Chapter Eighty Two:

I had no idea how much fuel there was in the bikes, but they seemed okay to last the next few hours.

It was quite peaceful riding on the bikes if I was being honest.

The sun was setting in the distance and was now barely see able over the horizon. Its orange rays managed to alighted the path before us making it easier for Lucas and Jaylen to navigate the nondistinctive path.

With my head nestled into Lucas's back, I used the time selfishly as I closed my eyes and allowed myself to rest. With my eyes closed and against Lucas's back, I could barely feel the harsh winds as we passed through at a fast speed.

Lucas acted as a windbreaker from in front of me, blocking most of the wind, besides where my legs curled up behind his on the sides of the bike, clutching it tightly. My arms mimicked, being held tightly around Lucas's waist in fear that if I loosened them, then I would fall off.

I felt a sense of peace as I could feel the steady rise and fall of his chest as he breathed slowly. It caused me to feel almost sleepy as it mimicked a soft lullaby, that began to slowly lull me to sleep.

But I could not allow that, so instead, I leaned off his back trying to prevent myself from sleeping and peered up at his slightly hunched over body. The sun hit him perfectly and it brought out his best features as I made out his sharp jaw line and his dark hair glowed. It took everything in me to resist myself from raising one hand and softly touching his fluffy hair.

Turning to my right, I saw Jaylen riding along beside us. The sun too did him justice and I would be lying if I said his new hair had not grown on me. In fact, I felt like it add something a little different, his short, thick black stubbled beard and his clean shaven head suited him more than I thought it would.

Although, I did still miss his longer hair and wished to see that whipping behind him as he rode like right now. He glanced towards me for a second, sensing my gaze and winked at me before shooting in front of us.

I had a feeling that Jaylen had cut his hair because it resembled his sister too much.

Smiling back at him, I leaned back onto Lucas's backside and watched the grassland blur before me into one big mash of green.

After a while, I think I may have dozed off, because I jolted awake as the bike suddenly came to an abrupt stop.

Jumping up, I leaned back off of Lucas's back and gripped him tighter as a flood of fear pooled through me.

"What's wrong?" I whispered softly as I tried to peer around him.

After a moment of silence, I briefly heard him whisper something.

"Wow."

Glancing to my right where Jaylen had stopped beside us, I saw him staring at the distance in awe. Curious, I swung my leg off the bike and stood before walking on the path between them. Based on the fact that no one tried to stop me, I figured that it was safe and walked to the middle where the was a clear view.

"Holy, damn," replied Jaylen.

I stood in shock at the sight before us in the distance and rubbed my eyes to confirm that what I was seeing was real.

"What happened?" I asked rhetorically.

In the distance, stood a bunch of large buildings. No doubt a city, or what use to be a city. It was clearly abandoned as it was just a pile of ruins. The tall sky scrapers that I could see were half crumbled as it looked like some force had left a diagonal cross causing half the building to miss its infrastructure.

Other buildings that could be seen from here seemed to have similar conditions to it, having windows smashed in, missing building parts, and the look of rot and growing plants looming over them.

Above the city, sat a cluster of clouds that seemed to permanently reside there and not move. It was almost like it was a world of its own there. The setting sun seemed to be in the perfect position as it sat behind the abounded city and radiated an orange glow around it creating an eerie look.

The wind around turned cold and it felt like a flame had gone off within me as I had the sudden feeling of somebody watching me. Turning around, I was met with dark land but could see nothing. Shaking my head, I turned back to the city that stretched so wide and seemed to go on forever.

"Well doesn't that look like the perfect death trap."

I laughed as I nodded agreeing with Jaylen.

"Settle for the night?" Both boys agreed.

We walked off of the path and into the grasslands for a bit so the road was in the distance and we were barely see able from where we were. The dark night would easily conceal us, although it was unsettling that there were no trees around to cover and cloak us even better in the night.

Being careful, the boys laid the bikes down so it would blend in with the now knee high grass, and we picked an area to stay. We created a clearing, big enough to fit the three of us, with room to all lie down plus some extra space.

It took longer than expected to clear a large circle so we did not suffer from extreme itchiness of the grass and hidden bugs within it and sat within our circle. Sitting up straight, the grass reached to our head heights which was perfect and hid us from the view of passers if they were to go past the road which was about fifty metres away.

Feeling more secure, I took my bag off and set it beside me as I laid back and let out a sight, creating a pillow from the soft grass that we had picked off. Leaning my head back, I stared at the bright night sky before me.

The stars shone as millions of them appeared. Soft winds passed over us, the hard wretched cold ones were blocked by the long grass and seemed to miss us as we were in our circle of silence.

I closed my eyes and listened to the hum of the bugs coming to wake within the night. The crickets and grasshoppers, the flies and bees as they went to sleep for the night, returning home.

I heard a bag zip open and a can be brought out. Sitting up, I opened my eyes to see Lucas opening a large can and watched Jaylen as he cringed at the sight of the large tuna can.

"Things I do for survival," he whined as Lucas passed him the can with a single spoon and he ate a spoonful.

I rolled my eyes as he then passed it to me, we were careful to still ration our food as I took my own spoonful of the putrid smelling fish. "Baby."

I passed it to Lucas and cringed as my throat burned from the taste. A coughing fit took over my body as did Lucas after he swallowed a mouthful. I watched him fumble with the can as he checked the back and hit his head with the can.

"Expired Tuna, just how I like it," he said sarcastically taking a quick swig of water before passing it back to Jaylen.

We continued our little cycle before the can was empty. By the end I felt like I had more of a chance of spewing up the out of date tuna then keeping it in my stomach. We all took too generous sips of water trying to clear the disgusting taste it left.

All three of us ended up lying back and stared at the stars in silent, listening to the hum of the insects. We were silent for a long time before Jaylen broke it.

"You know," he whispered from where he laid in front of me. "Rebecca loved to go out to the country. We would go camping, set our tents, fish in the stream. It was funny, one time we found a rope and I made her go on it first."

He rambled on in happiness and my heart swelled as I heard Jaylen talk about his sister. "The rope snapped and she hit the ground before she even got close to the water."

I laughed softly as I could fully imagine it.

"She was always the brave one, the adventurous one, she would face anything and yet her head still remained high." He paused for a moment and none of us dared to say anything as I heard him sniffle. As he continued, my heart broke as I heard his voice crack and he said the next bit through tears. "Even when she died, she died doing something she loved. She didn't just go unfortunately. She looked death in the eye and kept her head high. Even still."

I felt tears well in my eyes as the sky before me blurred into a mass of darkness. She truly did. My mind reeled back to what happened on the cliff side and I nodded sharply as I could see her, as clear as day, as she looked up at me with her bright green eyes.

There was no way we were both making it out alive. She knew that. If I had continued to hold onto her we both would have fallen to our deaths. And she knew that, she did the whole time. And in her final moments, she used whatever left over strength she still miraculously had and made me release her.

So I could still live.

I sniffed out loud as tears trailed out of my eyes.

"She did, Jaylen," I croaked as a sob left my body. "She held on and left this world with a smile on her face. She did what no one else would."

I heard him let out a sob as my heart swelled with pain. No one else I knew would have done what she did. No matter how good of a person we are, we all have our limits. And not many people would choose someone else's life over theirs.

And it was not just between my life and hers. It was my life, and her hanging on with the hope. She always could have held on and denied what could have happen . . . the death of both of us. But she did not hesitate in taking that chance.

She died with dignity, a heart of gold, a soul so pure.

Much to pure for this world.

"I did not know her to well," whispered Lucas into the sky as we both stopped crying for a moment to hear what he had to say. "But from meeting her just days before . . . she is one of the kindest, most beautiful people. And the only thing I regret, is never giving her a proper thank you for what both of you did for us, and just how kind she was."

The tears in my eyes trailed out faster as I heard Jaylen silently cry nearby.

"And one thing I know for sure, is that she would want us to make it out alive. To defy the odds, to not only go home. But to live on her legacy. Because as long as we are still here, we will make sure no one will forget who Rebecca Myers was, and what she did and how many she has saved."

Lucas's beautiful tears caused a loud sob to tear through Jaylen's throat as well as mine. We cried silently for a few minutes before I started choking on my tears.

I heard them whisper if I was okay but I could barely talk through my choking as I laughed brokenly.

"Well, here's to defying the odds."

I heard Jaylen laugh as well as Lucas. Although the laughs sounded more like choking and horrid noises as we all were crying.

"How is that even funny?" Asked Jaylen as Lucas snorted.

"It's not," I stated as if it was obvious, still laughing.

And just like maniacs we laughed through the night.

. . .

We drove closer to the city as the sun shone before us. It was early morning, about an hour or two past dawn. The skies was a light pink as the sun rose and it was cool.

As we were about a mile away from the city we stopped at a fork in the road.

Slowing down we now had the dangerous and very heavy decision of deciding of whether going through the city, or taking the road that went around it.

Setting the bikes up, we got off them and began debating our options.

"It's too dangerous and risky, we need to go around," Jaylen folded his arms.

I shook my head, "Look how big it is, we need to go through it. We have our bikes, we can pass through quickly."

Lucas coughed as he still sat on the bike, leaning over it he inspected something before looking back at us and shaking his head.

"I don't know if we will have enough fuel for that."

I narrowed my eyes as I looked to the sky in exasperation from our odds.

"Although, we should go through most of it, and it would definitely not last going around."

Jaylen nodded at that but continued to argue with not going through the city. "At least its safer, we will make it out alive, a hundred percent guarantee."

"But we don't know where that leads. For all we know, it's a dead end!"

Jaylen let out a big puff of air as he spread his arms wide and stepped up to me screaming, "Well last time we decided to save time, we lost my sister, I'd rather risk going around then end up dead like her!"

There was a minute of silence as I processed what he said. He was not wrong, of course he was not wrong. But simultaneously, we both turned to Lucas to see him leaning against the handle bars.

"Just. Give. Me. A. Second," he said exasperated, breathlessly.

I saw Jaylen narrow his eyes at him as Lucas thought deeply. Finally, he leaned back and looked upwards cursing as he turned to us decidedly.

"Either way, it's going to be bad. We should just get it over and done with. Through the city."

I hated the thought of going through the city, but already we have wasted too much time lingering around, resting at night, and walking around that mountain and meadow.

Turning to Jaylen, I saw him nod as his throat bobbed and I frowned at the sight.

"We have wasted so much time, only a certain amount of people make it to the end and get out. I don't want to be one of those who don't make it, or do, but get rejected."

Jaylen nodded at that as he looked down. I nodded satisfied and went to make my way back to the bike when Jaylen spoke behind me.

"I can't go through."

Whipping my head around along with Lucas, I was stunned.

"I can't," tears had sprung to his eyes as he raised his hands to his head to pull his hair, but paused when he realised he had cut it, and settled with grabbing his head roughly.

"Jaylen-" I started taking a step towards him but he shook his head and took a step back.

"Bryce, I can't, I- I don't want to die along with my sister. As much as I want to be with her, someone needs to return home." He looked at Lucas before glancing back at me, "I need to continue and keep her legacy."

I felt myself begin to cry as I nodded. I understood him. Did not blame him, but it was his choice to make. Even though it killed me.

Walking towards him slowly, I watched him freeze in wariness. Stopping in front of him, I looked him up and down as I slowly trailed my eyes over him. I lingered over him as I slowly tried to memorise everything. His pale skin, his now shaven head even though if I squinted I could still picture is jet black hair, his pointed nose and straight lips, and his bright green eyes.

And then I threw a hard punch to his shoulder.

"Ouch," he commented sarcastically before I pulled him into a hard hug.

Immediately he wrapped his arms around me tightly as I squeezed him and tears spilled from my eyes. It was hard as I tried to speak, and settled with choking my words out.

"This is not the end Jaylen."

Pulling back I wiped my eyes as I saw a single tear fall down his face.

"On the other side, we will be waiting, be there, in three days, that's all you got, so don't take your time!"

Laughing, Jaylen nodded as he stepped forwards and pulled me into another tight hug as I sobbed loudly. "I wouldn't miss it," he said out loud.

We stayed like that for a few minutes before he whispered in my ear.

"Rebecca was my blood sister, my twin, and you may not be blood but you are a sister to me," I sobbed loudly as he chuckled softly before continuing. "I know I never said this, but don't think I did not realise what you did. Still trying to save her even though there was no hope. Thank you Bryce."

I cried as I pulled back and stepped backwards and wiped away my tears as he stared at me with a soft smile and I sniffled. "You are too."

He nodded knowing exactly what I'm talking about . . . he truly is a brother to me.

Stumbling backwards, I got back on the bike behind Lucas. Jaylen walked up to Lucas and they both clapped their hands together as they too said their goodbyes.

"Better be there," said Lucas as their hands left each other.

Jaylen scoffed, "Me? If anything I'm more concerned about you guys getting there. So good luck"

I laughed sarcastically as Jaylen's eyes fell on me.

"Luck? We need none of that."

Jaylen smiled sarcastically as he walked back to his bike with the same swagger he had the very first time I met in. Straddling his bike, he looked at us and winked before turning his engine on.

"Watch over her for me would you."

I rolled my eyes at the manly figure before looking at me and sending one final wink at me.

"And dickhead, watch your bloke."

And with that, he drove forward and turned right as he made his way around.

Lucas turned his engine on and gripped the handles before he looked over his shoulder to me and smiled softly before a hard look took over his face.

"Here we go."

And he took off, heading in a different direction to Jaylen, and drove straight towards the broken city before us.
