prologue

Happy Hogan was not the ray of sunshine his name often misled people to believe he was. His generally unhappy disposition was actually Tony Stark's favorite flavor of Irony. A tall, brooding man who could easily punch someone's lights out all while having the nickname of 'Happy'? How could Tony not hire such a man to be a part of his security detail?

Sure, other criteria for Happy Hogan had been researched thoroughly, but Tony Stark always knew that Happy was the guy he wanted to hire. Inevitably, Happy Hogan wasn't just Tony's bodyguard-turned-chauffeur, but also one of the billionaire's most trusted allies and loyal confidante. Currently, Happy Hogan was also in charge of delivering the background check they'd done on one Spiderboy --or some name to that effect-- hoping to recruit the up-and-rising crimefighter in the impending fight Tony felt coming on with one Steve Rogers.

Of course Tony didn't want to fight his fellow Avenger, but he wanted to be prepared if it came down to it. So, expectantly, he swiveled around in his chair when he heard Happy announce that they had identified the spiderling of New York City.

Knowing that Tony didn't like being handed things, Happy instead flicked upwards on the screen of his device, making the electronic profile of their new recruit a 3-D hologram so that Tony could see all he was about to say. Tapping a few more things, a video of the red-clad spider-being played for them both to watch. An analysis was run before Tony's eyes before then taking them to the picture of one of Midtown School of Science and Technology's finest, probably.

"Meet Peter Parker," Happy started in his usual sunny - meaning not so- tone. "After doing extensive research and running many, many tests, we can confidently conclude that the Spiderman is this kid."

"Spiderman? It says this kid is fifteen. Seems more like a Spiderboy," Tony remarked absently. Murmuring something else to himself, Tony's eyes continued to scan the profile that had been created for the young Peter Parker. "Academic Decathlon, Chess Club, Band," Tony continued to read aloud. "You sure this is the right kid?"

"Absolutely," Happy nodded. Then, under Tony's expectant gaze, he faltered slightly. "Mostly."

"Alright, I trust your 'extensive research',"  Tony decided. Squinting, he motioned for Happy to scroll some more, which the man then did. "Any hints as to how Peter Parker became this super kid. Technology? Scientific mishap? A little bit of both?"

"I generally try not to think too much about that part," Happy admitted honestly. "Gives me headaches."

"Fair point," Tony shrugged. "What about the background check? Anything pop up?"

Happy took the holographic picture of Peter Parker's School ID (which Tony was amusing himself by zooming in on) down as he temporarily took the device back. Clicking on the screen a few times, he eventually put it back in Tony's review. This time, dozens of other reports filed under a multitude of different names were shown. Happy picked out the one he needed most in this moment to show Tony.

"Nothing popped up on our friend Pater other than as a result of a series of unfortunate events, he lives with his last-living relative, his Aunt May Parker," Happy explained. "However, we did background checks on all of the students he has any relations with in his classes and clubs. You know, just to be safe. One kid ended up sticking out: Oliver Jensen."

"Jensen. Is it me or is that familiar?" Tony murmured, the smallest of frowns etched across his lips. Finally taking the device, he looked at the written report on Peter Parker's peer (whom Peter knew from Chess Club, a fact Tony tucked away for a future sarcastic remark).

"It's familiar because we know this kid's father." Happy answered. He pointed to a grainy picture of a man in a white lab coat. It was immediately evident to Tony that the picture had been taken a while ago. Happy continued,  "Or, at least, we knew of his father, Doctor Lars Jensen. We did some research on him when we were looking for Baron-"

"-Strucker," Tony cut in, his mind quickly putting pieces together. "Right. The good doctor here was a known associate of Strucker's back in the day. I didn't know our favorite rogue Norwegian scientist had a kid, though."

"Neither did he, as far as I could tell," Happy responded. Reaching out, he highlighted the death date of Lars Jensen and then the birthdate of his son. "Doctor Jensen died roughly six months prior to his son's birth. On top of that, two months before his death, his wife, the lovely Dorothea Jensen, seemingly left him and moved here to New York."

"Aw," Tony muttered in mock-sympathy. "The poor evil scientist."

"Something like that," Happy retorted. "Whatever you want to call it, it was enough to keep their son unknown to us first. She cut all ties to their life in Norway, including her husband and his extracurricular activities."

Both Happy and Tony knew that Lars Jensen's extracurricular activities consisted of the mutations of other humans, which is why neither of them bothered mentioning it.

"So, what are you telling me here?" Tony asked finally. "Are there any habits of his father that Oliver Jensen has picked up and make him a person of interest? Do we think he could be someone dangerous?"

"If he's anything like his father, probably," Happy nodded. "But, as far as his school records go to show, there is nothing to suggest that he is."

"If all we have to judge him on are the sins of his father, I can say I only think it's fair that we, well, don't do that," Tony decided rather assertively. The thought of his own father snuck into the corners of his mind. They always found a way to break in. "Plus, what are the chances he and Peter Parker are even really friends? Just because they're in Chess Club together doesn't mean he knows about Peter's extracurricular activities. Hell, this kid might be lucky enough to not even know about his father's twisted past."

"Maybe that's why his mom got him away and changed her entire life," Happy agreed. "So we're not worrying about him?"

Tony sat forward in his chair. His hand swiped through the air to get out of Oliver Jensen's profile and back into Peter Parker's. More internet videos of New York's finest crime fighter resurfaced.

"Innocent until proven guilty. Or a danger to Peter. Whichever comes first," Tony eventually answered.

Exiting out of the poorly filmed phone video's people haphazardly tried to take of Spiderman, Tony instead decided to scroll through everything they had on the fifteen-year-old Queen's native.

"So do we have an address for the Parker Residence? I think I want to pay our spider-pal a visit. Oh, wow, that's his Aunt? Yeah, we're going."
