Her Guardian Angel

16 year old Emily Boyd walked out of Morrsburry High as the wind passed through her long black hair. She squinted at the faint figure of her guardian angel, James, who was now walking up to her from behind. He ever-so-slightly hovered off the ground. However, no one would notice, as at the moment he was only visible to her.
"So Em... I saw your grade on your biology test. I'm proud of you, you know... I mean, you got an A+." James telepathically spoke to Emily
"First of all, don't call me Em. You know I don't like it." James rolled his eyes.
"Second of all, thanks. I tried really hard." Emily replied, rubbing her arm.
"No problem, Em." he snickered emphasizing the last word. Emily glared at him, and James lightly punched her arm. She stuck out her bottom lip and made sad, puppy eyes.
"Oh stop it. You're such a faker." he said, rolling his eyes yet again.
You're going to roll your eyes right out of your head, Emily thought.
They continued to walk in silence. Emily looked at her surroundings,  The cool spring air brushed her exposed skin, sending shivers down her spine. The leaves on the trees rustled in the wind and flowers were just starting to bloom. Burst of maroon, fuchsia, violet, and yellow were slowly rising from the ground. The sky was a nice shade of blue, but there were dark, heavy clouds in the air. She began to hum a little tune.
After about 10 minutes there were footsteps coming up from behind them, getting faster and louder by the second. Emily didn't need to turn around though, as she already knew who it was.

"Emily!" two familiar voices called out from behind. The familiar voices were Samantha (Although she preferred to be called Sam), Emily's best friend, and Amanda, Sam's girlfriend. The two girls walked straight through James which made him shiver as he hated when people did that. Emily could practically taste his disgust it was so strong.
"Hey Emily, do you want to go to the café with us later?" Sam asked.
"Err sure?" Emily, but is seemed more like a question.
"Well, we have to turn here, but we'll see you later!" they said.
Emily and James walked the rest of the way in silence, and James turned completely visible. When they got to her house she stopped and fumbled around with her keys a little before she got the right one. She gently put the key in the keyhole and slowly turned it, as if almost reluctant to enter her own home. But the truth is, she was.
When they finally went inside, the scent of alcohol hit them like a wave almost immediately. In turn, they both scrunched up their noses, not wanting to inhale alcohol. But it wasn't just that, it seemed as if they didn't want to smell the misery in the room, the overpowering sadness that made it seem like things are never going to get better, because in truth that's how it felt. They quietly and slowly entered the house not wanting to wake the sleeping monster in the house. There had been a time when Emily and her father hadn't been living like this. Sadly, that time was just a memory, a fairytale gone wrong, because as soon as her mother died last year, everything had stopped. When her mother and brother were at the house, life seemed like a dream. But her mother had passed and her brother was in college, so that time was no more.
Everything was going fine until Emily's foot accidently hit one of the many beer bottles that littered the ground. It bumped into another making a 'clink' sound. Suddenly there was the sound of springs shifting.
"W-who's... there?" The voice slurred. The monster had awoken. She watched her father slowly arise from the couch and stumble toward her direction.
"Dang I-t, D-don't wake, me up!" he yelled.
"I'm sorry..." Emily whimpered.
"Who's this?! You're b-bringing boys... home too!" He shouted.
James stood In front of Emily protectively, as they watched her dad pick up a broken beer bottle. He ambled towards them, but then crashed in to the wall. He had fallen asleep. The beer bottle slipped from his grasp and hit the ground, shattering all over the place. James grabbed her arm and moved her out of the way just in time before a shard of glass could hit her. He lifted her over his shoulder, and carried her upstairs to her room. When they got there he threw her on to her bed.
"We need to get out of here." he said sternly with his arms crossed.
"No. I already told you, I'm not leaving." Emily argued
"Why? It's not safe here!"
"I can't just leave. This is my home. It's not that easy." Emily snapped back.
"Dang it Emily! Stop being selfish!"
"How am I being selfish? You're the one that wants me to leave my hometown out of the blue!"
"Because it doesn't matter what you think! This isn't a question, it's an order!"
"You can't just boss me around like that!"
"Stop being stubborn! You know what Emily? I wish I never volunteered to be your guardian angel. You deserve this. All of it..." James retorted coldly.
Emily's bottom lip started to quiver, and her eyes started to burn. She could feel her tears escaping her eyes.

"Fine." Emily said and ran down stairs and out the door to the one place she could let herself go. James looked startled. His eyes widened when he remembered what he said.
Stop being stubborn! You know what Emily? I wish I never volunteered to be your guardian angel. You deserve this. All of it. The memory replayed over and over again like a tape. The tone of his voice. Her betrayed expression. He had gone too far.
"Crap." he muttered under his breath. He dashed out of the house. He knew where she was going. That place would be Midsummer Common Grounds. It's where she went when her mom passed.
By the time he arrived at the park, Emily was already burled up in a small ball at the foot of the tree. She was shivering and he could hear her sniffles.
"Em... I'm really sorry. I-it just slipped out. You know it isn't true. I'm so sorry." He said, his voice a whisper. Emily didn't say anything, she just continued to cry. James sighed an pulled her into a hug. Then she let it out. She sobbed into his shirt. James comforted her by rubbing her back.
It was now night and the two of them were stargazing. Everything was much more calm now. Until it started raining. It came out of nowhere. One minute everything had been dead still, the next it sounded like hundreds of feet were stomping, and they were completely drenched.
"What do we do?" Emily shouted, as the rain was that loud.
"I have an idea!" James shouted back. He picked Emily up and turned them both invisible. Then he let out his wings, something he hadn't done in a while. Then he stated to hover foot by foot, slowly above the ground.
"What are you doing!" Emily shouted.
"Flying, what does it look like?" He shouted back.
"That's not safe!"
"Neither is walking in the pouring rain at night!"
Emily puffed her cheeks, knowing that she'd lost the argument. Slowly they arose, 15 feet, 30 feet, and then 50 feet.
"Don't look down." James said.
Emily looked down. As soon as she saw the great height she was that, she squirmed and wiggled around in James arms. She wrapped her arms around his back and nuzzled her head into his torso.
"Don't let go of me..." Emily said.
"Don't worry, I'd never let go." He said and continued to fly. Emily peeked her head out from James torso and gaped in awe at the sight. She'd known Cambridge was gorgeous, but from above? It was... indescribable.
"Hey, have you ever been on an airplane?" James asked her.
"No. Why?" she answered.
"No reason."
Emily shivered and sneezed. James picked up his pace, knowing that if he didn't, she'd get sick.
After 5 more minutes, they'd finally arrived at her house. James flew in through the window and stopped flying, but Emily didn't move. He set her down on her bed, but she had somehow fallen asleep. James smiled softly.
"Goodnight, Em." he whispered before kissing her forehead.
Emily's eyes fluttered open. Her first instinct was to check her alarm clock. That was a big mistake. Something you don't want to do right when you wake up is panic. Sadly, that's just what Emily did.
"It's 8:00 and I have to be at school by 7:20! Why didn't you wake me up?" Emily exclaimed.

"I may be your guardian angel, but I'm not an alarm clock." She huffed in annoyance at his retort and got ready as fast as she could.
The two of them were now jogging down the road.
"Here, eat this waffle! It's magical and will transport you where ever you want!" he said and handed it to Emily. Emily looked at him skeptically and bit into it but nothing happened.
"Y-you fell for it!" he said between fits of laughter. Emily punched him lightly in the arm.
When they finally got to school, James turned Emily and himself invisible so the teacher wouldn't notice. When they'd sat down in the back, James turned them visible again.
"Oh, Emily, James! I'm sorry I didn't see you earlier!" their teacher, Mrs. Zoe exclaimed. Emily had been quiet surprised that she was married due to her energetic and loud personality. The guy's name was Erwin, or something like that.
"Okay class, today we'll be starting our replicas of the human heart. Get into groups of two and come to me when you're done grouping." Mrs. Zoe explained. Emily and James instantly grouped and they walked up to Mrs. Zoe.
"Oh, of course you two are partners! You two never separate, do you now?" Mrs. Zoe chuckled. Emily winced a bit at how loud she was, but nodded and took the papers nonetheless.
After lots of planning and hot glue (That's a story for another day) biology was finally over. After a few other dull classes, they made it to lunch with Sam and Amanda. And boy were they thankful for it.
"Where were you guys? You were supposed to meet us." Amanda asked.
"Oh! I'm sorry! I completely forgot, gomenasai." Emily said
"Huh? What does gomenasai mean?" Amanda asked. Sam chuckled.
"It means 'sorry' in Japanese. When we were little, Emily learned Japanese so no one knew what we were saying since no one else but my parents and I spoke Japanese before Emily learned it." Sam explained.
"Oh, that makes sense." Amanda said.
They continued to have a casual conversation until two large figures appeared from behind them.
"Look here, it's Sam and her girlfriend." One of them taunted. Emily gave them a death glare. The other picked up Sam. She struggled in his grasp, but to no avail she was helpless. The first one punched Amanda in the cheek where a bruise now laid.
"Why are you doing this!" Sam yelled and screamed. Emily could feel her anger bubbling up inside of her. The bullies didn't say anything, they only snickered at the two girl's pain. This made Emily feel like a volcano about to burst. That's when she snapped.
Emily didn't know where the surge of energy and strength came from. Maybe she was imagining it. Maybe it came because of her anger that the same two guys, Casey and Jeff, taunted and bullied them all the time. No one had ever bothered to stop it. It seemed as if no one had cared, but Emily did. She had never been strong enough until that second, and she wasn't going to waste it.
There was pure anger in her eyes as she walked over to Casey, the one who was currently holding Sam by her shirt collar, and squeezed his wrist tight enough for him to let go of Sam. She then proceeded to give him a jab punch in the stomach, and a hook punch to his jaw. When her fist impacted with his jaw, there was a sickening crack and some blood flew too. When he was hunched over, she grabbed his shoulders and kneed him in the stomach. He finally collapsed in pain.
Then Emily walked over to the other guy, Jeff. He tried to put his hands in front of his face, but he was too late. Emily gave him an uppercut and then a middle reverse round house kick, making Casey not the only one on the ground.

"Emily, stop!" James yelled. For the first time Emily noticed the uncomfortable stinging in her back. She turned around to see if Casey or Jeff had somehow nicked her in the back, but they were both lying on the ground. Emily furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. She looked at herself in her phone's camera to see if she had any injuries that she couldn't see. Surprisingly, her eyes had a slight maroon tint. She squinted at herself in the camera wondering if she was seeing things, but low and behold, it was true.
Confused, frustrated, and not wanting to get in trouble, Emily and James decided to fly to the Michaelhouse Café. The waitress had looked at them funny, but sat them at a table anyways. James noticed Emily's eye color and looked alarmed.
"E-Emily... your eyes..." James trailed off.
"You noticed it too?" Emily asked.
"Yeah, I mean it's kind of obvious when someone's eyes suddenly change colors." he pointed out.
"Wait, I thought it was only a little bit! What color are they" She exclaimed.
"They're completely burgundy. What were they like before?"
"Normal with flecks of maroon. I thought I was just seeing things though."
"I- argh!" Emily yelled in pain. She felt a warm liquid trickle down her back. She gently touched her back, wincing when she did. When she looked at her hand there was red. It was blood. James was surprised and shocked.
A sharp pain shot straight through her back.
"I can't take this anymore!" Emily yelled and ran out the door. She continued to run and run until she collapsed on the ground. She could feel her back splitting. She continued to cry out in pain when she heard someone laughing. The voice seemed to be right in front of her. Emily gulped and looked up.

In front of her was a girl who looked to be around nineteen. She had choppy, long, ombre grey grey hair, a skull tattoo, and red ribbon stitched into her arms. She had light grey wings that were slightly tattered.
"Look at you, you're so weak and so trapped. I'm your bad side. The side that's trapping you." The girl said. She walked over to Emily and lifted her chin, forcing her to meet the girl's gaze.
"Let me introduce myself. I'm Assyria. I'm a fallen angel. I'm also your bad side." Assyria explained.
"Emily! Are you-" James started but stopped when he saw Assyria.
"You. Let her go." He said coldly.
"Ha ha! Someone wants to play hero don't you, James." Assyria taunted.
"But sadly, you can't."She said and waved her hand. Chains cuffed James to the ground.
"Your going to pay for this!" He gritted through his teeth.
"Oh really, and who's going to stop me?" She continued to taunt.
"I will." Emily said. Wings of her own sprouted through her back and a navy blue twin swords appeared in her hands. Her eyes ere wine red now, her tone and gaze unemotional.
"Oh? Well then this should be fun." Assyria said while giggling.
"Emily, don't! You're only fighting yourself!" James yelled.
Assyria pulled out a red sword of her own. They glared and ran at each other at the same time. They had identical movements, clashing and chinking noises were all that was heard. Flashes of red, blue, and gray were all over the place. The atmosphere was intense. The battle finally ended when both of them made the same sword motion, slicing into each other's chests. They collided off each other, tumbling into the ground.

"Emily!" James shouted. Tears started streaming down his face. Emily's face was one of agony.
"N-no... why? WHY her?!" James yelled.
Assyria's wings had started to deteriorate. Her face was paler than usual. She had one last sly grin before fading, leaving only 2 feathers behind. James's cuffs broke off and he ran to Emily. He shook her shoulders.
"E-Em? Come on, y-you have to be awake. You c-can't!" he said between sobs.
Emily's eyes opened slightly. She brought her and up to his face. James opened his eyes, happy, but unsure.
"You're awake! C-come on, we can bring you to the hospital! Y-you'll be alright!" he said, but he sounded unsure.
"James... let go. You know it's time."
"But I can't lose you."
"You won't, remember? When I die, I'll be with you. We can be guardian angels together, side-by-side."
"O-oh yeah." his face softened and he faintly smiled.
"Side-by-side..."
He then laid next to her and grabbed her hand.
"So this is it, huh? Never thought It would end this way... but as long as I'm with you." he said.
"Hey James?"
"Yeah?"
"I love you."
"I love you too, Em."

Those were their last words, side-by-side. Together. The only thing left was two different wings, intertwined into a heart
I love you.
