Her Last Present

I remember when I was 17 years old I used to take long walks at night. As for why, I felt relaxed walking into the quiet, empty streets. It just makes me forget about the rough things I go through for a while.

One night when I was walking around like I usually do I found a woman sleeping on the ground that I've never seen before when I walked here. There was a little girl close to her playing with what seemed like a stuffed animal. I walked closer to the girl's view and she smiled at me, asking me to stay with her for a bit.
"Is there anything I can do for you?" I asked looking into her innocent blue eyes. Knowing that she's homeless, she might be hungry or cold or something so I gave her the 20$ that I had.
"Thank you! Mommy will be happy when she sees this!" She cheered. I smiled at her and promised that I'll be visiting her every night at the same place where I met her.
"Does that mean we're friends now?" She asked giving me a curious look.
"Yes. And if you ever need anything, remember that you have a friend who can help you."

"My name is Sally. What's your name? " she asked.

"I'm Helen, it's nice to meet you Sally." I replied. "I need to go now, I will see you again tomorrow."

I visited her every night like I promised. She asked me one night to teach her how to write, so I started teaching her that. The first word that I had taught her was Love. Her mother was really happy that her daughter's learned how to write, as she didn't have money to bring Sally to school. And despite the huge difference between me and Sally, we became great friends.

A month later, when I came to visit Sally again, I saw her mother all alone, crying. When I asked her about Sally, she told me that she got really sick last night, and died because there was no medicine for her to take.
The mother told me that before Sally died, she asked to give me a present that she's made. It was a piece of white cloth where the word "Love" was sewed on in cursive letters just like how I taught her to write it.

"She made this all by herself for you. As thanks for being her only friend." The mother sobbed. I hugged her tightly as tears started to stream down my face. Once I took the cloth the mother smiled at me and thanked me for all the help.
Years passed, and I still kept the present. Until one day, I went to the beach and took it with me. Every time I look at this cloth it only reminds me of Sally's death, I cry every time I hold it and look at it.
I looked at it one last time as tears started streaming down my face, my inner voice telling me not to do this...I threw the cloth into the water looking at it as it slowly dissapeared into the water. I'm sorry,Sally.

I'm so sorry...
