her cruel resemblance

When a person finds love, a magical string tugs them to their destined soulmate. And when they finally meet, Cupid shows up and seals them together by shooting his arrow on them. And their journey to togetherness began... Rachel closed the book angrily. She lay down on her bed and stared at her ceiling.

"Those things don't even exist," she mumbled. Rachel opens her drawer to pick up her gray diary.

"Red string of fate. Soulmates. Cupid. Cupid's arrow. Journey to togetherness. These are just fairy tales; they are not true. If the characters in the books I read do fall in love, what about me? I never felt love before. Am I worth loving? I don't even know what it feels to be in love!" she wrote.

She peeks at the window. The sky outside turned dark purple, and the source of light are the street posts. She sees couples holding hands. Rachel grimaced. Even a pair of girls and a pair of boys are kissing each other.

"You'll just break up soon," she said bitterly.

~

As the groom lifts the veil of his bride, Cupid shows up and hits them both as they kissed. Everybody clapped, as if God himself blessed this lucky couple. The angel saw their string glowing a beautiful, golden light-these two are destined for each other. The married couple walked down the aisle, and everyone who witnessed celebrated. Another job well done for this matchmaker.

The sun went down on Earth; it's time for Cupid to go back to his quarters and update his daily tally of the couples he made.

He ticked the box with the names of the male employer, and the boy who was looking for a job using the green marker labeled with "development stage". He also ticked the box with the same marker on the names of the two girls he saw at the snack stand. Finally for the married couple, he ticked it with yellow which is labeled "destiny".

Cupid smiled. He's about to go to bed when he heard a knock on the door. The door opened to Hermes the messenger, telling him that the gods want to see him. He followed.

But the messenger took him to Venus, his mother. Cupid looked at Hermes, nervously.

"I... thought that the gods wanted to see me?" he asked. "Where are the other-"

"Ask your mother, Cupid." Hermes shut the door behind him.

The god looked hesitant. His lips are quivering. He's shaking on where he stands.

"Where have you been, my child?" The goddess' voice echoed all over the hall. "Why are you late?"

"Can we stop repeating things again and again? My ears are bleeding!" he complained. "I was out matchmaking, like usual. I mean I don't have to do it once every 14th of February, the mortals need-"

"We have just one task for you," Venus declared. Cupid listened as his mother told him to come close.

"You see that woman over there? She's the most loveless woman on Earth, and we want you to make her fall in love using your arrows. You have twenty-four hours." And so, Venus sent Cupid down on Earth.

But as Cupid being put down on the ground, he looked up the heavens to look for his mother to complain, but to no avail. He sighed. As soon as he turned his back, the angel was at the room of the girl that Venus told him about. Curled up in her bed, sleeping soundly.

Cupid readied his bow and arrow; he is ready to shoot. Then he paused for a while.

"Are you sure, mother? Do you all want me to hit her with my arrows? She seems so ordinary," he whispered. He sat on the corner and waited for sunrise.

The powerful being that he is, stayed awake to see the woman waking up from the bed, rubbing her eyes. She yawned and went straight to the door without taking a glance at Cupid. He followed her to where Rachel was going, and it led him to their dining table.

He watches the girl eat. Cupid was behind her, he walked around the table to look at her. He says to her, "Greetings, Rachel."

"Who are you?" she asked.

"Why, it's your mother, silly!" Rachel's mother came towards her, kissing her forehead. "Who have you been talking to right now?" the woman asked.

"Him." The girl pointed at Cupid, making the mother look at him. "Who's him? I don't see anybody."

The invisible soul saw the girl mumble something, but from the far distance between him and the table, he could clearly hear her whisper, "No one else can see him."

"You should stop watching horror movies, young lady," Rachel's mother reprimanded. "Finish your food, quickly. You're going to be late for school." She left, leaving them behind. Rachel looked at Cupid as she eats.

"Who are you?" Rachel asked, putting down her now empty bowl.

Cupid pulled a chair behind him, resting his hand on his chin. "You already know who I am, don't you?"

He pulled out one of his arrows from inside his jacket. "You should be familiar with me, I'm Cupid." He winked at her. Rachel responded with a straight face.

"Sorry, but I don't believe in Cupid." She went up from her seat. "Think of a better disguise, man. You're not cool if you're a hired killer, and your boss tells you to hide under a goofy identity!" she complained and walked back upstairs.

Cupid laughed. "What's she talking about, hired killer? Disguise?" he questioned. "I remembered..."

He froze in his place. Cupid frowned as he clutched the collar of his jacket, hiding one of his arrows. He closed his eyes and sighed.

"...Ava."

"I don't like you, Eros..."

That's the very phrase Eros heard before the gods from Heaven took him. They assigned him as a matchmaker and changed his name to Cupid. He thought about Ava's rejection so much, he went back to Earth to shoot her his first arrow.

Ava finally fell in love and married Ronan the builder, the first man she locked eyes with. With Cupid's arrows, people all over the world with strings connecting started falling in love. When they passed, they come back to Heaven as one whole being.

Perhaps shooting her with this arrow would make Rachel fall in love. But will an arrow like this work currently? Cupid flies to where his target is now, at her university.

"Rachel broke another couple!" one student gossiped.

"She's such an antagonistic bitch!" another student commented, angrily. "She will never get a boyfriend, if she continues doing this."

Cupid borrowed a female student's body to hear what they talk about. He heard a schoolgirl say, "Good thing we don't have a love life, because if we do then she'll be there just to ruin it!"

"How long has she been doing it?" The girls turn to this girl, controlled by the god.

"Good, Amy! You're awake. She's been doing it..." The student placed her hand on her chin to think. "...since birth! You still don't get it, do you?"

He fled away from the group of girls to look for his target. He turned to see the clique laughing. He finds himself at the huge field. A boy went towards her, giving her flowers to which Rachel refused.

"Back to being cold on this Earth, huh my Ava?" He clutched his bow tightly and stretched his arrow, but like last time... he froze.

"I can't stop thinking about you."

He flew back to the heavens to try to clear his mind off Ava. Cupid went straight to his quarters, bringing out his regular arrow. He went to his closet to get his extra-strength love potion and poured it on his pink mixing pot to soak his regular arrow for 30 minutes.

Cupid wandered all over the heavens to wait. His mother saw him. The goddess gave him a sour look.

"I thought I told you to shoot her with your arrow?" Venus raised her eyebrow to Cupid. "You know that my potions and love magic will never work on her!"

"I can't do it. She reminds me so much of her," he confessed.

"Of whom?"

Cupid sighed. "Ava, my first love on Earth when I was a mortal."

"Then stop thinking about her," the goddess suggested. "You will never do your task precisely, if you dwell on the past too much!" Venus brought Cupid down to Earth again.

The gates to the heavens closed when Cupid tried to call the goddess. He left his arrow soaking. He had twelve hours left.

He had no choice but to do the task without the help of his arrow. If he doesn't make Rachel fall in love, he'll be stuck on Earth forever, as a mortal.

Borrowing Harold, the basketball player's body, he spent time with Rachel at the amusement park. After going to the exciting rides. Cupid learned from Rachel that she isn't the menacing couple hater her schoolmates said they were. She told him that she's a reserved person, at least that's what he heard from her.

"You can go to my house and stay for the night," Harold himself offered to Rachel. She nodded.

Cupid fled to follow the two to a studio type apartment. He possessed Harold again when he heard Rachel talk.

"I don't think I'll ever love someone who I just met. Its unfair that he likes me, and I don't like him at all, we're just strangers. Maybe I'll give it some more time, but not now." Rachel looked up to Cupid.

"You're just like her," he stated.

"No, I'm not! I'm nothing like your ex," Rachel chuckled. "But there's something you should know, Harold."

Cupid rested his hand on his chin and looked at the night sky through the balcony. He turned his head and found Rachel, eyes closed, leaning on her chair. He carried her like a bride, to Harold's bed. He had Harold lie down beside her as he got out of his body.

He aimed his emergency arrow towards Rachel. "I hope I won't mess up this time," he said. "Forget the past; you're not Ava, you're not..."

He heard the ringing bell of the grandfather clock mounted on the wall. It's twelve o'clock. His twenty-four hours on Earth are over. He fell on the ground.

Cupid has lost his ability to fly and is now feeling his chest pounding, his body feeling heavy, his skin was rough, and his face drenched in sweat.

He found himself being shooed by Harold. Cupid, now human saw that Rachel slapped him across his face and walked away saying these words:

"I'm sorry, but I don't like you, Harold. Forget about me." This made Cupid's human eyes grow comically large.

Next thing he knew, the police were called and sent the human Cupid to jail. He prayed to the heavens, he asked them if they'll give him another chance. But the gods said:

"Today, Heaven has lost its matchmaker. Venus ceased into existence. Only love shall be obtained by birth of the mortals. In this Earth, dragged into hate." This made Cupid cry.

The officers told Cupid, bearing a new identity, to come with them. They took him to the interrogation room. He saw a familiar face wearing the investigator's uniform.

"Rachel..." the prisoner mentioned.

"Please don't state my name as if we're friends. What's your name?"

He stared at her for a long time before he could say his new name, his identity on Earth.

"I am Amor..."
