Weekend Getaway
It had been two weeks of torture for Moyo – how could she be living with a person and didn't talk for a whole two weeks, there was no exchange of greetings or even insult. It only looked like they stopped existing with each other. Numerous times, she tried to spark conversations between them but it was all futile.
Maybe, She should be happy that Cassie no longer bothers or bullies her, but it was more difficult to accept she no longer exists in her sister's world.
She had no idea how she had convinced their mother to allow them transport to and fro to school in different cars with different drivers. The only ray of sunlight at home was her father and the love he showered on her.
Moyo adjusted her school bag as she looked for Cassie. She was in between two girls, talking and smiling. Her smile seemed so original; it brought a sudden ache to Moyo's heart. Why couldn't she smile this way at her?
"Are you okay?" Bayo's voice brought her out of her revive in surprise. She had no idea he had sneaked upon her while she was too focused on Cassie. Moyo averted her gaze to the bus that was taking them out. She never knew the school had a bus, she had always seen the students being taken home by their drivers or driving themselves.
"I'm fine." Her voice cracked on the word. She needed to be for her mother. For those two weeks, she hadn't called or spoken to her mother. She was certain her mother must be bothered about her and Cassie's well-being, and the last thing she wanted to do was pretend everything was fine when everything was far from being fine.
"Come on, let's go in." Before she could protest, Bayo assisted her into the bus, his hand on her back, and she could hear the others murmuring about her. It was one of those things that had been constant these past two weeks. She thought with time people ought to speak less, but instead, she remained their number one favourite topic to discuss.
Bayo led them to the last seat at the back of the bus, he blessed her with the window seat, as if he knew she was craving it, and sat beside her. Most of the students that followed ignored the remaining seats at the back. It was more painful to see Cassie taking the seat farthest from her.
"Are you sure you are okay?" Bayo asked again when he saw her eyes lingering on Cassie.
"I'm fine."
He nodded.
Moyo faced the window looking at nothing in particular. She wished Aaron was here; after all, he was the only one she could speak freely to. She felt a hand on her ears and soon, Asake's, 'Lonely at the top' filled her ears. She turned to see Bayo nodding his head slowly to the song with his eyes closed.
The sound of Asake's voice drained out most of the voice of the other students making Moyo smile, maybe Bayo wasn't all that bad. He knows how to make her feel at ease.
She lay her head on the seat and let the song do its magic of transporting her soul to another world; a world of no worries.
They were to spend the weekend at the location where the movie would be shot. According to Ms William, it was to familiarize them with the environment and create a cordial relationship among the characters. It also serves as a getaway weekend for them. Aaron was exempted from following the rest of the students because he had the dual role of lead actor and producer. He went with the rest of the teachers.
According to Moyo's research on Google map, the journey was supposed to take less than four hours – Osun state wasn't that far from Lagos. It was just a long line on the map, but it felt like Moyo had been on the bus for days. Bayo hadn't said a word since the ride started, but she had heard a low snore emit from him. He was cute when he wasn't flirting with her.
At some point, the whole bus went silent like everyone was tired of talking. Most of the students were asleep, but Moyo remained wide awake. She wished the bus was taking her back to Ibadan, where her parents lived.
"Ehn... Wake up. We're there." Moyo felt someone shaking her. Slowly, she opened her eyes to see a smiling Bayo. "Finally. I thought I would need the aid of water to wake up."
Ignoring him, she proceeded to yawn and tried stretching, that was when she noticed the bus had stopped. "Are we there?"
Bayo smiled, "I thought I said that already."
Soon, everyone got off the bus. The teachers were already there waiting for them. Moyo searched for Aaron until she saw him at one side pressing his phone. He didn't spare anyone a glance.
"Welcome. I hope the journey was not stressful?" Ms. Williams addressed the students. As expected, the crew started making noises without anyone hearing what the other person was saying.
"Okay. Okay. I know we are all tired and ready to sleep. We already booked rooms for everyone; two in a room, and to avoid argument and disorderliness. We already paired you all. Just check this list; it contains your roommate's name and your room number." She placed a list at the back of their car, while people queued to check. Moyo waited at the end of the queue with Bayo behind her. Some smiled after checking the list, and a lot frowned and grumbled, but still went inside with their luggage. Moyo wondered what kind of person they might have paired her with. Almost all the students hated her, so it wouldn't be that easy for her.
She felt an icy glance being thrown at her, when she looked up, she saw Cassie glaring at her.
Oh no!
There certainly was no need to check the list anymore, she already knew her roommate, but for safety's sake, she went ahead to check the list again. To her surprise, she wasn't paired with Cassie as she thought, but with Shewa. She heaved in relief. Shewa wasn't the best option, but anyone that's not Cassie would do.
She moved aside waiting for Bayo, when she heard him murmur, "Are you kidding me?"
She moved towards him, "What happened?"
Bayo lifted his small bag, "I'm paired with your lover boy."
As if summoned, Aaron appeared behind them, "I can see that you have taken up a hobby of badmouthing me. Let's go, roomy." He draped his hand over Bayo's shoulder. "Sorry Princess, I need to sleep tonight. We'll talk tomorrow."
It wasn't that late yet, but she nodded. Bayo was silent as he followed Aaron. It looked comical to see them united at once. They both looked handsome together.
When she got to the room assigned to her, Shewa was already there throwing things to one side. She was certain she had picked up a side to be doing that.
Moyo forced a smile, "Good evening."
Of course, it was ignored as she expected. After throwing things to her satisfaction, she settled on the bed she had picked.
Moyo had to pack some of the things again before she settled on the bed too. This was going to be a long weekend.
