Chapter 1 - Lucas

(A/N – Quick note, any time I talk about Eleven in this story, I will either call her Eleven or El. I just don't really like calling her Jane but that's just me. This takes place between seasons 2 and 3. Thanks!)

It was a normal day in Hawkins Indiana. A normal, dull, and extremely boring day. At least, for Chief of Police Jim Hopper. Now, Hopper is not one to wish trouble upon his town, just so he has something to do. However, he would not mind a phone call about a missing garden gnome right about now.

Hopper was currently sitting at his desk with absolutely nothing to do. Now that all this Upside Down and The Gate craziness was over, his life had, for the most part, gone back to normal. Sure, he was now taking care of a girl that had superpowers. And he was now dating a woman whose son had essentially come back to life. But all of that is beside the point. The point is, none of that stuff was happening now, so Hopper was bored.

After his tenth game of solitaire, Hopper had had enough. He grabbed his hat and walked out the door of his office.

"Where you headed Chief?" he looked over and saw Powell and Callaghan playing cards.

"I'm uh... going to run by the creak. The rainy season is coming up and I want to make sure that nothing's blocking the entrance and will cause it to flood." He answered quickly.

"Ok." Callaghan stood up. "We'll come with you."

"No!" He said too quickly. "Uh... I mean. It looks like you are both doing... important work here so... stay put." They both looked at each other confused as he left the room.

When he got in his truck, Hopper had no intention of visiting the creak. Instead, he thought he would just drive around for a couple hours before returning to the station.

Hopper was driving down Cornwallis Street when he noticed something out of the ordinary. He slowed down his truck and rolled down the window. "Hey, kid! You okay?"

On the side of the street, was none other than Lucas Sinclair. He was walking his bike along the road. He had a busted lip and a few other cuts and bruises. "Huh? Oh. Yeah, I'm fine..."

"What happened?" Hopper stopped the truck and turned off the engine.

Lucas looked down. "It's nothing. I just hit a pothole and fell off my bike. Nothing to worry about."

Hopper eyed him suspiciously. He wasn't buying it. "Hop in the care, I can drive you home."

"Really?" his eyes widened.

"Sure, thing kid." He nodded. "Just throw the bike in the back."

Lucas did as he was told and quickly got into the passenger seat. Hopper waited for him to put on his seat belt before driving off.

"So what street were you on when you crashed?" Hopper asked nonchalantly.

"Oh uh..." he looked out the window. "Kerley..."

"Kerley huh..." Hopper nodded to himself. "Now that's mighty strange..."

Lucas looked over at him. "What... what do you mean?"

"Well," Hopper continued. "Just a couple weeks ago, the city had Kerley repaved. Not a single pothole in sight. You did say you hit a pothole, right? Or would you like to change your story?" Lucas looked down at his lap. "The jig is up kid. So why don't you tell me what really happened?"

Lucas sighed, "It was just some kids from my school. Troy and James. I was riding down Kerley when they jumped me. They were calling me stuff like 'Doctor Midnight' and other things like that. Before they left, James pushed me, and I fell off my bike. We were near a ditch, so I went sliding down. That's how I got scraped up."

"Those two are idiots." Hopper had to keep himself from exploding with rage. "I'll see to it that they get what's coming to them..."

"No!" Lucas said quickly. "If you do that, it'll just make it worse."

Hopper sighed, "Look kid, if you keep letting them get away with stuff like this, they're never going to stop. They're going to keep picking on you, keep picking on your friends, and later in life they'll pick on other people too. But, if they start getting punished, then they won't want to do this kind of stuff anymore. It might be bad for a little while, but I promise I can help make it better."
"Really?" Lucas looked at him hopefully. Hopper nodded. "Thanks, Chief!"

A few minutes later, they stopped in front of the Sinclair residence. Lucas got his bike out of the back and quickly ran inside. Hopper was smiling as he drove away. As soon as he got back to the station, he would be making a couple phone calls to some parents...
