XCIV
I try as hard as possible to avoid confrontation with Adalie.
But she's quite hard to avoid forever.
She corners me after school leaving math class.
"Lover's spat?" A boy jeers as he passes us.
She doesn't even flinch.
"Die in a hole," she responds.
Then she turns back to me.
"You've been ignoring me," she says once the hall is empty.
I say nothing.
"Can we talk?" She tries again.
I stare at the floor.
"I have homework to do," I say as I push past her and walk down the hall.
"Maddie!" She yells after me, and I think I hear a hint of a sob in her voice.
I don't look back.
