Chapter One
This is a novelization of my roleplay character, Kimmik. This will still make a good story, I hope. This is for all those who have encountered the helm:

Kimmik shuffled her wings and resisted the urge to yawn. The raven on her back had no such qualms, letting out an annoyed croak. The Queen looked over, shooting Kimmik an icy glare. She stiffened. "Hush Ryu," she whispered. The raven dug its talons into Kimmik's back and she winced. Luckily, the queen's attention moved back to the wolf in front of her.
"I don't need pots or other crockery," she said, voice sounding like the wind over snow, "Show me your armour, and be quick about it."
The bladesmith nodded quickly. "Of course." She reached a scarred, grey paw into the back, pulling out a chest guard. "Forged from the finest steel," she said, "Imbued with powerful magics."
"Anything else?" the queen asked testily.
"Yes! Yes, there is this beautiful set of steel claws, and here is a full set of armour, never used."
The queen looked over at Kimmik, prompting her to speak.
"Any helmets?" Kimmik asked, tapping her claws against the ice floor.
The grey wolf looked nervous. "I have one," she said, "But it is not like any other. It cannot be chosen, it must choose its bearer. But, it is masterfully created, and unequalled anywhere else. You may have heard of the helm of the Twelve Shadows?"
Kimmik sucked in a breath. The Queen spoke, "The fated helm of Wyrdham the Brave?"
"That is the one."
"Then I am most fortunate to have it in my hall. Bring the guard, they will try it and see if any are selected."
She signalled to a male wolf on the far side of the room. He bowed and picked up a long ice staff in his teeth. With a single movement, he drew it across the castle wall. A low, scratching sound came. He drew it over again. A reply came, and the doors swung open.
Kimmik's wolves marched through the door, and she raised her tail and shoved her ears forwards in dominance over them. They marched into the room in perfect synchronization, five abreast and ten deep. Kimmik allowed herself a smile. Of course it was perfect; she had drilled them herself. They all stopped and bowed their heads to their queen.
"Have each wolf in the line touch it with a nose or paw, and may the helm show its master," the Queen proclaimed.
The bladesmith hurried to comply, walking the helm past rows of wolves. Kimmik didn't pay it any attention. A wolf in the ranks was talking to the one beside it, a slight that was not tolerable. "Ryu," she called softly, "Bring me a lieutenant."
The bird squawked once and sailed down into the crowd. It landed in front of a speckled white and brown wolf, gesturing with its wings and pointing to Kimmik. The lieutenant paled. Ryu gestured towards Kimmik once more and peckd the wolf sharply with its beak. Reluctantly, the grey and white wolf stepped out of his row.
The lieutenant slunk forwards and postured itself before Kimmik. She waited.
"Capitan Kimmik," The Lieutenant began, rolling his eyes backwards, "To what do I owe this pleasure?"
"What is your name, wolf?" Kimmik barked.
"Gracyne."
"Gracyne what?"
"Gracyne, Capitan Kimmik!" Fresh fear-scent wafted towards Kimmik's nose and she wrinkled it in disgust.
"Do you know why you are here?" she asked. The wolf pressed itself further into the ground, if that was even possible. "Answer the question." Kimmik growled.
"No, Capitan Kimmik" the wolf replied in a small voice.
"Look at your wolves," Kimmik said. "Are they all in line?"
"No..."
"And are they supposed to be?"
"Yes."
"So act like the lieutenant you are supposed to be and get them in line." Kimmik odered. "Oh, and bring the perpetrators to me. Go."
The wolf jumped up as quickly as possible and ran down back to where the guards were line up. He shot a glance at Kimmik, and then began running even faster. She sighed. Training the wolves was hard, and they seemed to un-train as quickly as she turned her back. She turned to the queen.
"My lady," she said softly.
Auromora was a beautiful wolf, snow white with silver accents. Her head was shaped beautifully, narrowing to an elegant muzzle. Her fur had been trimmed around her eyes, letting their brilliant blue colour to shine through.
"Yes?" Queen Auromora replied.
"Lieutenant Gracyne. How long has he been at his post?"
The queen frowned. "I thought it was your job to keep track of military matters. Silly me." Kimmik felt her cheeks burn and she ducked her head. Her accent sharpened.
"This is important."
"Very well. Almost a year, I believe."
"It has come to my attention that he has not kept order within his ranks. Discord flourishes."
"Then demote him," the queen replied. "I have no time for this silliness. This is your job." Kimmik continued talking.
"It is not just Gracyne. Disorder has spread through all the guard. I propose a cleanse of it all. We will demote all leaders, and let the next battle show who should be in charge."
"It shall be done. I give you as many wolves and as much time as you need. Let us have a full guard again."
Kimmik nodded. By that time, the blacksmith had finished her rounds. She returned to her spot in front of the throne.
"Well?" Auromora asked.
"Nothing, my lady." The blacksmith replied. She bowed deeply.
"Have you tried everyone?" The queen asked testily.
"Yes-"
"No." Kimmik broke in. "She hasn't tried me."
The queen looked interested. She gestured for Kimmik to go forward. Kimmik leaped off the dais and walked towards the blacksmith. She placed her paw on the helmet.
A light blue glow came from the helmet, bathing Kimmik's face in light.
The blacksmith bowed. "The helm has chosen you." she said. Under her breath, she said "There is a new Shadow Dancer."
Kimmik slid the helm onto her head and stepped back.
"Give your prices to my treasurer." The queen ordered. "You will be payed. Leave us."
The doors and the far end of the hall opened, and a slender wolf flew through. It landed on the floor and bowed. Light leather armour covered it, and its fur was the same shade of brown as its coverings.
"My lady. In the woods to the south, the forest kingdom approaches. They have hundreds of soldiers my lady. They will slaughter us." The wolf said sorrowfully. Kimmik could tell from its voice that it was male.
"We will respond." Auromora replied.
Kimmik stood up straight. "You know your positions. Follow me. Now." She leaped off the dais and fell for a few heartbeats, before she snapped her wings out and flapped them. She climbed in the sky and dove down to the fore of the pack.
"To me!" she called, setting into a light jog. The forest wasn't far to run. As Kimmik moved, she heard a voice in her head.
Shadow Dancer. It called, use us, fight with us.
Kimmik shook them off. I need a clear mind for the battle, she thought.
Clear mind, and strength. The voices replied.
The scent of enemy wolves filled Kimmik's nose. She waved her tail, making the wolves stop. Carefully she climbed a large rock and peered out over the top.
"We can smell you!" she called, "Filthy tree-runners, show yourselves!" Kimmik threw back her was and howled, long and clear and savage. Her wolves joined in with her, calling for blood. The forest was silent for a moment, the sound of their call echoing an fading away.
Then, an sans wearing call came through the trees. It was many times louder than theirs. A black line of wolves advanced from the forest, stretching over the horizon. A herald stepped forward.
"You have refused our terms, and still refuse to hand over your pine forests to us."
"Only because you don't give us the strait!" A wolf replied. Kimmik let out a low growl, furious. She signalled to Ryu, and the wolf went down with the raven pecking at its eyes.
"Even so," the herald continued. "If you still refuse us, we will take it by force."
Kimmik's eyes narrowed. "You will not have anything! Wolves of Îglisk, attack!"
Kimmik's wolves surged forwards around her, and the sound of combat echoed through the trees.
