year twelve
Luca never came back. She waited for him, but all she ever got was a postcard, telling her that there was trouble with his family and that he couldn't return.
Now, she needs him more than ever.
A part of her was glad that he wasn't around. That way, he couldn't say, "I told you so." That is if one negated the fact that he was Luca and would never say that to her.
Jules walks in, joy shining from him, but his expression immediately falls as he takes in his sister. "What's wrong?"
The girl forces a smile and hugs Jules. "Nothing. Just thinking about someone."
"Is it Luca?" he asks. She knew that her brother loved Luca as much as she did. Luca had been his idol growing up.
"Yeah."
Jules climbs into her lap. Although he knew that he's much too old for that, he also knew that his sister wouldn't mind. "I miss him too. Do you think he's coming back?"
"Maybe."
The girl sighs and holds him tighter. "Anyway, what are you doing up?"
"I heard about you and Az," he says. Jules frowns when he says Az's name. "I can beat him up for you."
The girl smiles as she tries to imagine her eight-year-old brother going against the 17-year-old. It was an amusing sight. "No, thank you. We don't beat anyone up in this household."
Jules pouts. "What if they deserve it?"
"Then you can do it without telling me. But it cannot concern me, or else you're making me part of the problem and I don't want to play any part in it," she says. The girl ruffles his hair. "But still, I don't think this situation warrants a beating."
"Oh." Jules leans his head on her shoulder. "Well, what can I do to help?"
The girl thinks for a moment. She can't possibly come up with anything that could stop the pain inside her. Still, she sees his hopeful face and she can't help but say, "Stay with me?"
"Okay!" The younger boy beams. "Do you want some ice cream?"
She nods slightly and he immediately runs off, his tiny feet pattering against the hard floor.
The girl watches him leave before she leans back against the couch. She needed to find something entertaining for Jules. "Hey, do you wanna watch a movie?" she calls out.
"Yeah."
She turns on the telly, and starts scrolling through them. A moment later, her brother returns, a large tub of ice cream in his arms with two spoons sticking out of it.
"Can we watch a Marvel movie?" he asks as he tucks himself under a blanket.
She agrees, just glad that it had nothing to do with romance. She didn't want to think about anything remotely close to that subject.
Grabbing a spoon, she shoves some ice cream into her mouth, allowing the cold to numb her mouth. She hopes that the cold also numbs her pain as well.
With Jules by her side, the two start watching, both utterly immersed in the movie. It isn't till the very end that she realizes that she could make it through this hurt as long as she had her little Jules next to her.
