The First Day
The soft buzzing of a phone woke the girl lying on the bed. She groaned before turning and hitting her head on the popcorned wall beside her. She jumped, and quickly found herself sitting upright. Rubbing her head she grabbed the phone that woke her. Notifications coated the screen. The one that stood out was the ten miss calls. It took her a moment to unlock her phone, being half awake. Calling her voicemail she waited.
“Uh Katie, this is your mother. I am coming down to give you your medicine you forgot it. Sorry, you are probably in class.”
“End of first message, to listen again press one, to add to favorite press five, to delete press seven. Second message.”
“Katie I'm here, are you here? Uh, please answer as soon as you can.”
“End of second message. To-”
“Thanks automatic voice, I know seven to delete.” Katie growled as she dialed her mom’s number.
“Hello,” her mom's voice questioned.
“Hi mom, uh yeah uh… are you still here? I can take my medicine now. Uh, where are you?” Katie stuttered. She had missed her first day of school.
“I'm outside your room, talking with your roommates, are they called that?” she hung up instantly and ran out of her room. Her mother sat on a couch talking to three men. Keith, Hunk and Lance, Katie only knew Lance though.
“Hey mom. How have you been?” She asked as she sat on the floor.
“I was well, then I heard you missed classes.” Her voice was cold. She slowly nodded tense.
“Well in my defence, I didn't wake up till now…” she murmured looking at her mom.
“You slept the whole day!? Was it because of your medicine?” Her mom asked. She sighed.
“Mom, you have my medicine. If anything, it is because I don't have it.” She quoted looking at her hands.
“Mom! Why are you here!?” Matt joined the conversation running in to hug his mother. The conversation lasted longer than Katie wanted, and was repetitive, not to mention boring. Katie stood and stretched.
“I'm going to go to my teachers and apologize.” Katie mumbled to the room that no longer knew she was there. She walked into her room to quickly change. Then grabbed the keys as she left.

The walk was boring and short, I lived on campus with the others. Why they didn’t wake me, I shall never understand, but it is fine. Proof the medicine helps. The antidepressants, the melatonin, the allergy prescription. All three of them.
“Katie! It is hard to catch up when you speed walk away, Are you really going to talk to the teachers?” I slowly turned and looked at the boy who chased after me. He had dark hair in a long mess, did he ever brush it? And his eyes are a dark purple, almost black.
“Uh, no. I should, but I won't.” I paused thinking about the inventory of the kitchen. I had a midnight snack, everyone had brought food, but with how many people we have it wouldn't be enough. “Quick question. Uh, can you ask one other person we share the kitchen with to drive to the store? We are going to need help.” I asked and turned towards Matt’s car. I had his keys, so two cars should be enough.
“Uh, okay but who?”
“Not my brother, we are taking his car.” I exclaimed as I started the engine. “Fair warning, the car is old, and I have been driving for a year and a half.”
“A year and a half? So you started driving when you were sixteen and a half?” The boy questioned rubbing his temples. I chuckled.
“No, I am seventeen. I have been driving since I was fifteen and a half. I was bumped up a year.” I hummed. I love boasting about being bumped up a year. “What is your name, I'm Katie, and you know that.”
“Oh, sorry. I'm Keith.” Keith responded as he got out of the car. “Why are we at the store?”
“We have no food compared to how many people we have. Who did you call?” I inquired.
“Oh, my roommate, I only have his number, as of late. Tonight is rules night too.” Keith exclaimed. I gave a soft nod and walked towards the building.
“Who is your roommate?” I questioned trying to remember everyone. Keith gave a small chuckle.
“Uh, Takashi Shirogane, but everyone calls him Shiro.” Keith remarked.
The soft hum of the air conditioning was the only sound in the store. Some places you could hear the music, or other people, but everything was quiet. The fluorescent lights hurting my eyes, as the light bounces off the white walls, and shelves. We stood by the can aisle waiting for Shiro. When the taller man joined the group, he was accompanied by another girl.
“Hey Keith, why are we here?” Shiro inquired. Keith looked towards me then the other girl.
“Well, Katie wanted to go grocery shopping, she said call someone. Since we took her brother’s car he couldn't come.” As Keith finished his words I gasped.
“I’m an idiot!” I grunted looking towards the can ailse. I make my way down the aisle and find soups, and baking batter. I grab a box of brownies and spice cake.
“Why cake and brownies? How can you be an idiot?” A soft voice inquired I turned towards the voice. A pretty girl stood there, she came with Shiro. Her dark skin contrasting her long wavy white hair, her blue eyes holding her concerns. She wore a simple pale blue summer dress with pink flowers and white flats.
“Uh I want cake, and brownies, so both instead of choosing. I could've taken my car, but I took my brother's.” I replied and watched as she grabbed frosting. “I am Katie, what is your name? And where did the boys go?” I added looking towards the end of the ailse.
“They went to grab a cart. I am Allura, it is nice to make your acquaintance.” She chimed. I nodded and waited for the boys to come. We were silent for most of the wait.
