7. Break-In
'Shady' didn't even begin to describe how Aiden felt about camp.
Sunshine Camp was suspicious as hell. There simply wasn't any other way to put it. It wasn't that Aiden didn't like camp, in fact he did actually enjoy it sometimes. Sometimes. He gave it a solid 5/10 rating, mostly because he didn't have to make homework while he was there. But that wasn't his problem. Aiden looked up and growled softly when the person he wanted to see the least looked in his direction. Him.
There he was, standing in front of the group, teaching them something about camp related things. Aiden would've known what it was that he was explaining if he actually paid attention for once in his life.
"And that concludes my explanation on why you should never try to fight a wolf." Romeo concluded. "Are there any questions?"
Stacy immediately raised her hand. "Yes, what if you want to tame it?"
"You should never try to tame a wolf without adult supervision. It might get hostile and start to attack you." Romeo answered while rubbing his chin. Then he suddenly glanced over at Aiden. "And we wouldn't want that, now would we?"
It were such glances that sent shivers down Aidens spine, and one of the many reasons why he didn't trust Romeo. There just was something about him that gave off this mysterious vibe. Maybe it was just Aidens imagination, or maybe the fact that he has never seen him blink before. Whatever it was, Aiden was going to find out.
As if he read his mind, Gill asked: "You think he's hiding something?"
Aiden looked at him. "Uh, yeah!" he answered dryly. "He's too mysterious to not be hiding something. And I'm gonna find out."
"Sounds like trouble, I'm in." Gill said shrugging. "But how are we going to do that?"
Aiden scoffed impressively. "Don't worry, I've got a plan."
"Is it a good one?"
"...Yeah."
Maya partly overheard the discussion and asked: "Are you guys up to something? I can make a distraction for you." She flipped her hair a little and put her hands on her hips.
"Yeah, cool. Just make it quick, we don't have all day." Aiden ordered. Maya nodded and quickly took something out of her pocket. It was a bobby pin. "You might need this." She said before handing it to Aiden. After that she vanished into the crowd of students. When she got Romeo's attention she started asking him a bunch of questions, giving the guys enough time to sneak away unnoticed. And so they did.
Aiden quietly closed the door behind him and made his way over to the counselors cabin with Gill. They stopped at a rustic door with a sign on it that said "Staff only". Aiden bent the bobby pin a little and put it in the door lock, and after fidgeting with it for what felt like an eternity, it opened.
"Alright camp freaks, let's find out what you're hiding." Aiden said to himself before stepping inside. The room was very plain and even a little empty. There were two desks with lots of papers and other junk on it, a houseplant in one of the corners of the room, an antique wooden closet, and an big, old carpet on the floor. There was also an other door, which Aiden assumed led to the bedroom. Aiden walked over to one of the desks for a closer look. "So what exactly are we looking for?" Gill asked.
"Just anything that proves the fact that they're hiding something crazy." Aiden clarified. "I'll look through this room, you go check the bedroom." Gill nodded before opening the bedroom door and eventually closing it again when he was inside.
There were many papers scattered across the desk, but it was nothing of interest to Aiden. When he opened the top drawer his eyes were immediately drawn to a notebook with the words "My Darkest Secrets" scribbled on the front. "This has to be Romeo's" Aiden thought. "Damn, this was just too easy." He opened it and read the first page out loud. "June 3rd. I told Xara I lost her pen, but I found it later in my pocket. I'm so ashamed. No one must know." Aiden internally cringed at the story. "Man, he's boring." The rest of the book was filled with similar "secrets". Aiden closed the notebook and put it back in it's place. The desk was filled with more paperwork and notes, but again, nothing interesting. "Guess this isn't going to be easy after all."
After looking through the entire room and finding nothing useful for potentially suing the heck out of those counselors, Aiden decided to check the bedroom. In there, there were two beds with a window and a bedside table in between. There was another carpet on the floor and a croakboard hanging on the wall with some sticky notes and one singular picture. Gill was examining it.
"Hey Gill, whatcha looking at?" Aiden asked, stepping up next to him. Gill put his hands in his pockets and shrugged. "Eh, nothing special. Just some boring notes and an old picture."
Aiden nodded, giving the picture a closer look. Xara and Romeo were in the photo, along with some other man. His body shape was oval-ish and overall more masculine than the others, and he also looked a little older than them. But they all had one thing in common; they were all wearing similar camp t-shirts, the only difference being the color.
"Woah, who is that guy?" Gill asked, but he didn't get a solid answer.
"They all look so happy in the picture, they were definitely good friends." Aiden mumbled to himself, rubbing his chin. "And he's wearing a camp shirt. Maybe he was a counselor, too?"
Gill glanced over at Aiden. "Well if he was a counselor, where's he at now?"
Now it was Aidens turn to shrug. "I don't know. Maybe there's something in this room that will help us find out."
"Well I already checked the nightstand, but there was nothing in there. I even looked under the carpet for a secret trap door, like in the movies you know? But again, nothing." Gill explained.
"Did you check under the beds?" Aiden asked.
"Uh.. sure! Definitely!" Gill assured just a little too believable. "But let's check again just in case I missed something." Aiden knew that he was lying, but he wasn't complaining. He was glad that Gill was helping him out with this mystery in the first place. Aiden hated to admit it, but Gill was actually one of his closest friends. Some might even say they were best friends, but Aiden preferred not to use that term.
"I don't see anything under here." Gill remarked while looking under one of the beds. "Oh wait, here's a piece of paper."
"Sweet! What does it say?" Aiden barely finished his sentence when he heard the sound of a door opening, followed by distant voices. And that could only mean one thing.
"Shit!" Aiden softly yelled. He desperately looked around the room for any way to escape, when his eyes landed on the window. He rushed over to it and opened it. "Let's go!" he gestured to Gill before carefully but quickly stepping into the window and escaping through it. After Gill did the same they ran away as fast as they could without looking back.
