light which began to cloud around him and the air turned grey from all of the smoke.
The beast began to stand up on both of its hind legs and stood much taller than Lucas who seemed tiny compared to him.
"COME ON!" He screamed at him and turned around beginning to run away from the beast. The beast was a predator and loved a good cat and mouse chase, this was conveyed as the beast ran after Lucas starting on two legs before dropping to all fours.
I watched as Lucas ran past me and he barely glanced at me before running for the bridge. The other pair was just about to begin crossing it and I could see the look of terror on their faces at the beast and Lucas approaching them.
I could almost hear Lucas panting from here and the pounding of the beast moving was even louder. Its claws gripped the ground making loud scratching noises that nerved me to the bone and it quickly gained on Lucas.
It gained so fast that it was only metres beside him when Lucas slowed slightly and chucked the cracker towards the bridge where the other team was. He then rashly jumped far to the side, diving away from the charging beast.
I watched as he hit the ground hard and I felt my heart stop. I was afraid that the beast would stop running and attack him as he basically displayed himself out for it, but it's attention diverted from Lucas to the glowing cracker which laid in front of the shocked team that stared at it unmoving.
The beast never slowed down as it charge towards them and I saw them run away from the bridge, picking up the cracker to throw it away from them.
As this was happening, Lucas had gotten up and was running straight towards me. I was still sat where he left me but I was drooping. Fast. He reached me and slung his backpack over his back before standing me up.
"Come on, come on," he all but shouted in a hurry and began moving us quickly towards the bridge.
Only we weren't fast enough.
I heard screams to my right as the beast chased the other team and felt as Lucas moved my arm from around his shoulders nearly causing me to topple over, before he bent down and swung me up bridal style. As he did this I instantly felt a lot of pain in my chest, back, and dizzy from the sudden movement and let out a loud groan of pain.
"Sorry, sorry," he whispered and began running as fast as he could to the bridge.
Fifteen metres away.
Ten metres.
Five.
Two.
We were at the bridge.
I turned when I heard screaming behind me and found the beast chasing the other team not even twenty metres away and gulped in fear as I suddenly felt nerves creeping thing. One of the first emotions I felt after being hurt.
Lucas was quick to swing me around and place me on the floor. He gave me a slight shove as if to go first. "I can't carry you, it's too dangerous. Just walk ahead, I'm right behind you, you won't fall."
Whilst saying this he placed his hands on my waist and began moving me forwards. I stepped hesitantly as I could barely hold my own weight and the bridge began to swing at the sudden weight. It sighed and squeaked at the weight and I felt nervous. My hands instantly darted out and grabbed the railings in fear.
I looked over the edge and to say that it was a ravine was an understatement. It went deep down and was a high drop to fall over. It terrified me. But it wasn't the supposed water at the bottom leading to a large river. In fact, that wasn't there. Instead, there were spikes, large ones that were sticking upwards. But that wasn't the worst of it. No. In fact, there were bodies littered at the body. Bodies from the previous people.
Some were pierced straight through the spikes in the ground, whilst others just laid, but like all of them, they were all dead with blood spewing everywhere and a rotten stench rising from below.
I felt disgusted and wanted to vomit, but couldn't as Lucas kept on guiding me forwards.
"Don't look down," he said although I knew he was looking. "Go on."
It was extremely difficult. My back was in agony and my chest was on fire from the claw marks, the bleeding had not stopped and blood still oozed out of my chest. I was covered in blood and felt sticky.
I could hardly stand up as it was and the only reason why I was standing was because of Lucas. Not only was he just holding my waist, he was holding all of my weight so the only thing I had to do was step forwards.
I kept walking, trying as fast as I could but didn't make it too far until I slipped from his hands and began swaying. I would've fallen over the edge if not for Lucas's arms wrapping tightly around my waist. We continued to sway a bit before the bridge stopped moving and we stood still.
We were almost halfway across.
Maybe we could just make it!
But I seemed to speak too soon when I heard the screams in the distance become quiet. For a second I thought that maybe the beast had killed them. But as I was thinking that, something landed just in front of me and I found the red fire cracker bursting and crackling on the swaying bridge.
I stared at it in shock before turning to face Lucas in shock. He seemed to replicate the same face before turning around to see what was happening. As he turned I peered over his shoulder fighting through my burning pain as I saw the beast standing on its hind legs.
It was staring at us with its evil eyes.
Oh no.
