Chapter 33

They were all seated with Melanie and Toby seating next to each other facing Dr Cassie who had her hands folded in front of her and was in deep thought. They were starting to feel uneasy but neither of them talked.

Dr Cassie let out a long sigh. "Now it makes sense." She muttered still looking at the opposite wall with unseeing eyes. "Mara gave you heart her for a purpose, Melanie. I'd advice you not to kill yourself and thereby bringing all her efforts into waste by attempting to remove her heart.

Look, I know you're both confused and that's the purpose of this meeting. This will make you understand that the both of you having some kind of feelings for each other isn't coincidental.

"I do not have any kind of feelings for him. I-" she continued but was stopped by Dr Cassie who had her hand held up.

"It's pointless denying it, Walker." She narrowed her eyes at Melanie who shrunk back I'm her seat, keeping her mouth closed.

"I'd prefer if neither of you would interrupt me please. I was attending to an old woman some weeks after Melanie were discharged. She had cancer and I let her family know that the only way she could survive was through miracle. She had been staying In this hospital even before Mara died." At this point Toby stiffened and the muscles in his jaw keep thwarting.

"I was doing the regular check ups I do on her when the heart monitoring machine started beeping so loud and before we could do anything about it, it stopped abruptly and she stopped breathing." She paused and took a deep breath in.

"You must be wondering why I'm telling you this story that has nothing to do with Mara's death but I tell you, it has everything to do with it because before the woman's face was covered she jerked up and grabbed my hand which was exactly what Mara did before she finally died and guess what she said?" At this point tears were streaming down her face as she raised her voice. She was too young to have seen two miracle death. She was an atheist who didn't believe in God or that miracle happens, she only ever said it to her patient's family because that was the only thing she could do to prevent them from giving up on the victim's life. But now she had witnessed two miracles.

"She said and I quote: "The soul of the dead would not go to rest if her last wish is not granted, it wouldn't rest if those alive haven't made peace with her death. Tell that to Toby."

"The woman gave up the ghost after that but then I started to wonder, saying to myself that I had fulfilled her last wish by giving her heart to Melanie but then I realised that you, Toby have her heart with you. She might have donated her heart to Melanie physically but in the spiritual sense you own her heart because she loved you and you loved her back and the only way to fulfil her last wish is to love Melanie the same way you loved her and after that make peace with her death only then will Mara be able to get the rest she deserves."

"She wants you to love Melanie unconditionally like you loved her. That was the reason why she woke up and decided to give her heart to Melanie. And you, Melanie must wonder why you'd just fall in love with a random stranger when you first saw him but no, he might have been a stranger to you then but he wasn't a stranger to your heart which belonged to Mara."

"And you, Toby must wonder why you fell so easily in love with her after being so sure you couldn't fall in love again but you were wrong. Mara was smart to have left her heart for someone to bear so that you'd once again find love. I believe I've settled all there is to settle." With that she sat back in her chair and dismissed them. They both got out of the hospital and went their different ways, both thinking of what they had heard.

The sound of resounding applause woke Melanie from her deep thoughts. She looked confused as she had almost forgotten where she was. Today was the day her father finally handed the company to her. She had signed the transfer of ownership papers and the ones applauding her were her future business partners and staffs who were now engaging in conversations while holding a glass of wine in their hands. She wondered if she'd be able to fit with this group of beautiful people and excused herself to go to the restroom.

The reception area of the Hall they rented was decorated in gold theme. Along the wall to her right lined according to their height were paintings. Each one telling its own story. One particularly intrigued her. She moved closer to the painting but not before looking down the hall for anyone who might be there. The painting was of two women. It was painted to look as if they were floating in the air. What surprised her more was that one of the women was holding out her heart to the other woman whose hand was outstretched to accept it. There was an heart shaped hole on the chest of the woman holding her heart out.

Melanie gasped and jump back as she noticed someone's presence. Toby was standing next to her with a smirk. He was In a grey suit and trousers and looked eatable as usual.

He gestured to the painting with his head and cocked an eyebrow. "Do you like it?"

She shrugged. "It doesn't matter if I like it. It's can't be mine." She turned to walk away but he stopped her, placing his hand on her shoulder he bent to whisper in her ear.

"What if I told you it's yours?"

"Something tells me you are responsible for that painting."

"Well that something is right."

She turned to face him, disbelieve written all over her face.

"It's a gift."

"And why would you give me a gift."

"Its simple." He shrugged. "To welcome you to the business word and to my...heart."
