Chapter 8 - Jonathan

"Thanks for breakfast Joyce."

"It's no trouble." She smiled as she handed Hopper a cup of coffee. "I always enjoy our little 'sleepovers'."

"Me too." He smirked and gave her a kiss on the cheek.

"Ew." They turned around as Will and Jonathan walked in. "Get a room."

"Preferably not the one next to mine." Jonathan poured himself a cup of coffee. "You guys were kinda loud last night."

Joyce started blushing profusely. "I... we... I mean..."

Will started laughing, "No explanations needed mom. It's okay."

Joyce sighed and took a seat at the table. "You boys just love embarrassing me, don't you?"

"Yep." Jonathan took a sip of his coffee. "Will, can you pass the milk?"

He handed him the bottle before looking over at his mom. "Do you have work today?"

She shook her head. "No, I took the day off. The gutters aren't working, so Hopper and I are going to clean them."

"I'm so excited..." you could practically cut the sarcasm with a knife.

She lightly punched his arm, "It'll be lots of fun."

Hopper laughed, "Joyce, you have a mixed-up sense of 'fun'."

She rolled her eyes and looked back to Will and Jonathan. "What do you boys have planned for today?"

"I'm going to hang out with the guys," Will answered. "The arcade finally fixed the Pac Man machine, so we're going to try to beat the high score."

"You boys have fun." She turned to Jonathan. "What are you doing today?"

"I have a big project due for my photography class on Monday, so I'll be out taking pictures." He answered.

She nodded, "Sounds good. Well, it's gutter time. Let's go."

Hopper groaned, "Do I have to? Today's my day off too you know?"

"If you help me with the gutters, you may get a reward later tonight." She gave him a wink.

He chuckled, "I do like rewards..."

The two boys rolled their eyes as they walked outside.

Hopper had been going at the gutters for about three hours now. An hour earlier Joyce got a phone call and had yet to return. Hopper could hear her gossiping with Mrs. Wheeler from outside. His reward better be worth all the manual labor he was doing.

He heard a car pulling up in the driveway, he turned to see that Jonathan was finally home. Hopper got down off the ladder to greet him. However, Jonathan didn't seem to be in the mood.

"I don't want to talk about it." He announced gruffly as he slammed the door of his car. Jonathan was covered in cuts and bruises and he was holding a demolished camera.

"What happened?" hopper asked with concern.

"I said I didn't want to talk about it." He started to storm off towards the house.

Hopper stopped, "Hold up there. You're not getting out of this that easy. What happened?"

Jonathan sighed. "Tommy Hagan. Ever since he stopped hanging out with Steve, he's made his own group. They saw me taking pictures in the park and attacked me. It's nothing I'm not used to. Normally they don't break my camera though..." he looked down at his prized possession forlornly.

"What about your project?" Hopper asked.

Jonathan shook his head, "I don't know..."

"Alright. We're going to fix this." Jonathan looked at him confused. "First things first, let me grab a first aid kit. Stay out here, your mom is going to freak out when she sees you but we need to do some stuff first."

Jonathan wasn't sure what was going on, but Hopper ran inside to get some supplies. When he came back, he started smearing some anti-bacteria cream on Jonathan's injuries. "Ow! That stings!"

"Sorry. Two more seconds..." He finished applying the medicine and placed bandages on top. "Alright, all done. Now, get in the truck."

Jonathan did as he was told, "Where are we going?"

He started the engine, "We're getting you a new camera."

Once at the hardware store, Hopper let Jonathan pick out a new camera. After that, Hopper drove him around town so he could take his pictures, Jonathan was in shock through the whole experience. By the time they finally got home, Jonathan wasn't quite sure what to say.

"I... thank you..." He looked up at Hopper. "No one has ever done anything like this for me before.

Hopper smiled, "It's the least I could do. Now come on, your mom's probably wondering where I ran off to." The two walked back into the house.
