Chapter Two

After walking through the hoards of people, constantly whispering apologies to everyone she bumped into, Pisces arrived at a road with carriages lined up on the street. Pisces remembered that this was a very old and isolated town, the people here had conserved their history very well.

With some more awkward exchanges of words, Pisces got into one of the carriages and the driver took off to town. They had to cross through the town and get to the other side. Gram's home was a little ways out of the town, on one of the hills surrounding the town. The town rested in the dip between several hills, and beyond the hills was a tall forest. Pisces had never gone too close to the forest, and she was lucky enough if she got to go play in the back yard. The most she'd seen of it was when she looked at it through the window of her bedroom.

The feeling of glass against her forehead gave her a sense of nostalgia. She closed her eyes and reminisced of those hot summer nights when she would try to cool down by pressing her face against her window. Pisces drifted into a light sleep, the rough path made the carriage rumble, oddly helping her into her slumber.

Pisces flew forward onto the seat across from her as the carriage came to a sudden halt. She grabbed her bag and slipped her arms through the straps. The door was pulled open and a hand was held out for her.

"Apologies for the sudden stop, hope you didn't hurt yourself." The driver said as he helped her down.
"Oh no, that's fine." She reassured.

Pisces rubbed her eyes. She thanked and paid the driver, watching him turn the carriage around and drive back down towards the town. The path hadn't been paved over, so the wheels of the carriage left a cloud of dirt and dust behind as it left.

Pisces turned around to face a large mansion, worn down from years of neglect. It towered over her, four stories high and structured in the shape of a T when seen from above. Pisces honestly didn't know how to feel about it, it was bigger than she'd recalled. How was she, a farm girl, supposed to handle a place like this?

Pisces realised she was only going to get more dehydrated if she stayed out under the heat of the sun much longer, and began to walk towards the large iron gates. She gripped on of the iron rods that made up the gates, seeing that the large padlock on the gates had not been locked. Pisces pulled the heavy gates open with difficulty, just far enough for herself to squeeze through. A heavy screech could be heard as she did so, and again when pushed the gates closed. The hinges would need oiling, later.

Slowly stepping up to the entrance, made entirely of marble aside from a wooden set of double-doors, she dug through her backpack for the ring of keys her grandmother had also sent for her. She picked out the second largest key, the largest being for the gates. However, when she went to unlock the main doors, she did not here a click when she turned the key. The key turned quite smoothly, meaning the door was already unlocked. Pisces wondered if someone could have broken in before she got there, but why would anyone bother to make the journey all the way here from the town?

Pisces pursed her lips and pushed the door open with a creak.
