Uncomfortable Conversation
Angela's Point Of View;
Uncle Alaric managed to revive the guy on the ground and he was mourning while holding his head. I kind of felt sorry for him. The police came followed by Misty and they arrested Fane. I got off of her but kept a firm hold on her hands so that she won't break away and cause the police more trouble. But what she said about my troubles just beginning really had me worried. Misty came up to us carrying shopping bags. Did he really continue his shopping spree while I was busy facing criminals?
When he got near us, he handed me my phone right away. He didn't even seem fazed by the intense situation of all the cops around flooding into the store. At the same time, an officer that was a 6-foot-tall muscular Lion who stood upright and his mane was rather short as he could comfortably fit a red French-styled hat on his head. He had the same face paint I had seen on the Chief Roves but a scar going over his right eye that was a different color from the other eye that wasn't slashed. He didn't wear a police uniform like the rest, instead, he wore a black suit. He asked Uncle Alaric to describe what had taken place. I was glad he didn't want me to talk to him as I found him intimidating.
Uncle remained in the sight of Misty & me as they spoke. Misty was busy listening to it but I had other matters pressing on my mind. I had entered the location of the Angela they knew into the new phone cause I didn't know how long this form would last& if I would retain this knowledge after it left. The zap of my finger was expected now so I didn't have much of a reaction to it this time.
As I did this I wondered when I should tell them this. I could wait until we all were in or near the van. But how would I break this news to them and how they would react if I do? They obviously look up to this girl and depend on her. But it would be even worse to just keep it to myself and continue impersonating her. I don't know how to go about this, I wish there was a transformation to help me figure this out.
Then Uncle Alaric called my name breaking me out of my thoughts. He signaled for me to come closer to where he stood near the scary lion wearing a red cap in a black suit with a burning cigar and cane.
I hated the scent of those things, I wish he would put it out, at least when he was around me. At school, they talked about the effect of those things and I didn't want to inhale that. But I would not have the guts to say it.
When I stood right in front of him he was so tall and wore a frown. I saw on his shirt a name tag on the badge he wore on his front pocket. It said, Detective Goodfield.
"That's when Angela came to our rescue. You can ask the other witnesses that were in the store," Uncle Alaric said seeming to finish a sentence.
"Well, I know you have a reputation for saving people. Which is one thing we have in common. So let's put the past behind us and you can tell me what happened after the other witnesses left."
He spoke in a dry tone to me and even though he wore glasses his eyes felt filled with a no-nonsense look. I didn't know what past this Angela had with this guy but the way his eyes were set on me, it wasn't a good one. First, he put out the cigar and I felt like I could breathe again. Then I told the simple truth of what happened but didn't look up at him much. He used his tablet to record me as I now noticed that is what the other witnesses were being used to take statements. After I spoke he simply turned it off and took a deep breath then exhaled.
"Thank you for behaving like a mature adult for once. And do you mind telling me where you will be staying in case I need to get in touch with you again?" Thankfully Uncle Alaric came back into the conversation at this point to answer the detective.
"I can give you the direct address sir. We'll all be together."
"Very well and one more thing Angela; 8 more people who you have placed in jail have escaped," Detective Goodfield said as he nodded to Uncle's response.
"How come?" Misty put in his question showing that he had been listening the entire time.
"You will have to ask the people in charge there. So be careful,"Then Detective Goodfield turned back on the recording device as Uncle told him where we would be. After that, he walked away and I was left wondering why would he tell me that. His tone didn't even change when he said it almost like he was instructed to do so but didn't really want to. If Angela could get on the bad side of a person like that she must have been one fearless kid. It was like my very presence annoyed him.
"That really was mature of you Angela not to bring up the past," Uncle Alric said as we walked out through the doors of the supermarket.
"Yeah, normally when it's Detective Goodfield your interactions are a lot more entertaining," Misty said playfully bumping into my shoulder with his own. I just nodded to it even though I didn't have the slightest idea why. To me, he was a huge scary stranger. Her life is a lot more complicated than I thought.
"Well, I for one am glad that it didn't. So we can get out of here and actually make it in time for the reunion. Let's go, we can pick up some stuff elsewhere since everything else here will likely go into evidence lockup," Uncle replied as he lead us from going back to the mall. Instead, he passed the shopping carts at the side of the grocery and got onto the pavement. I could see that we were taking a shorter route to the car park. It was a little disappointing as I would have liked the first picture I take on my new phone to be of the colorful water path into the mall.
"Why would they need to take it there? How is it even evidence?" I asked as we passed it.
"That's a good point, would you like to tell them that?" He looked at me with eyes saying 'Don't push this topic.' It reminded me of how much this guy didn't know me at all. I never push topics of conversation with people. The topics I must talk about are hard enough.
"On second thought, it's none of my business" I answered my own question out loud as we approached the car.
"Good, 'cause we really need to get going if we're going to make it in time. This stuff I bought can't be out on in a moving car and probably take an hour or more just to apply them all," Misty said with a tone of relief that I wasn't going to go back and look to find out why they needed everything in the grocery store as evidence. But what concerned me more was that he planned on applying all of whatever he bought this same evening.
"You're kidding right?"
"Come on you know Misty by now. When it comes to stuff like that, he'd never kid. Anyway let's get going,"
Uncle said as we all got into the car and left the parking lot. It was a short comfortable silent ride to another store on the way to this "aunt's" home. I wouldn't have minded staying in the car but since I had barely eaten anything at lunch I saw the opportunity to get something I would want. Uncle took a grocery cart and I followed behind him along with Misty. The grocery store was familiar where it had aisles and cashiers so I could navigate through it easily.
Uncle was buying all sorts of strange stuff that you could tell were healthy options. When we got to the snack aisle I was even more disappointed because I didn't recognize a single treat. It was all sorts of vegan snacks and Misty was just throwing most of them in the grocery trolly. Even though it looked appetizing enough it wasn't what I wanted. Something else was weird about this grocery. We had been all through it and it had no meat aisle. As we were standing in line, I voiced my concern to Misty.
"Is this a vegan grocery?"
"Um yeah sure," He answered giving me a questioning look.
"So there are separate groceries for vegans and those who eat anything meat-like," By that time Uncle had finished paying the cashier who was a llama. He and the cashier looked at me as if I had told them the building was on fire. I now felt really uncomfortable and Misty came closer to me pulling me out of line so the other person behind me could cash.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"Angela, meat has been outlawed for the past 200 years worldwide. In fact, it's not something spoken of unless yr researching the topic. It's a horrible conversation starter," Misty said in a familiar scolding voice.
"Animals have just as much right to live as we do," Uncle put in.
The cashier must have been listening cause I heard him say, "True that."
"Yeah, and you of all people should know that," Misty said giving me a suspicious look and even though the cashier didn't look toward me I felt his irritation. I've clearly offended everyone. This reminds me of why I don't talk much. I always end up saying the wrong thing. We got back to the car with me in the front seat in silence. So apparently eating meat was bad here because of animal rights but no one told them about secondhand smoke. Why am I not surprised?
"I would be angry at that statement you made at the grocery but I know your interaction with Detective Goodfield can bring out the worst in you. So we'll chalk it up to a temporary lapse in judgment, OK. But I expect better behavior when we get to Aunt."
I nodded in agreement with Uncle Alaric as he started the engine. I felt a lot of relief when he said that. For a second I thought he would question me on why I had no knowledge of the meat thing. But it left me to question why Detective Goodfield would have that effect on Angela. This would be so much easier if she left a diary. But I guess that's one thing we have in common cause I don't have one either. I mean until now I wouldn't have had anything worth writing down in my life. Since this was her normal maybe she felt the same.
