Chapter 30 - Apologise
~ Adrian's POV ~
We all stood in silence shocked by the sudden appearance of our sister. None of us had really spoken about her after she chose to leave with our parents after my father basically disowned me. Of course I missed her, she was my baby sister, but that makes the betrayal she showed me just that much worse.
Jordan stepped back to stand next to me while Mia came inside closing the front door behind her. "What are you doing here?" It was Carlotta that spoke first - Mia didn't just choose our parents over me, she also left Matteo and Carlotta, and Carlotta would have taken it the hardest - they were inseparable. Her cold tone lingered in the air for a few moments before Mia finally spoke.
"I came to see you...I didn't know everyone else would be here." Mia's eyes scanned over Carlotta and Matteo before landing on me. Her eyes widened at the sight of Leo in my arms who was busy staring at the unfamiliar face in the room.
"Adrian..." I shook my head and took Jordan's hand in my free one just for the comfort I knew it would give me, otherwise I would end up losing my temper while holding Leo which is something I promised Jordan I would never do.
"Non ho niente da dirti." (I have nothing to say to you.) Her face showed sadness but she quickly covered it up and nodded before shifting her eyes over to Jordan. "Congratulations Jordan, he looks exactly like both you and Adrian."
I could tell Jordan didn't really care about what Mia had to say but she was too nice to respond in the way I would have if Mia had said that to me.
"Thanks." After half heartedly thanking Mia, Jordan took Leo from me and walked back into the living room that we were just in. Matteo followed behind her clearly having nothing to say to Mia either. Like I said, she left all three of us, not just me. The other two both took it hard. Once it was just Carlotta, Mia and I, the tension in the air increased drastically.
"You have no right to come here anymore Mia. It's almost been a year since you left us, and you show up now?" Carlotta's voice had lost the caring tone she had when she spoke to us earlier, now that Mia was here she was being her cold self that she was when Jordan first came to Milan.
I rolled my eyes when Mia's eyes, which were identical to mine and Carlotta's, filled with tears. "Don't try that bullshit with us. You freaking left us. You're not one of us anymore, you chose your side."
I know my words may have been harsh, but she deserved them. The four of us always stuck together; that was what made us so strong during all the things we had to go through as De Mancuso children, but Mia didn't do that this time. She left us. "Adrian please, I'm sorry."
"Sorry? You're not sorry. You're just lonely so you came back. What was it? Did our parents finally stop treating you like a princess for leaving us?" Mia shook her head and stepped towards us. "I'm sorry for leaving you Adrian. I didn't know what to do, I know I should have stayed with you but I just panicked, they're our parents."
"You panicked? Really?" Carlotta jumped in before I could respond. "That's one thing us De Mancuso's don't do. We don't panic." She stepped towards Mia with a cold glare before lowering her voice. "And we don't betray each other."
"Carly please...I'm sorry." I sighed and shook my head at her water works which made an appearance once again. "I'm done with this Mia, thanks to your precious father I've got enough going on in my life. I don't need you, not anymore. Carlotta has managed to do the work of two sisters for Matteo and I, we're fine without you. You can go now."
And with that I turned around and went back into the living room the get what was most important to me. Leo and Jordan. Jordan's eyes met mine and although I could tell she wanted to ask if I was okay she didn't. She stood up once again gathering all of Leo's things and we made our way back to the front door with Matteo following behind us. I pressed my lips to Carlotta's forehead before whispering to her. "Dipende da te se la perdoni. Ti amo, sii al sicuro a Parigi." (It's up to you if you forgive her. I love you, be safe in Paris.)
With that I followed Jordan and Matteo out the house and down the street to our cars. We stopped by my Audi R8 and Matteo's BMW I8. "Thank you for coming, I know you didn't want to." Matteo chuckled in an attempt to lighten the mood which had plummeted after Mia's unexpected arrival. "Did you just thank me Adrian?" I rolled my eyes and pulled him into a bro hug when he spoke again. "Don't worry bro, you're welcome." Matteo clapped me on the shoulder before giving Jordan a hug and kissing Leo's forehead causing the two month old to gurgle to himself.
"Drive safely Matteo." I glanced over at Jordan who was smiling at my brother. It's crazy to think about what those two had gone through all those months ago and now although they would hate to admit it, they care about each other. Matteo made his way over to his car while Jordan and I spent a while trying to get Leo into his car seat. Eventually he got tired of resisting and Jordan was able to sit next to him while I got into the drivers seat.
"Are you sure you're okay to drive Adrian?" I nodded and turned the engine on. "I'm fine Jordan, let's just get home before anything else happens to ruin our night."
~ Jordan's POV ~
Adrian was silent for the whole drive, clearly seeing his sister after a year affected him, even though he's trying to hide it like he always does.
I carried Leo up to the nursery and got him ready for bed since he was already half asleep by the time we got home. I put my baby boy to bed before turning on the baby monitor and leaving a night light on for him in case he woke up. I quietly closed the door to the nursery and took a deep breath before going into our bedroom where Adrian was sitting on the couch with his head in his hands.
At the sound of my entry Adrian looked up at me hiding away all the emotions he was feeling by placing a blank expression on his face.
"He must have been exhausted if you managed to get him down that quickly." I gave him a small smile and nodded as I made my way towards the closet to change into some shorts and a tank top for bed. "Yeah, Carlotta probably tired him out today, you know what she's like."
Adrian didn't respond and instead just stripped off his clothes leaving himself in his boxers, and made his way over to the bed. I took my hair out of it's messy bun and quickly brushed my teeth before joining Adrian in our bed. We lay in a comfortable silence for a while, both of us lost in our own thoughts.
"Are you okay?" I heard Adrian sigh next to me. "I'm fine." I could tell by his tone he didn't want to talk about what happened, something I was used to by now. Over the time we've been married I've learned to just let Adrian tell me how he feels about things in his own time. There's no use trying to push him, it only leads to arguments. I nodded before glancing over at him admiring his profile which was slightly visible due to the slight bit of light entering our room- his eyes were closed as he stared up at the ceiling, his adam's apple bobbing a little as he swallowed. I turned over on my side and wrapped an arm over his waist while resting my head on his chest.
"She's my sister...I can't hate her, but I want to, so freaking badly." I sighed and nodded against Adrian's chest. "I know baby, but sometimes you just have to forgive peo-" Adrian was quick to cut me off while I was speaking as soon as that word left my mouth.
"There's no way I'm forgiving her, not after what she did." I resisted the urge to roll my eyes because all though Adrian couldn't see me I had a feeling he would know, and he absolutely hates it when I roll my eyes - I don't know why but he just does.
"Talk to her, just see what she has to say. It can't hurt." Eventually Adrian gave in and mumbled an 'okay' , probably because he was too tired to argue with me, after the physically and emotionally challenging day we had both had, this just added to the exhaustion we already both felt.
"Are you okay Jordan? I don't want my family politics to affect you in any way after what happened all those months ago." I smiled at the way that although the tiredness in his voice was clearly evident, Adrian wanted to make sure I was okay even though there was no need. I placed a kiss on his chest and ran my hand over his hard, toned stomach. "I'm fine baby, don't worry about me. Go to sleep."
<<<<<<< >>>>>>> <<<<<<<
The sound of squealing woke me up from my deep sleep. I sat up to see Adrian's side of the bed empty causing a frown to make its way onto my face. I got out of our bed and made my way towards Leo's nursery to check on him but when I got there his crib was empty too. The squealing became increasingly louder causing a slight feeling of panic to build up in my chest. I rushed downstairs towards the sound and ended up finding myself in the kitchen.
My eyes landed on Leo in Adrian's arms, Adrian was trying to feed him some of my milk that I'd put in a bottle for Leo. I smiled at the frown on Adrian's face when Leo turned his face away from the baby bottle. "Let me do it." Adrian's eyes moved away from Leo and landed on me before he smiled a wide smile at me. "Don't worry about it baby, I've got it."
His eyes moved down towards Leo who started crying in his father's arms, I couldn't help the small chuckle escaped my mouth. "I'll do it." I made my way over to them and took Leo from Adrian's arms, as soon as I held him against my chest he calmed down.
"I was trying to let you sleep." I glanced over at Adrian who was leaning against the counter with a frown on his face watching me walk around with Leo to calm him. "If he was hungry you should have just woken me up babe, I don't mind."
"I wanted to bring you breakfast in bed but then this one woke up." I smiled at Adrian who seemed even more disappointed now that his plan was ruined. Sometimes he was so cute and thoughtful it's hard to remember he's a ruthless mafia leader. This was the side that made me love him, no matter what he's done in the past.
I stepped towards him and leaned up kissing his lips softly. "You're so sweet." He rolled his eyes but kissed me back anyway, our kiss was eventually interrupted by Leo who started squealing all over again.
That was our morning; trying
to find time to spend with each other while looking after a grumpy Leo. We spent most of our day cleaning up around the house - well I did, Adrian just followed me and we watched movie after movie whilst trying to keep Leo entertained for the few hours he was awake. I guess that's just the life of being a parent now - you focus your life around your child not yourself.
"Babe he's sleeping." I smiled in relief as Adrian took a seat on the couch next to me letting out a sigh of exhaustion after I asked him to put Leo down for his nap.
"For a two month old, he sure knows how to put up a fight." I chuckled at his comment and leaned over to kiss his cheek at the same time he turned towards me. My lips landed on his and he smirked against them before pulling me onto his lap. "I think I deserve a reward for all my hard work with Leo today."
"Yeah?" He nodded and leaned towards me but this time I placed my hand on his chest to stop him moving any closer. "I think I've done more than you today-" I leaned towards him, tracing my lips over his jaw as I whispered seductively. "-I think it's my turn to be rewarded."
Adrian chuckled although I could tell the way I was acting was affecting him when his breathing increased and his eyes closed. Before Adrian could respond to me the front door bell rang causing us to pull apart reluctantly. "One day I'm going to take you to our room and lock the door and nothing will stop me from doing what I want to do to you."
I couldn't hold back my laughter when Adrian gently nudged me off his lap and back onto the couch before getting up to answer the door. Once he's in that mood, if anything interrupts us he can't handle it.
A few minutes later Adrian came back into the living room followed by Matteo and Angelo. I smiled at the two of them as Adrian took his seat next to me however my smile faltered at the sight of the fourth person entering the living room. Mia gave me a small smile as she took a seat across from Adrian and I. Matteo and Angelo sat as far as they could from the girl that abandoned us all so many months ago. I sent Adrian a questioning look but he was too busy staring at his hands in front him whilst resting his elbows on his knees.
"What's going on?" I glanced over at Angelo and Matteo who both kept their heads down aswell, that meant my last resort to get some answers was to ask the elephant in the room herself. "Mia?"
"I went over to see Matteo who was already with Angelo, but he refused to speak to me unless Adrian was present. So here we are." I frowned and turned towards Matteo who this time was glaring at Mia probably because of her explanation. "Why in the world would you think it's okay to bring her here Matteo? We agreed we wouldn't tell anyone the location of our house this time."
"It's not like she's going to purposely try to hurt you or Leo." I rolled my eyes at Matteo's attempt at defending his actions but Adrian was quick to also defend his brother before I could get another word in. "It's fine Jordan; he's right. She's not really going to hurt her only nephew is she? She might be a bitch but she wouldn't do that."
"When did you become so trusting? It was only last night when you told her she wasn't needed anymore." Adrian frowned and turned towards me clearly annoyed by what I was saying. "That doesn't mean I think she would try and harm a baby. She's still my freaking sister Jordan watch your mouth."
I scoffed and shook my head before standing up well aware of everyone's eyes on me. "I don't care if she's your sister, I have no reason to trust her around my baby, just like you didn't trust my family when we first got married."
"Guys-" Matteo's voice was cut off when Adrian rose to his feet too. "Just move on from that Jordan! It's been over a year. Anyway, weren't you the one who was so adamant about us not arguing anymore? Yet here we are once again because of you." I shook my head and stepped towards Adrian feeling my frustration rise; how was it fair that Adrian could voice his own opinions about his sister but when it involves Leo I wasn't allowed. "I'm not the one being such a bastard-"
"Guys-" Once again Matteo was cut off.
"Sei quello che era così disperato per il mio nemmeno dieci minuti fa." (You're the one who was so desperate for me not even ten minutes ago.) Adrian's comment caused both Angelo and Matteo to let out a loud laugh and from the corner of my eye I saw Mia try to cover up a smile which just pissed me off even further. Adrian had a slight smirk playing on his lips as he said it but I didn't find it funny. Instead of retaliating I decided to try and do the mature thing in this situation. I heard Adrian call my name as I walked out the room but I ignored him - hey, I said I was going to try and be mature - I never said I would be successful. Anyway, in my view it's mature to ignore someone if you know they're going to cause an argument with you.
After using the rare alone time to take a quick much needed shower I decided to go and check on Leo while Adrian was busy entertaining his guests. I found him with his eyes half open in his nursery showing he had just started waking up. I smiled a toothy grin at him and tickled his tummy softly before picking him up. I walked around the nursery with him mumbling quietly to him while he woke up, I usually did this so that when I came to feed him or change his diaper he wouldn't be so groggy and irritable.
Loud sounds of a heated conversation could be heard as I made my way downstairs holding Leo in my arms, to get his bottle of my milk; as I made my way past the living room door I heard Matteo call my name. I decided against ignoring him so instead I stood in the doorway and rose an eyebrow at him questioningly, making sure not to make eye contact with anyone else in the room.
"Can I hold Leo?" Matteo gave me a hopeful smile and as much as I wanted to say no and leave the room where I could feel my husbands gaze burning into me, I didn't want to be one of those moms that used the child to get back at other people. I knew how much Matteo and everyone else in the room, apart from Mia, loved Leo and I was never going to stop them from seeing him, even if I was having problems with any of them.
I reluctantly nodded and made my way towards Matteo who was grinning with excitement; I placed Leo in his arms and instantly the two month old perked up in his uncle's arms. As I turned around to leave I caught Mia staring at me - probably watching the ecounter that just unfolded between Matteo and I, and for some reason this really bothered me.
"What are you staring at Mia?" My harsh tone brought her out of whatever thoughts she was having and her eyes met mine. "What are you even still doing in my house? Get out." I wasn't usually this rude to people but Adrian really pissed me off earlier and I genuinely had no problem taking it out on her; especially after I remembered the way she spoke to me when I first married Adrian and she accused me of 'ruining her families reunion'.
"Jordan..." I turned toward Angelo who gave me an attempted subtle shake of the head. I frowned at him and turned back towards Mia who was clearly busy trying to hold her smug grin back. "Wha-"
"Don't talk to her like that Jordan. Everything's fine now, you have no right." Adrian's voice cut me off before I could question the weirdness going on in the room. This time I turned towards him for the first time since I entered the room but he was now stood to his feet.
"Apologise." I scoffed at the way Adrian attempted to tell me what to do like I was a three year old or something. There was no way I would let him speak to me like that and he's known that since the day we met. I ignored the serious warning look he was giving me and shook my head.
"No." He sent me another glare but I stood firm, there was no way I was apologising to her. Before I could refuse, Adrian stepped towards me and took my hand surprising gently, he pulled me behind him as we left the room leaving me enough time to glance over at Leo who was busy with Matteo. "Matteo don't let her anywhere near my baby!"
I didn't get a chance to hear if there was a reply or not because Adrian had already pulled me out of the room, he dragged me down the hallway into the kitchen and closed the door behind him. I felt my anger rise when he turned towards me and I let the words flow from my mouth. "What the hell is your problem? Why would you trust her around Leo? What's happened to you? You're always so careful and now all of a sudden you're so trusting? Actually, never mind being nice to Mia, why would you try and and embarrass me like that in front of everyone earlier? There was no need to be so horrible to me-"
Adrian cut me off by placing his lips on mine, his hands went to my waist as he pulled me up against his chest. My hands went to his chest as I steadied myself against him when he pulled away, gently pecking my lips one more time before resting his forehead against mine. "I'm sorry for what I said baby." His voice came out deep and husky as he stared into my eyes with lust which was enough to give me the tingles.
"Adrian..." I think he could tell he was having that effect on me because he smirked before stepping away but not before placing a kiss on my cheek. I cleared my throat trying to calm myself down when Adrian decided to speak again. "I haven't fully forgiven Mia yet, and I definitely don't trust her yet but I just need you to trust me Jordan. I need to test her but I can't if you keep shouting at her so please be nice to her."
"Why? I have nothing to say to her, I'd rather make an effort with my own sister, the one I haven't seen in almost two years, than with yours." Adrian leaned against the counter, his eyes fixed on me as he stared at me clearly thinking carefully about his response, probably trying not to anger himself any further. He always got angry whenever I mentioned the way we met and how he treated our relationship at the start - it's a good way for me to get his attention and make a point but Adrian doesn't deal well with it whenever I bring it up. Eventually he responded keeping his tone hard as he spoke quietly. "She's my family - Leo's aunt. Please just do it."
I don't understand why there's always a different rule for Adrian's family and for mine. I could come back with the same argument; my parents are also Leo's grandparents and my siblings are his aunt and uncle, but I don't. Yet what Adrian says goes. I shook my head in annoyance and made an attempt to leave the kitchen. "Fine, whatever Adrian."
I felt Adrian's hand catch my arm before I could pass him, he pulled me back so that he could see me properly. "What's the problem Jordan? Why can't you just trust that I know what I'm doing?"
"I don't have a problem." He held my stare for a moment and rolled his eyes but let go of my arm anyway. Adrian followed behind me as we silently made our way back to the living room where everyone was sitting. I took Leo from Matteo who was busy eyeing Adrian and I, probably to see if we attempted to kill each other while we were gone.
"Mia, Jordan wants to apologise." I rose an eyebrow at Adrian who was sending me a warning glance, eventually I gritted my teeth and stuck a fake smile on my face before turning towards his sister. "I'm sorry." Mia seemed skeptic at first but eventually a smile broke out onto her face and she stood up before enveloping me into a hug being careful not to crush Leo.
"I'm so glad we can finally get on! Jordan I know we never really got off to a good start with all the commotion going on between you, Adrian and my family - but now we can be just like sisters!" I had to force myself to keep my smile put on my face while she squealed infront of me. She may be nice, sort of, but she is bloody annoying. I nodded slowly while looking around the room uncertainly at everyone staring at me.
"Great."
