Chapter Three - New Emotion
"You don't need to hide from me." The Prince said with a small chuckle. Lilli's heart was racing. Spotting her mask on the bench right by the Prince she stepped forward. The Prince looked down at the mask and picked it up. "So this is the mask that the princess decides to hide behind." He said smiling.
"Please return my mask." She said softly. He looked up, Lilli was reaching her hand out, face turned. She heard shuffling but then she heard a snap.
"No." He stated. Lilli turned fully. Removing her hands from her face she looked into his golden eyes. She glanced at his hands which held her mask. Broken in two. She gasped.
"How dare you damage the property of the princess of this country." She said confidently. Her heart was like a butterfly and her mind was a whirlpool.
He smirked. "How can you prove that?" He asked. His voice sent shivers down her spine. The moon had moved out from its hideout behind the clouds. It's light seemed to make Lilli glow as it cascaded along her pale skin. Also makeing the scar from her temple to the middle of her cheek visible.
He must of noticed the mark among her skin for his eyes widened. The wind blew strands of Lilli's hair in her face, but she was quick to remove them.
Lilliana wanted control of the situation so she set her face into a glare. Hoping her nerves wouldn't get the best of her she spoke. "Now do you see why I wore the mask?" She asked gravely. Her voice was strong and for once, she felt powerful. Standing tall she balled her hands into fists.
She almost had a silent victory, until the Prince took a few steps and was now in front of her. Lilliana's mind was screaming at her to back away, but she stood her ground. He was only a few inches taller than her but with how close he was she would have to look up. She tore her gaze from his eyes and looked at the daisies dancing in the wind. She wanted to dance with them, to feel free but she knew she couldn't.
The Princess' s hair floated on to her left cheek, shielding the scar from the prince's view. "No. I don't see why you would hide your face." The Prince spoke softly. He took a step back to the Princess's relief. She finally looked at him, but he was looking at the mask that was now broken in two. Lilli started forward and stopped in front of him.
"Now how am I to get back in the castle?" She asked annoyingly.
"Well, Princess-"
"Just call me Lilliana." She cut him off. The Prince froze. He gave a small smile.
"Well, Lilliana, when I came out here there was no guards by the door." He stated.
"But they'll be there now." She voiced.
The two were silent for a bit. The wind blew through the cherry blossom trees and the moonlight lit up the small clearing.
"There's a back door that leads into the Great Room. We could go in through there without being seen." Lilliana said after thinking.
"Fine. But what about the hallways? It's not like we can just walk without getting noticed." He said sarcastically.
"Well I could but you broke my mask." She muttered through gritted teeth. The Prince picked up his head.
"What?"
"Nothing." She muttered. "Lets go." She quickly grabbed her broken mask and walked away. She heard his footsteps behind her, but they remained silent. After walking for some bit she stopped. "Here." She pulled aside some overhanging vines and found the doorknob. She knelt down and picked up a smooth rock. Under it, layed a key. She snatched the key and unlocked the door, then stored the key back under the rock. Quietly she opened the door with a click. The two entered into the dark room. "Careful where you walk." She said. It was easy for her to see in the dark, much easier than other people.
"I would. But I can't see anything." He whispered back. Lilli didn't want anything ruined, for all the stuff in the room was the set up for the royal visit.
Lilli cursed herself for what she did next. "Take my hand. I can guide you." She felt his warm hand slip into her delicate grasp. She pulled him along until they reached the door. Setting her ear on the door she listened. Nothing.
"It's clear. We can go. It's a straight way to the staircases. We are on the first floor so we'll have to be quick." She whispered to him. She hadn't realized she was still holding his hand until he had pulled his hand away from her grasp. She shifted her mask in her hand for a better hold and slowly opened the door. They stepped into the empty hallway. "Now we hurry." She said before dashing off down the hallway. At every corner she stopped and looked. In no time they were on the second floor.
"Wait." Lilli said as she looked around the corner. Talking to an advisor was her father. She sucked in a breath and pulled her head back.
"What?" The Prince asked worriedly.
"My father is just around the corner." She whispered quickly.
"Your father!?" He asked surprised. Lilli' s head was down the whole time, so as to hide her face. "Can't we just pass?" He asked.
"No. My father's back is to us, therefore the advisor could see us."
"So. Can't you just ask him to shush. He'll know it's you."
"No he won't. No one knows what I look like. They haven't for five years." She whispers harshly.
He kept his mouth shut.
Lilli heard them stop talking and looked around the corner. They were both walking away, their backs to the two young royals. She sighed and started walking away, angrily. She heard quick footsteps behind her.
"Lilliana forgive me. I didn't know." He said once they reached the staircase. She ignored him.
"Lilli I didn't-"
"Don't call me that." She harshly voiced to him. "We wouldn't be in this mess if it weren't for you." She stated. He was startled. She was truly angry. "I've tried to stay concealed for five years. Then all of a sudden you come in and decide to violate my personal property." She was at the top of the stairs when she finished. She kept her head down, letting her hair create a curtain for her face. She crossed her arms and turned to him, head down.
"Goodnight." Was all she said before turning and walking away. The guards by her room were surprised to see her slouched, head down, and nearly stomping. She passed by them and into her room, closing her door rather roughly. I will never like him. She told herself.
Slipping into a silver nightgown she slipped into her soft bed. Mentally, she was still angry. She wasn't used to this emotion. It filled her with hatred and therefore, never liked it. But this 'Prince' brought it out. She signed angrily and sat up. She groaned and rubbed her eyes. Stepping out of bed she went into her bathroom. She looked at herself in the mirror. But mostly studied her scar. She ran her fingers along the red mark. Every time she looked at the mark it reminded her of her place in this family. She was the runt. She was an accessory. She was an accident, according to her mother. She was never meant to live. She even tried to have a miscarriage. Lilliana glanced one last time before returning to her bed. Tomorrow is a new day. She thought before closing her eyes, and letting darkness take over.
Which Prince did Lilli meet? Do you think she will ever befriend this prince?
