Chapter 28: Finding True Peace
Gold laughed and hugged Sarah, "come on, let's get out of here. I'll call a cab."
"It's okay, my ride is out front," Arthur smiled, "I called Jackson."
As they got outside, Jackson stood by Joker's red SSC Tuatara.
"Wanna race back to your place, Gold?" Arthur joked, "or would you like to visit my place?"
"No," Gold frowned.
"Papa, he's joking," Sarah giggled.
"I'm not sure he is," Gold narrowed his eyes.
"Could I take Sarah for a ride, at least? I'd like to show her something."
"I bet, and you've already shown her more than enough!"
Arthur chuckled but blushed, "nothing like that, Sir. You can come too."
Mr Gold sighed.
"If you do, Jessie can take your truck to his place," Jackson nodded.
Arthur shrugged, "awe come on, Gold. I want to show you guys a surprise."
"Fine. Just don't drive like a madman in that thing," Gold teased him.
Arthur opened the door for Sarah and she sat in But Gold got the backseat. He was just being protective over his daughter again. He did trust Arthur, but still he was just being a father.
"D'you want me to buy you a ring too?" Arthur teased him as he got into the car.
Gold was about to snap at him when Arthur began to laugh. He then realized Arthur was teasing, and he began to laugh too.
He then fired up the engine and sped off, out of the city. He made sure never to break the speed limit though. Once they reached the country they eventually stopped at a beautiful old farmhouse.
"Well what do you think, honey? I was thinking we could all live here once we're married."
"Ok I feel like you two read each other's minds," Gold chuckled.
Sarah squealed happily and hugged Arthur, "It's beautiful."
"Wait a minute," Gold said, "How were you able to house look while you were locked up? Did Jackson or your goons do this?"
"I got creative," Arthur smirked.
"Which means Jackson did it for you?" Mr Gold said.
"Yes, but I picked it out," he chuckled.
He then took Sarah's hand, "let me show you around, you're going to love it princess. There's stables, and a pool, hot tub for you Mr Gold-"
"Why would the hot tub interest me, Arthur?"
"I read somewhere it can help with leg pain," Arthur explained.
Sarah then giggled at Arthur. He was sweet.
They then walked around the house, checking everything out.
"There's so many rooms here and it's so large, your friends could even move in if you'd like. You know, the girls. You're like sisters after all."
"Isn't that a bit cult-ish?" Gold asked, unsurely.
"I just want Sarah to be happy," Arthur replied, "I was also thinking about setting up a charity, you know, like a support group for young girls who've suffered childhood trauma. I'd like to name it after Lucilla, in her memory."
"...yeah no...," but when she heard about charity, she wondered about that. "That...maybe..."
"At the very least I think Lucilla and all the other girls who didn't make it out deserve a memorial garden or something," he looked down sadly "Jackson recently told me about one girl who didn't survive, she was only 4. They need to be remembered."
Sarah felt bad. She then hugged Arthur. He looked so hurt also. "We should." She smiled.
He smiled and hugged her, "so, do you like the house?"
Mr Gold nodded, "it's very nice. Thank you, Arthur. It's very thoughtful of you."
"And I love it. But not much as you." She rubbed her nose against his.
He chuckled and blushed, "you're too sweet."
"Shall we go home then, it's time for dinner," Gold smiled.
They headed back to the car and Arthur tossed him the keys.
"You know you wanna have a go driving this thing, Gold?"
Mr Gold then chuckled.
Back at the house, they were enjoying dinner together like a real family. Sarah never been to happy. Seeing her father and fiancé laughing together.
It was then late and Mr Gold showed Arthur to one of the guest rooms. Arthur thank Gold for dinner and for letting him stay. He then hugged Sarah and kissed her goodnight before going to bed. Gold then tucked Sarah in once she had her pajamas on.
Sarah then hugged him, "Papa? Can he atleast sleep with me...if I have a nightmare? I promise we won't do it again."
Gold sighed, "...alright. But I will lend him some pajamas. He isn't sleeping with you naked."
She giggled and nuzzled her nose against his. Gold chuckled and kissed her forehead. He then walked into his room and grabbed the pajamas for Arthur.
Gold went and knocked the door to Arthur's room. He answered just wearing a towel as he had just showered.
"Put these on," Gold handed him the pajamas.
"Oh, thanks, Gold."
"You can...you can sleep in Sarah's room. But you keep your clothes on, and no-"
"Funny business," Arthur nodded and smiled "thank you."
Gold nodded, "I know you both love each other, but you both aren't married yet...that's why...," he then went to bed.
Arthur understood and got dressed. Soon he quietly came into her room. He smiled shyly at her and went to her. He lay on the bed beside her and snuggled up to her. Sarah woke up and smiled seeing him.
"Sorry I woke you, princess," he kissed the side of her head, "Go back to sleep. I love you."
"It's ok. I love you too." She snuggled close to him.
He pulled the quilt around them and held her close. She buried her face in his chest and fell asleep. Arthur stayed awake a long time after, stroking her hair, watching over her as she slept. Until finally he fell asleep too.
Arthur was with Gold when he got up, but he noticed Sarah wasn't downstairs, "Where's Sarah?"
"Jessie took her somewhere. She wanted to talk to someone."
Arthur feared she maybe going to talk to The Joker or Harley, but Gold stopped him before he ran out the door, "relax, Fleck. She went to talk to a priest. She told me about her therapy. Her therapist was never listening to her so...she felt she had nowhere else to turn."
"Oh, right. I didn't realise Sarah was religious. I can I can understand why she would be though, because she's been through so much. But....why did she ask Jessie to take her? Why not you or me?" he was confused.
"I think she wants us to get to know one another more..."
"Uh...okay. So. What hobbies or interests do you have?" he figured that was better than asking him what his favorite color was.
"....," Mr Gold didn't know if he was ready to tell him about his magic side, because he was into magic, he liked to read mostly magic stuff, but he also couldn't lie, he will be his son in law, "...pass..."
"Alright I guess I'll go first. I enjoy comedy, dancing, watching old movies, dancing, and listening to old records. I also quite like smoking, but I've cut back a lot."
"You like...dancing a lot I guess, and yes you need to cut the smoking. I've done it once. Not worth it."
"I guess I found it helps with stress and anxiety, but I know. If ever I had a kid, I try to quit I guess."
"Maybe before the baby comes, besides I think Sarah would like it...Now atleast."
"I guess, but it will be a long time before there's a baby on the way," Arthur chuckled.
In town, Sarah and Jessie came to a stop at a church in Gotham. Sarah felt like they had to come here. Well...she did. If therapy wouldn't help, maybe getting closer to God would help. "Thanks, Jess'. I will be back, I promise." She got out and Jessie watched her protectively as she walked in.
The church looked old and choir music was playing around her from speakers. Almost similar to the angels singing when she was in Heaven. It even looked similar to the church she found herself there. This has to be the place to feel safe in. She came to the alter and looked at the cross before her.
A priest then came out of a door that led into the back. He noticed Sarah and smiled, "is there anything I can help you with my child?"
Sarah turned around seeing the priest. He seemed young than her father, but older than Arthur.
"Um...you see uh...this isn't easy to say. But...I will start...," she took a deep breath, but before she spoke up, the priest recognized her on the news.
"...Ah, you're Miss Sarah Gold. I'm sorry. But I have seen you on television. You've been through an awful lot." He set her down in the booths and she sat down beside him.
"I am...that's why I came here. I been through a lot since I was 14 years old....my father lost interest in me which caused me to run away. My kidnapper murdered my parents...hurt me...and my friends...after I was rescued...I had a hard time to tell anyone. All the foster parents I lived with abused me mentally and physically...until I came to one single parent. He too went through alot. He lost his wife and child he never met. I finally opened up one night to him when we moved back here. I was 17 the time, he said I should've went to a specialist to talk about it. I did this year, but it didn't help...everything got worse. One of my friends told me I should just end my life, in which...I-I did...I saw hell...but then I was saved."
"By the Son, am I right?"
"Y-yeah...I then saw my mother...my stepfather's wife, and his son...then He told me there was a reason why I was still alive and why my time wasn't up yet. He knew I was strong and a fighter. He wanted me to help others that been in the same situation. But the reason why I am here because...therapy isn't helping...I lost my faith before I took my own life which explains how I ended up in hell. And I did get my life back on straight with God, but...I just need help," she started cry.
"I know it can be hard to move on, and it is true you will remember those nightmares and trauma."
"But can you overcome it?"
"Of course you can. You can always ask anyone you know that have God part of their life to pray for you. I will. Does your father?"
"He's...he's thinking about it. He wants to be with his wife and son, but he is also having trouble to find God. I told him I am always open to tell him. I think he does believe He exists because of when I woke up when the doctors said there was nothing they could do to help me."
"What about your husband...or boyfriend?"
"I'm not sure. If not, I really want him to find God and I can help him. He was amazed how I survived from The Joker. It was because of God."
The priest smiled. He could tell she was a smart young lady. Of course it was God that helped her survive and fight for her life.
"Are you comfortable to tell him? Or would you rather bring him here? Your friend and maybe your father."
"Arthur my fiancé I could, but my father I think I should bring here...please don't judge him. My father is a good man. He is a way better than my real father. But...he studied witchcraft..."
The priest was shocked.
Sarah looked down, but she pulled her sleeves and brushed her hair aside where her scars use to be. "I use to have scars. I cut my arms. I had a huge gash on my cheek by The Joker, but you can't see it. He healed me. Yes I know that may sound wrong and Jesus is the only healer, but he really is a good man. He really is."
The priest sighed, "your father must be really important to you. I won't judge him. There are other Christians that have God to help them heal someone or even cast a demon out. But your father is really using dark magic. Maybe that's why he is having trouble to find him. He maybe using it for good, but one day that magic will turn him dark and change him bad. I maybe a little concerned for him. Maybe try to talk to him about it."
Sarah then nodded, "thank you...for listening to me."
"Of course, my child. You're welcome here anytime." He patted her shoulder and walked back to the door. Sarah sighed and got up and walked back outside.
Suddenly she jumped. Outside the supporters of Joker were in trucks, cars, and suvs heading to Blackgate. Sarah ran to Jessie, "Jessie what's happening!?"
"...they are pissed. They want to kill The Joker since the trial is taking forever." Jessie said.
