Falling in his arms
As high school progressed, the lives of Christine and Lara began to diverge in ways neither had anticipated. After two years of navigating the turbulent waters of adolescence together, they found themselves on different paths-paths that, while parallel, were beginning to lead them in different directions.
Lara, ever the diligent student, had set her sights on med school. The rigor of her studies consumed her days and nights. She spent hours buried in textbooks, attending extra classes, and preparing for exams. Her drive to succeed left little room for anything else. Her once easy camaraderie with Christine was strained by the weight of her ambitions. The time they used to spend together dwindled as Lara's world became dominated by medical terminology and anatomy charts.
Christine, on the other hand, found herself blossoming in a different direction. She had always had a bright mind, but her true passion lay beyond the confines of the classroom.
She chose to major in Mathematics, a subject that came easily to her, but her heart was in the cultural clubs and events she organized. She threw herself into her role as an organizer, planning school festivals, talent shows, and charity events. Her natural charm and easygoing nature made her a magnet for friends, and soon, she was surrounded by people who admired her creativity and enthusiasm.
Lara couldn't help but notice the change. Christine was always busy with some event or another, always surrounded by new friends, always laughing. Lara felt a pang of jealousy she couldn't quite suppress. She missed the days when it had been just the two of them, when they had shared everything. Now, it seemed like Christine had a whole new world that didn't include her.
There were moments when Lara would walk past the school courtyard and see Christine in the center of a group, all eyes on her as she animatedly explained her latest idea for a school event. Lara would feel a tightness in her chest, a mix of envy and longing. She wanted to be happy for Christine, but it was hard not to feel left out.
One particular day, Lara found herself sitting alone in the library, struggling to concentrate on her studies. She had a big exam coming up, but her thoughts kept drifting back to Christine. She remembered how they used to sit together, how Christine would distract her with jokes and stories, and how they would eventually buckle down and study together, a perfect balance of work and play.
Lara sighed and shook her head, trying to push the thoughts away. She couldn't afford to be distracted now. Med school was her goal, and nothing could come in the way of that. She buried herself deeper into her studies, trying to ignore the ache in her heart.
Meanwhile, Christine's life seemed to be going perfectly. She was thriving in her clubs, her grades were solid despite her minimal effort, and she had a growing circle of friends who adored her. She felt fulfilled in a way she never had before. But even in the midst of her happiness, she never forgot her best friend. She knew Lara might be insecure, she wished to introduce Lara to her friends so that they can hang out together but knowing her introvert nature and how being around people makes her uncomfortable, she dropped the idea.
Despite her busy schedule, Christine would make sure to always be there with Lara during lunch break and they would walk back home together if Christine had no after-school activities to attend.
This was not enough for Lara though, she missed those times when she had Christine all to herself.
"It would be great if we both get married Kay, we can always stay together", suddenly Lara blurted out of nowhere while they were going home from school..
Christine stopped in her tracks and turned around facing Lara. She stared at her face and started laughing out loud.
"I never knew you can crack a joke with such a serious face Lara, you are really awesome" again she started laughing
"But on a serious note, you can marry my brother Lara, he seems to like you, maybe you two can get along. We would stay in the same house, life will be great, what do you say?" Christine asked Lara staring her with a naughty expression on her face.
"Yeah, why don't you marry me to your dog instead, he seems more sensible than that stinky creature you call brother.." said Lara staring blankly at Christine.
(Why does the thought of marrying a man seem so unsettling? I can never imagine a life together with a man by my side. Life with Christine would be soo fulfilling though.....) thought Lara
"Okay okay, don't be angry, I won't take you as my sister in law. You know what, I will take you in as my elder brother. What do you say captain? Are you interested?" said Christine..
"Do I look like a boy to you? I am a girl for God's sake."
"Ohh really?"
"look at this dress you are wearing", Christine said pointing to her clothes
"this haircut of yours", now pointing to her hairs
"and this face, cute and handsome" Christine cupped Lara's face with both her hands. Lara felt her heartbeat increase with her sudden gesture and she stared at Christine's eyes with a questioning look
"If you were a boy, I would surely ask you out" said Christine again laughing out loud proud of her own joke.
(Only if I were a boy) thought Lara. She took a deep breath and started running after Christine.
One morning, Christine's perfect routine hit a snag. She overslept, a rarity for her, and woke up in a panic. The clock on her bedside table read 8:30 AM-she was already late for school.
"Crap!" she exclaimed, throwing off her covers and scrambling out of bed. She rushed around her room, pulling on her uniform in a frantic haste. Her mom called up the stairs, "Christine, you're going to be late again! What's going on with you?"
"I know, I know!" Christine yelled back, nearly tripping over her shoes as she tried to pull them on. She grabbed her school bag and bolted downstairs, snatching a half-made sandwich from the kitchen counter.
"Breakfast!" her mom called after her, exasperated.
"This is breakfast!" Christine shot back, stuffing the sandwich into her mouth as she slung her bag over her shoulder. She spotted her dad near the door, keys in hand.
"Dad, I need a ride!" she demanded, tugging on his arm as she tried to hurry him out the door.
Her dad looked at her, bemused. "What happened to the bus?"
"No time! Come on!"
Her dad chuckled and shook his head, but he obliged, leading her out to the car. Christine fidgeted impatiently as they drove, her mind already racing through the day's agenda. She had a club meeting during lunch, a math test in the afternoon, and an event to plan for the weekend. She was juggling a lot, but she thrived on the chaos.
By the time they reached the school, Christine was practically vibrating with urgency. She barely waited for the car to stop before she was out the door, running toward the entrance. In her rush, she didn't notice the person coming out of the school building until it was too late.
She collided with a solid chest, and for a moment, the world seemed to tilt on its axis. Her books scattered to the ground, and she found herself looking up into the most beautiful eyes she had ever seen. They were a light shade of blue, like the sky on a clear summer day, and she felt herself getting lost in them, drowning in their depths.
The boy was saying something, his voice soft and concerned, but Christine couldn't process the words. Her heart was pounding so hard she thought it might burst out of her chest. She tried to say something, to apologize or to laugh it off, but her mind was blank.
"Are you okay?" he asked, his voice finally breaking through her daze.
Christine's mouth opened, but no sound came out. She could feel her face flushing, her thoughts a jumble of panic and wonder. And then, just as she managed to find her voice, everything went black. The last thing she felt was the warmth of his arms catching her as she fainted, the world slipping away.
When Christine came to, she was lying on a bed in the school infirmary. The room was quiet, the only sound the faint ticking of a clock on the wall. She blinked up at the ceiling, her mind foggy as she tried to piece together what had happened.
There was a soft rustle of movement, and she turned her head to see the school nurse sitting at a desk, reading something on a clipboard. The nurse looked up and smiled when she saw Christine was awake.
"Well, good morning," she said warmly. "You had us worried for a minute there."
Christine pushed herself up on her elbows, her head still spinning. "What happened?"
"You fainted," the nurse replied, coming over to check her pulse. "Do you remember anything?"
Christine frowned, the memory of those blue eyes coming back to her in a rush. "I... I bumped into someone."
The nurse chuckled. "Yes, and he brought you in here himself. Stayed until he was sure you were okay."
Christine's heart skipped a beat. "Who was he?"
The nurse gave her a knowing smile. "He didn't say much, just that he was glad you were alright. But from the looks of things, I'd say he was quite taken with you."
Christine's cheeks flushed pink as she lay back down, her thoughts whirling. She had no idea who the boy was, but those eyes... she couldn't get them out of her head.
As she lay there, a small smile played on her lips. For the first time in a long while, she felt a spark of excitement she couldn't quite explain. Life, it seemed, had just taken a very interesting turn.
