Chapter One - The Masked Princess

10 years later

Lilliana layed on the ground, staring up at her ceiling. As a gift for her seventeenth birthday her father, King Herald, had a professional artist paint daisies on her ceiling. They created swirls and looked like they were blowing in the wind. She loved it. It reminded her of her seventh birthday. It was the last time her father and her spent time together. She never blamed him. It was never his fault. So she lied there, alone. Her balcony doors were opened, and the cool breeze touched her skin, as if begging her to come out. She breathed in the air of Diamontry. The kingdom she knew she wouldn't inherit. Her brother, Prince Marcus, was the heir to the throne. She was just an accessory to the family. At least, that's what her mother would say. Along with the countless times she called Lilliana ugly and unworthy. A knock came at the door that jolted Lilliana from her thoughts. Rising quickly she grabbed her mask, the only thing that covered her 'ugly' appearance. Smoothing her dress and matted hair she opened the door. A maid curtsied to her, then spoke.

"Princess. My apologies for disturbing you but your father has asked for your presence in his office." Lilliana was stunned. Her father never had summoned her.

"Oh! Uh, ok. Should I change?" Lilliana looked down at her rumpled creme dress. It only went down to her knees but it was light and didn't puff out. It brought out her pale skin and blonde hair. And her simple mask covered her smooth face but let her silver eyes shine.

"No no. He just said to come like you are." The maid replied. Lilliana nodded and followed the girl to her father's study.

They reached the study and the maid excused herself. Lilliana couldn't lie. She was nervous. She nodded to the guard who was guarding the office. With ease he let her in. She stepped in and the door clicked behind her, causing the King to look up from his work. He eyed her then set his papers down and removed his glasses.

"Dear Lilliana, I'm so glad you came." She hated it when he was formal with her but ever since her seventh birthday that was all he was with her. Lilliana stood awkwardly in the small room. Her brother's desk was to the left of her and it to had papers stacked high. She turned her attention back to her father.

"Is everything alright father? Why did you call for me?" She blurted. She bit her lip in embarrassment. He chuckled and responded.

"Everything is alright Lilli. But we have visiting royals from Aronous. Their kingdom is larger than ours so we will be working out a treaty with them." He explained.

Lilli became puzzled. Usually if there were visiting royals her brother, Marcus, would deal with them. "So why does this have to do with me?" She asked.

"You will be planning the ball for their welcoming. Here's a list of what you need for the preparations." He held his hand out with a paper in hand. Lilli nervously put her hand out. Grabbing the paper from her father she read it over. There wasn't much but it was still a big deal.

"Now you'll need an advisor to help you out. Anyone in mind?" The king asked as he went back to reading the papers in front of him. Lilli already knew who she wanted to help her.

"Ana. My maid. Can she help out?" Lilli spoke quietly.

"Sure. That'll do. Now run along. They are coming in two days time." He said without looking at her. Lilliana started for the door but the sound of her father's words stopped her.

"Oh and Lilliana?" She turned back around to face her father. He looked up from his paper. "Happy birthday. I had a vase of daisies sent to your room. Maybe you can make a chain." He said with a smile. Lilli smiled but it was covered up by her mask. Quickly walking over she hugged her father. He touched her hands lightly then released her. Lilli excused herself so she could start planning. Walking briskly back to her room, barefoot, she opened the door quickly, making Ana jump.

"Ana look!" Lilli exclaimed happily. She held out the paper her father had given her and Ana read it. Her eyes opened wide and she glanced at her.

"No way!" Ana said happily. Lilli nodded and gently took her mask off. She only trusted Ana without her mask. She smiled big and bright and continued.

"Yes it's true! And I need an advisor to help so. I choose you!" She said gleefully. Ana covered her mouth and her eyes glistened. She nodded and brought Lilliana into a hug.

"Well we better get started." Ana said. Lilli looked down at the list to see what she needed.

Colors: Cremes, whites, yellows, golds

Flowers: no lilacs or red roses

Foods: pig, rare fruits, simple vegetables

Lilli just started with those three. She would deal with the rest tomorrow. Even though it was her birthday she worked hard still. This would be the time where she would show just worthy she was of this family. This had to be perfect.

It had to be.
