Chapter 2

We were interrupted by the arrival of the realtor, a rotund, sweaty man with a florid face and a pencil moustache. I stood to greet him as he appeared at the back of the middle bungalow. "Mr Cavill? I'm Jed Stenovitch. I have the keys and some paperwork for you. I shook his hand, resisting the urge to wipe mine afterwards, as his had been soaked in perspiration. The two ladies seated on loungers smiled sweetly at him.

"Hi Jed, glad you brought us a pretty one this time," Doc teased, "although there'll never be anyone more handsome than you."

Jed turned even more purple. "Yyyes, wwwell," he stuttered, "lllet me show you to your villa Mr Cavill and get you settled in." He turned away abruptly and walked towards the middle bungalow.

"Bye hunny," Janine called out behind him.

"Bye ladies," he called out without turning round.

"He's shy," explained Doc, grinning at me.

I said my goodbyes and strode over to my new place. Jed was fumbling in his briefcase for the keys, eventually pulling them out with a flourish. "Those girls...." he began, "always in skimpy bikinis, they forget I'm a red-blooded man and a professional who wouldn't get involved with a client."

I wanted to laugh, but kept a straight face as I followed him into the house. Those girls were clearly minxes, winding him up. I couldn't wait to meet the rest of them that evening.

The house was perfect. A large, airy living room opened up to the beach out the back. Off the lounge was a well equipped kitchen and utility. Everything was finished in beachy, pale pastel shades, with cream tiles underfoot. Across the central hallway were the bedrooms, four altogether, each with a bathroom attached. I didn't need all the space, but my fixer had chosen it for location as opposed to size. "You're staying here alone?" Jed asked, probably wondering why I'd rented a four bed place.

I nodded. "I told my PA to book something on the beach. I guess she couldn't find a one bed at short notice."

He grunted his disapproval. The house hadn't been cheap, but within half an hour of getting to San Vinco, I knew I was gonna have a great holiday. A few empty rooms wouldn't change that. I checked out the master bedroom, which continued the cool, pale theme. A large bed sat in the centre of the far wall, looking straight out through the French windows and out to sea.

I stared at the view for a moment, letting the sense of calm wash over me. My life had descended into chaos of late. I'd had a couple of failed relationships and was hunted by the paparazzi wherever I went. That aside, I was never alone. I was always surrounded by the people who carefully crafted the 'Henry Cavill' image. As a team, they were great and I knew they did their best to present me in the best possible light at all times, but it meant I was constantly being groomed, guided and watched.

Jed coughed loudly, shaking me out of my reverie. "Shall we get the paperwork done so you can unpack and settle in?" He asked. He had a file of papers under his arm.

"Sure," I said, following him back out of the bedroom and into the living room. He opened the file on the dining table and spread out the papers.

It only took fifteen minutes or so to go through them and sign everything. I'd already paid in advance for the entire two months to secure the booking. Jed wished me a happy vacation before leaving in a cloud of B.O.

I unpacked my case, hanging everything up carefully in the pale oak wardrobes, musing that it had been a long time since I'd had to do that kind of job for myself. It felt grounding, normal and a world away from the madness of LA, where I had fixers to cater to my every whim.

I'd just unpacked the last of my things when there was a knock at the door. I opened it to find a grocery delivery, organised by my PA. It hadn't occurred to me that I had no food in, I was so far removed from the realities of every day life at that point. The man carried it all through to the kitchen and dumped all the bags on the floor while I fished out my wallet for a tip.

It took another twenty minutes to unpack and put everything away. It felt strange doing normal chores again, and I contemplated having to go shopping when this lot ran out. In a way, it was quite exciting. Lauren, my PA, had supplied me with all the items she knew I liked, as she did at home, so there was never an opportunity to try different things. It was just another example of how much people knew about me, even down to the brand of cola I liked to drink.

Once the kitchen was straight, I changed into a pair of board shorts and stepped out onto the beach. The sand was hot between my toes, so I ran down to the shore, where the wet sand was cooler. I paused momentarily to soak up the warmth of the afternoon sun and the scent of the ocean, before striding out into the waves for a swim. As the cool water washed over me, I felt freer than I had in years, away from the microscope of Hollywood, with its incessant demands and myriad 'rules'. I'd traded my freedom and anonymity for a massive paycheck, a choice I didn't regret, but it was fantastic to break free, if only for two months to relax and recharge.

As I walked back to the house, I saw the girls in their backyard, preparing the barbecue. "Hey Henry, how you settling in?" Janine called out as she lay steaks on the grill. "This'll be ready in about twenty."

"I'll just grab a quick shower and I'll be over," I told her, glancing over at the others. It was quite simply a sea of gorgeousness. One in particular stood out, with cafe au lait skin and a sheet of glossy brunette hair that hung down her back like an ebony waterfall. She was one of those exotic beauties you expected to wear a hibiscus behind her ear. She was wearing tiny denim shorts and a tank, revealing a curvaceous body and a tiny waist. Quite simply, she took my breath away.
