A small turn

I sat in the small room waiting for Allura to come back inside the room. Once she finally entered, she slumped against the door, sliding down crying. The black mascara running down her face. I hesitantly took a step towards her.

“Allura are you okay?” I asked squatting down beside her. She looked at me.

“It is nothing, I am just stressed. Thankfully tomorrow is Saturday right?” She chuckled forcing a smile. I frowned towards her.

“I want to help, how can I?” I mumbled, her eyes looked away before meeting mine once again.

“You can't.” She whispered before standing. “We will continue tomorrow, yes?” she asked standing and putting everything away. I nodded and started to leave her room. I aimlessly wandered towards rooftop looking at the lights spotting the ground around the dark city. The chill of the night air softly brushed my cheek.

“It's a little late to be out up here, isn't it?” A voice asked. I didn't recognize the voice though.

“You're here.” I nearly whispered. He gave a chuckled as he stepped closer. I turned to face him. My brother's roommate. I took a step away from the edge.

“Are you this nervous around everyone else?” He mussed. A shiver trickled down my spine. He took another small step towards me. “I won't hurt you.”

“Did you say that to my brother? Y’know before you threw him off the roof.” I growled. His eyes narrowed and he gave a small sigh. Looking away from me towards the lights on the horizon.

“I tell that to anyone and everyone I hurt. It calms them. But I guess not you.” He hissed. “Funny how so many people depend on science, yet not one care if a scientist dies. No one cares if a group of people died because one person was selfish, or forgetful. No one will remember the dead.”

“That is where you're wrong.” I growled taking another step away from the edge. “People remember you by what you did. If you died before you achieve your best, they won't remember you. Your family and friends will always remember you though, that is what matters most.” He turned towards me abruptly and I tripped trying to step away from him.

“Will anyone remember your father? Or my parents? Once we are all dead!” He growled growing closer to me. I hurriedly got off the ground and headed for the door. He threw something at my feet, as I opened the door towards the downstairs. The pain on my ankle forced me to fall down the flight of stairs. He ran down the stairs and helped me up.

“Are you okay? What happened?” He asked worry coating his features, other people started to follow his actions. Keith and Lance ran out of Lance's room which was closest. I forced myself off of John, and Lance helped me walk to my room. I could hear Keith  asking John for the truth. I glanced back towards them, John had a small smirk, and Keith was watching me.

“I hate him.” I growled. Lance sat me down on the couch in the main room where everyone had gathered. We sat in silence for a moment before Hunk spoke up.

“We have to get you to the nurse as soon as possible.” Every gave small nods agreeing with him.

“What happened?” Shay asked looking at me, then the group. I opened my mouth to speak, but John spoke first.

“Katie was walking away from the roof, she was heading downstairs when her foot slipped and she started to fall. I saw this happen and ran to her as fast as I could muster.” John lied. I glared at him, and he slightly narrowed his eyes towards me. My phone broke the silence with a loud ring. I hurriedly grab it and bring it to my ears.

“Hello?” I ask.

“Hi, is this Matt Holt’s guardian?” The voice asked.

“Uh, yes one of them.” I lied.

“Okay, so Matt has woken up, not for long times, but he is waking up. You may see him tomorrow.” The voice answered. I felt hot tears roll down my cheeks, and a smile crack across my face.

“Yes, of course, thank you.” I called into the phone. The man on the other side hung up before I put my phone away. I looked between every person I knew well in that room. “Matt woke up!” I cheered. I almost jumped to my feet and joined them in their cheers, but I remembered. Shay walked up to me and gave me a soft hug.

“That is good to hear!” She whispered. Everyone was hugging each other. Everyone except for John and his only friend in the group.

----------------------

I sat by the hospital bed cupping my brothers hand waiting for him to wake up again. Glancing at my phone again I sigh, just about to give up for the night. Slowly standing I wobbled towards the door.

"Katie?" A soft hoarse voice asked. I turned to face the white bed, instantly I regretted the decision. I limped back towards his bed. I had his hand cupped again. "What is wrong with your foot?" He asked looking down at it.

"Uh.... I fell down the stairs." I answered happy to see he was okay. I will tell him everything later. When he is better. "What do you remember?" I asked.

"Uh... Good question. Uh... And I only remember being dragged to the roof... Of and the words "goodbye old friend." Does that help?" He asked. I looked at the ground. I already knew who had done it. I wish he fully remembered though. It would have had helped a lot.

"Yes, it helps alot. Thank you." I smile. He will be safer not trusting his friends this way. He gave me a smile and I hugged him.  Letting the tears finally fall. Matt is back. He won't leave me, not yet. I will protect him if I have to.
