A Friend

Moyo got to class late; it didn't seem anyone was inclined to direct a new student to her class. They were all busy discussing how the holiday had gone and what they had gotten for themselves and their friends. One of the janitors had directed her after seeing a student walking aimlessly in the school.

The class was bigger than she expected, and just a few students were there. A teacher was at the board; she turned as Moyo entered the class.

"Yes. What can I do for you?"

Moyo looked at the students whose eyes were all trained on her. She had never been a good public speaker before. "I am... I am... new."

Annoyed, the teacher stopped her before she could complete her words. "Why are you stuttering? Can't you speak normally?"

Out of the students staring at her, she could see Cassie smirking at her. She focused on the teacher. "New student."

The teacher sighed, "Great. A new student. Did your family just hit money or did you just relocated here?"

Moyo had no idea how she was supposed to answer that question. She didn't think the teacher needed a response from her, so she kept quiet.

The teacher eyes her as if she could detect her status from her wears, and for the first time, she was thankful not to be wearing the clothes her mother had bought her. It'd have been embarrassing.

"Come on. Introduce yourself to the class."

Moyo stood in front of the class, all attention on her. She could feel her knees shaking, so she focused on the one familiar face to her. "Good day, everyone. I'm Moyosore Zamani..." She realized what she just said and cleared her throat. "I mean, Moyosore Adeleke. Pleased to meet you all."

The student murmured.

The teacher shook her head before asking her to take one of the vacant seats at the back; there was one more vacant seat.

Moyo sat at the back, and the class resumed back.

Instead of paying attention to the students, she focused on what the teacher was teaching, and she had to be honest; the teacher might be rude, but her teaching was better than her previous school. She explained everything in an easy term, making it easier for her to assimilate.

As soon as the teacher left the class, the students turned on her, except for a few who had no interest in her.

"What did you say your surname is again? Adeleke. Like Cassie's Adeleke?" A robust girl teased, her eyes dancing excitedly as if this was fun.

Cassie glared at her, "Shewa, don't ever link my surname to some newcomer lowlife."

Shewa swallowed, "Ooh. I see you've already make enemy of Cassie. I really hope you enjoy your time in King's Crest."

As Cassie had outwardly named her an outcast, most students ignored her. Moyo sighed. Just great. This was the kind of life she wanted for herself, she thought sarcastically. She missed her school. Back at home, she attended a public school, but it was so lively. There was no outward bullying like this, and the students didn't group themselves based on what a student said.

Soon, another teacher came into the class. Her gaze landed on Moyo, and she smiled.

"A new student."

Moyo almost disappeared into her chair. Was it written on her forehead that she was a new student, or did the teacher know all the students in this school? Well, that was possible, considering there can't be more than twenty students in this class. She was in the school's Art department, and honestly, she was surprised that Cassie was also an Art student like her.

"Can you introduce yourself again?"

Reluctantly, Moyo dragged herself up and introduced herself. This time, she got the name right. The teacher smiled at her and introduced herself as Miss William, the Literature teacher. Unlike the previous teacher, Miss William seemed nice and tried to carry her along during the class.

A sudden knock on the door brought the class to another impromptu stop. Miss William walked to the door and opened it. The principal walked in with a student: tall, handsome, and definitely way out of Moyo's league. She stared at the guy like all the female students stared shamelessly at him.

The principal whispered something into Miss William's ears and left the class.

Miss Williams smiled at the new guy, "I guess we are having another new student today. Please, introduce yourself to the class."

The guy didn't smile at the class and didn't look nervous. "I'm Aaron Balogun." He didn't add anything to it, but the class started clapping. Having no idea why they were, Moyo didn't join them. They hadn't given her the same reception when she had introduced herself.

"Please, take the vacant sit at the back, Mr. Balogun."

He took the seat next to Moyo and brought out his book. Miss. Williams continued teaching, and Moyo focused back on the teacher alone. The only positive thing Moyo saw about this school was their teacher. They had great teachers.

When Miss Williams left, another teacher came in, and it was too busy for anyone to harass her or gossip. Not that Moyo was complaining about that, but she was hungry. She didn't finish her breakfast earlier that morning.

Immediately, it was lunchtime; Moyo was the first to stand from her seat. She had no idea where the school cafeteria was, but she was certain most students would move in the direction she was ready to follow. But, to her surprise, the student flocked to Aaron's table.

She stood still, hoping they wouldn't harass the new guy.

"Are you the same Aaron Balogun; the author of 'Locked Dreams'?" A guy asked.

Aaron didn't respond; he only grumbled.

The guy nodded as if it was a response, "Of course, he is. There was a reason there is no picture of you online because apart from being such an amazing writer, you are also this good looking. Wow. I think our department has the best looking guy now. Those science students are in for it."

Moyo shook her head; typical rich children. These were their problems when they were real problems in the world.

She moved out of the class, but a hand stopped her. "Are you also a new student here?"

Aaron stood before her, his hands in his pocket and that calm look on his face. How had he escaped from their questions? She turned back to see the class staring at her, the female looking at her with bad eyes. She turned back to Aaron, "Yes."

He sighed. "Can we have lunch together? Please, help me. I don't want to sit with one of these wolves." He whispered.

Moyo smiled, "Its okay. I was going to sit alone before."

Aaron nodded and led them to the cafeteria.

The school cafeteria was big, and the students were allowed to serve themselves. Moyo picked up almost everything on her plate. She was hungry and wouldn't pretend otherwise.

Aaron looked at her as they sat down, "Are you sure you will finish all this?"

Moyo stared at her plate and smiled, "Of course. I eat a lot."

He nodded and focused on his meal.

Moyo started digging into her food, and soon, she was done eating. Although Aaron didn't say much, he was still a great company to her. It was better than sitting alone at the table.

The rest of the class went pretty uneventful; it was class upon class upon class. At a point, Moyo felt tired. Every teacher attended their classes, even though she had prayed for a teacher's absence so she could rest a bit, her prayer was obviously ignored.

At the end of the day, everyone was too tired to bully anyone except Cassie. She moved toward the back and sat in front of Aaron like they were old friends while the rest left the class.

"Hello, Aaron. I'm Cassandra Adeleke, but you can call me Cassie."

He ignored her just like he had ignored the other students, but that didn't stop Cassie.

"My dad owns Adeleke publishing company. We publish your books, and I must say you write amazing stories. I love all your books."

"Thank you." He grumbled.

That brought a smile to Cassie's face, "So, can I have your number?"

"No."

"Why?" She looked confused.

"I don't give my numbers to strangers. Only friends."

Moyo stared at them because Cassie was her only way home, and she was waiting for her to stop flirting shamelessly and take her home.

"We can be friends."

"Not interested."

Just like that, he dismissed Cassie and turned to Moyo, "Can I have your number,  fellow new student?"

Moyo blinked; this was trouble. "I'm sorry but I don't have a phone."

His calm expression didn't change. He didn't look surprised. "Fine. You can give me your number when you get a phone."

He left the class.

Moyo turned to Cassie, who glared at her. Thankfully, there was no one in the class. "Find your way home yourself."

She turned away while Moyo ran after her. She barely knows anywhere here. If Cassie should abandon her, she wouldn't find her way anywhere.

She held Cassie's clothes, "But I don't know anywhere here."

Cassie shrugged, "Not my business. If you know how to steal things that doesn't belong to you, you should know your way around."
