Chapter 1

Jade sat her desk doing some work on her laptop. It was her first day at Raines Corporations and she just settled in about a few hours ago. The CEO himself had interviewed and hired her on the spot. Jade was still shocked of everything that had just happened within the span of 3 hours.

The elevator dinged taking Jade out of her daydream. Her boss, Adrian Raines, stepped out and approached her.

"Jade. I have a meeting with a few friends. I've selected some gifts for them that are waiting to be retrieved in the Archives. Please collect them and distribute them to my guests." Adrian ordered her.

"Of course." Jade responded, heading into the elevator and going down.

She was surprised at how far she had to go until the doors opened. Jade stepped out and took in the scene. She marveled at how much history must be sitting upon the shelves.

Someone cleared their throat startling Jade.

"Who are you and what are you doing down here?"

An old man stared her down with narrowed eyes.

"Adrian sent me down here to pick up some gifts for his friends." Jade spoke.

"Ah yes, you must be his new assistant. Very well." The old man disappeared and reappeared in the blink of an eye.

"The bejeweled scarab is intended for Miss Sayeed. The dagger is for Mr. Castellanos and the ring is for Miss Everleigh. All items originate from the 1600s to the 1800s." The old man reported dutifully.

"No way. As in the real 1600s?" Jade questioned, reaching to touch the ring.

The old man immediately slapped her hand away.

"Ouch!" Jade flinched.

"No touching. These items are incredibly fragile and must be delivered to their owners with care. I'm sure you can be trusted not to touch?" The old man glared at her.

"Yeah. Don't touch. Understood." Jade muttered, taking the box from him.

"Godspeed." The old man disappeared.

Jade went back to the elevator and returned her desk. There she continued on down the hallway to where the meeting took place. She knocked on the door and was greeted by Adrian who let her in.

"Oh! Another assistant? She's much prettier than the last one." A voice commented.

Jade looked up to see three people sitting in the chairs. One was a beautiful brunette whose eyes showed no emotion. Another was a blonde woman who smiled kindly at her. The other was a man who eyed her hungrily.

"Everyone, my new assistant, Jade. Jade, meet Kamilah Sayeed," Jade looked to the brunette who bowed her head respectfully, "Fiona Everleigh," The blonde smiled kindly, "and Lester Castellanos."

"It's nice to meet all of you." Jade responded.

Fiona and Kamilah bowed their head slightly while Lester reached forward to stroke Jade's hand.

"The pleasure is all mine lovely." Lester smiled creepily.

"Um..?" Jade looked to Adrian worriedly.

Adrian's eyes narrowed as he shot forward, slamming Lester's hand into the table leaving a crack.

"Hands off." Adrian snapped.

"Alright jeez." Lester took back his hand, rubbing it for relief.

"Dear lord." Kamilah rolled her eyes getting a soft laugh from Fiona.

Jade returned to her spot slightly behind Adrian who addressed the room.

"Our meeting has now come to an end however I have chosen gifts for you all." He looked to Jade and nodded.

Jade grabbed the box and opened it. She took the scarab out and carefully handed it to Kamilah.

"Oh. You've done well Adrian." Kamilah smirked, thanking Jade before holding the scarab to the light.

Jade moved on and took out the ring handing it to Fiona.

"Oh how lovely! You have my gratitude." Fiona smiled at Jade before sliding the ring onto her finger.

Jade took out the dagger and handed it to Lester.

"Oooo an angel with a switchblade!" Lester commented excitedly.

"Oh my god." Kamilah groaned.

"Is there anything else you think about besides women?" Fiona questioned.

"Nope. Look Adrian, I minded my manners." Lester grabbed the dagger cautiously to not touch Jade.

"Wonderful. You're able to have common courtesy." Adrian responded, unamused.

Jade excused herself and returned to her desk upon Adrian's dismissal. Minutes later, the others came out. Kamilah and Fiona were speaking with one another, both gestured goodbye to Jade, and left the building. Lester came out after, winking at Jade, before making his leave. Adrian came after Lester and stopped at Jade's desk.

"What did you think of the meeting?" Adrian queried.

"I liked Fiona and Kamilah. Lester made me uncomfortable." Jade answered.

"I would apologize for Lester but that's his personality. Kamilah and Fiona are both the epitome of elegance and politeness."

"How long have you known them?"

"I've known Fiona and Kamilah for a very long time. They both have shaped me into the person I am today."

"They both seem really nice."

"Yes they can be. Fiona more than Kamilah however."

The clock chimed gaining both Adrian and Jade's attention.

"You should head out. I have no need for you for the rest of the night." Adrian said.

"Are you sure?" Jade asked.

Adrian nodded and walked away without another word.

"Oh, okay then." Jade said to herself, packing up her things and heading out.

Jade stopped to get some food for her and her roommate before heading back to her apartment. She took a shortcut which ended up being a dark alley according to her GPS. On her way through she saw a figure hunched over something.

"Hello?" Jade questioned.

The figure stopped moving and everything was silent. Jade could feel the hairs on her arm stand as she watched the figure spin around. A pale gray person thing yelled at her, its sharp teeth glinting in the light as it lunged at her.

Jade threw her arm up and felt its teeth sink into her arm causing her to scream out in pain. The figure knocked her to the ground and poised above her for the killing blow until a voice spoke out.

"Resilire."

The figure was thrown away from Jade who scrambled backwards. Her back hit someone's legs causing her to look up. Fiona stood behind her though she looked much different than before. Fiona's eyes were purple instead light brown.

The figure snarled and prepared itself for another attack.

"Exilium."

The figure glowed yellow before exploding in gray dust. Jade was shocked and flinched when Fiona kneeled down in front of her.

"Come little one. We have much to discuss."
