It was a few days after the ball, that Mariam found the courage to go to a pharmacy and buy herself a pregnancy test. She was terrified to say the least. Of course she wanted more kids, at least one more, but not right now. They were happy with just themselves and Zahaan who was turning one next month.
Mariam was quite excited for her baby's first birthday and she was going to make it the best first birthday.
She had asked Zeyad if she could throw a themed party for Zahaan and was very happy when Zeyad had told her, "Darling, of course, he is your son, this is your house and all the money I make is for you two. Do whatever you want. Make it as grand as you like it. Our boy is turning one!"
Mariam had squealed, excitedly and wrapped herself around Zeyad in a big hug, making them both stumble, but her husband's strong arms had steadied them. "Thank you!"
"Anything for you, baby" Zeyad winked, kissing her lips and then left for work. That happened earlier this morning and she was all alone now.
Zahaan was at the park with Stacy and Lucy was in the kitchen, making lunch even though Mariam had offered, the kind old lady had refused any help.
This is the perfect opportunity to go and get the test, thought Mariam
So, Mariam quickly changed into some jeans and a nice top along with her favourite Gucci boots and left their room. She then went to the kitchen to tell Lucy she was going out and slipped on her coat.
As soon as she stepped out ofthe house, she stopped when she realized that her car was out but not the driver. She then realized that Max was with Zeyad and she had forgotten to ask for him. Great.
Mariam took out her phone from her bag and dialed her husband's Secretary, knowing Zeyad was in a meeting today.
"Z industrials, Mr. Zeyad Ali's office, how can I help you," Spoke the professional voice of Andrew, the Secretary.
"Um, hi Andrew, Mariam here"
"Oh, good morning, Mrs. Ali. What can I do for you," the young man asked politely.
"Is um, is Zeyad, I mean is Mr. Ali still in the meeting? If he's busy I can call back later." Mariam stuttered, nervous as always.
"No, Mrs. Ali, Mr. Ali is just getting out of the conference hall. Besides, I have strict orders to inform him whenever you call. Even if he is doing some serious business deals."
"Oh," Was all Mariam could say as blushed, a smile forming on her plump lips.
"He's here, I'll forward the call right away," Andrew informed Mariam as soon as he saw his boss enter his office, right next to his desk.
"Thank you, Andrew."
"You're welcome, Mrs. Ali. Have a nice day!"
"You, too. Bye" Just as soon as Mariam bid goodbye, she heard the familiar strong voice of her husband.
"Mariam" He rasped out, his voice confident as always.
"Hi," Mariam blushed even though he couldn't see her.
"Is everything okay? You hardly ever ring me during my meetings."
"I know, and yes everything is fine. I just wanted to know if I could have your car? I wanted to buy . . . somethings from the store."
Mariam told him hesitantly. She wasn't ready just yet to tell him that she may or may not be pregnant. She didn't want to get his hopes up.
"Of course, Darling. Do you even have to ask? He'll be there in twenty."
"Okay, thank you." Mariam whispered.
"You're welcome, love. Have fun shopping, just don't get me bankrupt, yeah?" Zeyad teased.
"I don't even spend that much!" She exclaimed.
"I know, I know. Spend as much as you want, baby. It's all yours anyways. Alright now, I gotta go. I'll see you at home tonight. "
"Okay, I'll see you. Allah Hafiz."
"Allah Hafiz"

Not long after, Max arrived in Zeyad's silver BMW to pick Mariam up. And as soon as Mariam settled in, she asked Max to take her to the nearest pharmacy to which he gave her a side glance through the rearview mirror.
Mariam had a strong urge to explain herself, but stopped reminding herself that she need not. She wasn't answerable to him.
The ride was tensed, as Mariam kept fidgeting with her handbag.
On arriving, she dashed out of the car and hastily entered the pharmacy, heading straight for the aisles where they kept the tests.
There were more than twenty brands of pregnancy tests, each claiming to be better. Mariam was confused, for she obviously had never needed to take one before. There was the digital one, the manual one and whatnot.
'Which one should I take?' She whispered to herself.
After ten minutes straight of going through each brand, Mariam finally selected the most popular brand and took two of it along with other things that she needed. Some diapers for Zahaan, and candies for herself.

When Mariam reached home, Zahaan was already taking his afternoon nap, while Lucy and Stacy were in the kitchen talking and having cookies.
Mariam didn't waste anytime in reaching their room where she dumped her bag and coat along with the plastic bag. She took out the tests and practically ran into the huge washroom, adrenaline high in her blood.
After peeing on the stick, she put it near the counter and paced the washroom as she waited 3 minutes. Those three minutes that felt like three lifetimes as her anxiety grew.
As soon as the timer went off Mariam picked up stick and looked at it.

She then picked the second stick.
Negative.
Mariam released a breath she didn't even know she was holding. She held the counter as she felt a sudden wave of dizziness wash over her, the adrenaline leaving her system.
Negative.
She wasn't pregnant.
That was a relief.
Zahaan is too young.
It's alright.
Mariam kept repeating those words over and over in her mind, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't stop the few tears from rolling down her cheeks. Because deep down inside she knew. She knew, that no matter what she told herself and Zeyad, a part of her wanted to have a little something in there. In her womb.
It took her a few minutes to gain her strength back, although she still felt tired and dumped the tests in the bin next to the wash basin, washed her hands and face and left the washroom.
Leaving her bedroom she went straight to Zahaan's room to find her baby boy, sleeping soundly, looking like the angel that he was.
Mariam bent down to pick him up from the crib and held him close.
Taking in his baby smell of powder and baby shampoo as she sniffed his hair.
Zahaan's small hands found Mariam's top and clutched it in his small fists as he slept peacefully in his mother's arms.
Holding her son in her arms, Mariam went back to her room and went straight to bed, placing Zahaan on her tummy as she rubbed his back soothingly. Kissing his hands every few minutes.
So what if she wasn't having a baby yet. She still had her son, her little angel whom she loved to no end.
They'll try when they're ready, when Zahaan was a little older. Untill then, she had her baby boy to coddle with love and spoil.
Mariam had no idea when she fell asleep or when Lucy and Stacy both went back to their own homes.
She woke up to the sound of doorbell ringing and found Zahaan wide awake next to her on the bed, playing with her hair. He'd started rolling and crawling, and must have rolled off of her tummy on the bed when he woke up. Mariam was glad he had not crawled farther or he would've hurt himself falling from the bed.
She then checked her phone for the time, it was 6 in the evening. Zeyad would be home in an hour and she had to prepare dinner.
The doorbell rang again and Mariam hurried down the stairs, though careful of the baby latched on to her side.
"That must be your daddy, Zahaan." She cooed at her son. "He must have left early tonight."
But she was wrong.
Mariam stood still as soon as she opened the door and saw who was out there.
Stading in the crisp cold air of late November, looking hagard and tired was none other than her ex fiance, Rehan.
