Cassie's Anger
The whole mansion was nothing less than hot. When Moyo had thought she was starting to get comfortable in her parent's house, Cassie made her aware; she hadn't seen a place to stay, yet.
It made Moyo crave her mother's place. Every day, she tried to find a suitable way to bring up the topic until a faithful day. The whole family was seated at the table; Moyo had known better than to sit close to Cassie now.
One day, the stew had found its way to her clothes and eyes courtesy to Cassie, but she had denied it. Another day, she had accidentally poured water on her body. Sitting next to Cassie means an accident. They tried their best to avoid each other at the mansion and also at school. It was uncomfortable for Moyo as she was never used to keeping such malice.
Now, she sat beside her father, who kept putting little things on her food and asking if she was okay. And it seemed like the perfect moment to ask her question.
Moyo cleared her throat noisily with the intention of getting other's attention, and it worked.
"What?" Cassie glared at her.
Moyo turned her smile towards their mother, "Ma, I have a request."
"What?" Her father turned to her with an equally dashing smile. Whenever he was around, they got closer, so she was getting a bit comforting around him.
"I was thinking if I could go visit my mother this weekend. I haven't seen her in a long time."
Florence was about to place her food in her mouth; paused. She shared a strange look with George that caught Moyo's eyes.
Were they about to reject her idea?
She frowned; they had taken her from her mother and hadn't returned her mother's daughter, and there was no one to help her mother back at home. Was spending a weekend at her place too much to ask for?
It was George who responded, "Moyo darling, you haven't spent a term completely here and we don't think it's a good idea to visit your..." he shared another look with Florence, "You know. This is your home now. This is your mother. Whatever you want to do; do it with her. Anywhere you want to go; go with her. Have fun. Get used to her."
Moyo stared at him. She didn't feel hungry anymore. She already knew they would reject them, and that was why she had waited this long before bringing up the idea to them.
"But... It's just a weekend."
What if she informed them that she wanted to go back home, which she still planned on doing?
Truly, life was easier for her here. She got things she could have only dreamed of. She ate whatever she wanted, but it wasn't home for her.
"We know darling, but going there will destroy the progress we have made with you over here. Maybe later, but not now."
She continued staring at them in disbelief.
How could they be selfish?
Annoyed, Moyo dragged her chair back, making noises in the process, but she hardly cared. She pointed at Cassie, who wore a smirk on her face, "Look at this. Look at this. You guys came to my place to take me from my mother claiming I am your real daughter, but you didn't bother to return her real daughter to her. You wanted to have us both all for yourself. I know you guys raised Cassie and have a closed bond with her, and it's just like that with my mother too, I share a close bond with her and I want to see her. She's out there, all by herself without help."
Moyo shook her head, "I can help her. I can be your daughter, but continue to live with her."
Annoyed, Cassie jumped up from her seat, "Why are you making this about me? You're trying to get rid of me, right?"
She turned towards her mother, "Mum, she's trying to manipulate you to return me to her wretched parents." She flaunts her hand dismissively and runs out of the dining room.
Florence turned to Moyo; she wanted to say something but ran towards Cassie with a loud sigh.
George sighed.
Moyo hadn't meant to spoil breakfast that morning, but she had accidentally done that.
Moyo expected George to lash out at her, but he just sat at the table and stared at nothing as if he was lost in thought.
Was there a big deal to what she had said? She wondered.
After standing there for minutes without anything, she frowned and left for her room.
Moyo picked up her phone and called her mother. She was confused and had no idea what to say. She needed an elderly person to talk to, but surely not one who lived in the same house as her.
Her mother didn't pick up until the fifth ring. Normally, she would have given up on calling her, but she was desperate. She needed to talk to someone. And she needed it now.
Her mother's voice sounded tired on the phone, "Hello, Okomi. How are you?"
Maybe it was hearing her mother's voice or the whole situation that undid Moyo; she felt tears drop from her eyes. "I miss you, mummy."
"What happened, Okomi? Did anyone do something to hurt you?" Her mother's voice sounded at alert now, like she could see and feel what Moyo was feeling. Such was a mother's instinct.
Moyo shook her head before realizing her mother couldn't see her that way.
"I'm fine, mummy, but I want to see you. Can't you come over here to pick me up? I have a lot of things to discuss with you."
"Moyo! Moyosore Ajoke Ade! Moyosore! How many times did I call you?"
Moyo frowned, "Three times."
"That's your home now. If your parents bring you over, then it's fine. But, if they don't want to, there's nothing I can do about it."
It wasn't what she had expected, "But mummy..."
Her mother shushed her, "Don't Ajoke. Don't try to argue with your parents, and don't have the wrong ideas in your head. That's not the way I trained you. I trained you to be responsible and listen to your elder's advice. If they say no, then it's not."
She wanted to argue and bring out points, but she knew her mother's word was final. No one knew exactly how she felt. She was more confused now. If only her mother would allow her to talk.
"Do you hear me, Ajoke Ade. Don't think negatively. Your parent wants what is best for you."
Moyo nodded. As she was about to hang up, she heard a knock on the door.
