Sleepover (part 1)
Angela's Point Of View;
As we drove in Misty's Uncle's car it reminded me of a minivan. But it was much more luxurious on the inside. It was roomy on the inside and the backseat had tablets. Misty's uncle could even give it verbal commands and it obeyed. I was a little nervous about where they were taking me. Usually, when I go for car rides it's with people I know. And those I know who can afford stuff like this, are my extended family. They only give us a ride when it was too late to travel home.
I didn't want to touch anything in the car. If anything in here broke, there would be no way I could replace anything. I planned on staying quiet cause I didn't want to drop any more hints that I don't belong here. Apparently Misty didn't have the same idea. We had only spent 5 minutes driving and I already knew he was planning on talking throughout this whole trip. He was really interested in making this fun. But I was ok with silence. I found staring out the window and passing other places entertaining enough. I've never really gone for many car rides so it was a good chance for me to just enjoy the scenery.
But I kept in mind that Misty didn't know this. I didn't want to be rude and I would have to try my best to blend in. So I agreed to play his video games from the back seat tablet. When in Rome I guess. He wanted to compare our high scores but I wasn't a gamer. So it was obvious that I would lose. But gaming with him was actually fun, just like having a brother. We played games like dominos, solitaire, and piano tiles. I never really cared for games before. After that, he suggested that we play Roblox. When I told him that I didn't have an account in it, it was like I said I don't breathe oxygen.
I didn't have many electronics besides my phone. And that was just to make important calls since it was those old-time ones with buttons. Of course, I wasn't going to share those details with him. Just then Misty's uncle stopped off at a drive-through ice cream parlor. The large holographic shape of an ice cream cone was on the building structure. It wasn't a normal structure as it was futuristic and hovered a foot above the ground. That wouldn't have been weird but I kid you, not an actual cow-like person greeted us. Well, at least I knew it was fresh milk they used. A virtual menu then popped up outside Misty's uncle's car window and he asked us what we wanted.
I couldn't really see to read anything from where I was. So I asked Misty to read it out and then choose so his uncle would select one. I didn't recognize most of the flavors but I ended up choosing a coconut caramel dark chocolate bar. After we had decided the cow-like lady seemed to know Misty's uncle. They stood to chat while we waited for what they called the 3D printer to make the ice cream. I had only heard of such a thing but I've never tried any food from one. How popular was his uncle? He seemed to know everyone.
After we got our ice cream and I tased mine, I admit that it tasted very different from ice cream normally tasted. It wasn't bad, just different. But ice cream was ice cream so I ate it. We then continued on our way. It was beginning to get even later. On seeing this Misty's uncle told us that we were almost there. That was a relief after eating ice cream I was starting to feel like I couldn't sit still for much longer. Misty and his uncle then began to speak about the family reunion. That conversation involved those they couldn't wait to see.
I listened more cause I didn't know any of the people they were talking about. Then a sudden silence fell in the conversation and Misty's uncle directed a question to me. It caught me off guard when he asked, "Angela I noticed that when you and Misty played those video games you had to go extremely close to the screen. When last did your eyes check?"
Did he really pay that close attention to me all this time? I struggled to find a response. I didn't want to lie but I doubt he would believe the truth. But that shouldn't stop me, cause the only thing he could do was tell me to get out of his car. And I was used to walking everywhere anyway. "Um, maybe when I was in kindergarten?"
"What? That long ago! No wonder you had me read out the flavors on the menu to you. I thought you were just being lazy." Misty exclaimed.
That was what he thought of me? That made me look away from them and then shift uncomfortably. "Oh well um no but I'm sorry about that... I normally just choose one type of ice cream that I'm familiar with, but they didn't have it there." I said.
His uncle then broke back into the conversation and said in a kind non-threatening voice, "That's not the point it's been too long. What happened to the glasses you use to wear?"
That made me feel better cause the last thing I wanted was to be criticized. "Um well, I lost it in the ocean," I answered.
He immediately asked, "How did that happen?"
"She jumped overboard for some reason," Misty replied before I could.
Well, that was true as I did lose it in the ocean. It just wasn't their ocean but his uncle had another question for me upon hearing that. "Why on earth did you do that?" He asked.
"I can't exactly explain it, " was my answer and I honestly couldn't.
He then sighed loudly and said, "Well you have to think before you do things like that Angela. I'll make an appointment for you to see the optometrist tomorrow."
That last part surprised me. Normally when I tell people my problems they just hope I get through with whatever. It was really my parents' responsibility so if they can't do it I knew then it won't get done. It was my turn to ask him a question. "You would do that for a stranger?"
I could see he looked up in the rearview at me as he answered, "Hello we're all family here meaning we have to look out for each other."
"Yep, and we all know you're half-blind without them. You know there are eye drops that you can use that can provide up to 18 hours of clear vision." Misty added to his uncle's statement.
That seem to start a banter between the two as his uncle replied, "Which are for adults 21 and over, not preteens."
"Not in Japan," Misty responded.
"Well we are not in Japan now, are we?" his uncle asked rhetorically,
I didn't say anything in their debate. I was most awestruck by his uncle both caring and even knowing about how my eyesight was. This other Angela girl was really similar to me but the difference was she had a family who really took note of her. The family I knew would talk about how the family is important to them because it sounded nice. But didn't care to know a single thing about me. I guess they were afraid that I would have expected them to help like how Misty's uncle did. All I really wanted from them is care about me or at least invite me to do things with them. I wonder if they saw me or even thought about me at all.
There may not have been much to know about me but their lack of interest still bothered me. I think Misty's uncle really means what he says though. I wonder if this Angela in this world's family may have some social status. Unlike mine
I should get to know more about this Angela and her family. She apparently has a life that I could only ever dream about. The conversation finally went back to the family reunion after Misty's uncle won the debate. Apparently, he's the only other person who could out-talk that boy. Then completely changing the topic Misty asked, "So what are we going to wear at this reunion? I'm not sure if to go formal or casual."
"Aim to dress Semi-formal so like a shirt but no tie sort of event." His uncle replied.
It looked like I would be attending this thing with them so I might as well see what I can wear. I don't have any formal clothes. "Um, can I borrow something from you Misty? You're a bit taller than me but-"
Misty cut me off midsentence, "Angela, I know my style is unmatched and the envy of most people but you have your own clothes so, wear them."
That was news to me that I just blurted out, "I do?"
"Well, why do you think my trunk can barely stay closed? You packed so much that you're caretaker had to repack everything so both yours and Misty's clothes could fit." His uncle said after lightly chuckling.
"Yep, we both overpacked, you got more space by default though since my sister made me bring you a suitcase from her fashion line that you wanted," Misty agreed.
So the bag that was at my side that held a towel and a few changes of clothes and sneakers wasn't even half of it. But what caught my attention the most was what Misty just revealed to me about himself. "You have a sister?!" I asked.
He then started to search through his bag while talking. "Of course, duh! Why do you sound so surprised? You've met all 3 of them already."
He then pulled out his phone from his bag and showed me a picture. It was all of us in front of a mall. His 3 sisters were gorgeous enough to all be models and they were all older. I already knew that he seemed to be the model type so it made sense that he had sisters who possibly groomed him to be how he is today. In the picture even I well.. their Angela looked happy.
She wore clothes that weren't worn out. In fact, I've never seen those clothes before. Wow, I guess it's possible for someone who is similar to me physically to actually looked pretty enough to fit in with this crowd. But this Angela's glasses were different than mine that got washed away. Good thing I'm short-sighted otherwise I wouldn't be able to look or read at anything of what Misty was showing me. I'm guessing when I go through her things I'll learn a lot more. Maybe then it would all make a bit more sense to the life this girl lives.
