Echoes in the Dark: Part 3
Cole's P.O.V.:
We were stuck in that subway car and things were getting worse. Zane managed to get Kai's communicator working again to send out a message to Kira, but we had no idea if anyone actually heard it. The rocks that were falling on top of the car were starting to crush it. I tried to move the rocks with my powers, but it was too unstable.
"Have you gotten a hold of anyone yet?" I asked Kai.
"I sent a message, but I haven't heard anything." Kai answered. "I don't know if anyone heard it."
"Even if they do, what the chances they'll find us?" Jay frowned.
"I also managed to fix my gps beacon, but I'm not sure Pixal will be able to see it." Zane said.
"Pixal always finds a way." Kai said.
"At least this car is staying intact." Jay said as he tapped the side.
The whole car began to shake again and the roof started to cave in.
"Get down!" I shouted.
"What do we do?" Jay screamed.
"We gotta get out of here now!" Kai shouted.
"Look! There's a hatch." Zane said.
Zane ran over to the hatch and we followed him. I used my strength to move it and we all took shelter in a tiny pocket underneath the car.
"Zane please tell me they tracked your signal?" Jay asked.
"There is no way to tell. Communications are still offline." He said.
"Can this get any worse?" I said.
"Don't ask that question." Kai frowned. "Every time someone asks, "Can this get worse?" It always gets worse!"
The whole ground started to rattle again.
"And it just got worse..." Kai sighed.
"That's it. We're done. This is the end of us." Jay sobbed. "We're just going to be crushed down here and no one is ever going to find our bodies, and..."
While Jay kept going on and on about how we were going to die down here, I kept looking at the rocks. I was surrounded by the earth, in my own element. If I could use the spinjistu burst I learned from our adventure to Shintaro, maybe it would give my friends enough space for them to get out?
"...and I never got to tell Nya that I..."
"Guys, I know how to get us out of here." I said. "When I count to three, I'm going to do the spinjitsu burst. That will create a tunnel so you guys can climb out."
"The burst?" Jay frowned. "Last time it wiped you out!"
"I know, but it'll be big enough for you guys."
"Cole, there is no way you'd survive that under all this rubble." Kai said.
"Kai is correct. With your current plan there is only a 12 percent survival rate." Zane said.
"I don't care. This thing is going to collapse any second and you guys need to go and save Lloyd." I said. "Just do me a favor and tell Seliel I love her."
"We're not leaving you behind." Kai said.
"I'm sorry, but if I have a chance to save the rest of you, I'm gonna do it." I told them.
"If this is the last time we see you, it was an honor to fight with you as brothers." Kai said.
"Yeah." Jay agreed.
"Same here." Zane said.
We all put our hands in the middle and said one last goodbye. They got ready and I was preparing to do the burst. I counted to three and channeled the energy of the earth. I opened my eyes and let the earth speak to me. I was able to summon a long beam and make a tunnel for my friends. They made a run for it until they could get out.
I tried to use my strength to hold up the car, but I was so weak from the burst I passed out...
Kai's P.O.V.:
Jay, Zane and I made it through the tunnel Cole made, but near the end everything just stopped. We were stuck in a small pocket and there was a big bolder in front of us.
"We appear to be stuck." Zane said.
"We have to go back for Cole." Jay begged. "We can't leave him."
"Jay, I want to save him to, but there's nothing we can do." I frowned. "He's... gone."
Before Jay could even process that, the bolder started coming loose and we tried our best to hold it up, but we couldn't do it. It was getting heavier and heavier, but just when it was about to hit the floor, the boulder suddenly became lighter.
It lifted off of us and we looked up to Nya in her mech. It was scratched up and it looked damaged.
"Hiya boys. Need a hand?" Nya said lifting the boulder off of us.
"Nya!" Jay smiled.
Nya pulled us out of the hole and we all caught our breath. Kira, Skylor and Pixal started checking on us.
"Nya! You did it!" Jay smiled.
"That was close." I said catching my breath.
"Are you guys okay?" Kira asked.
"Wait, where's Cole?" Skylor asked.
"He had to use his spinjitsu burst to get us out of there." Zane said.
"So he's still trapped down there?" Nya said.
"We tried to tell him not to, but he wanted us to be safe." I frowned.
"The tunnel is still in tact. Maybe we can find him." Nya said.
"Skylor and I will stay with them, you two go." Kira said to Pixal and Nya.
"Let's go while this mech is still functioning." Nya said.
Pixal hopped on the shoulder of the mech and they flew down the hole. I hoped they could find Cole before it was too late.
Nya's P.O.V.:
We went through the tunnel, digging our way through what was left.
"I have detected a small heat signature coming up in 300 feet." Pixal said.
"Got it." I said.
I flew forward to right where Pixal said and started digging. I wiped away some dirt and saw a part of Cole's shirt. I found his face and wiped the dirt away so he could breathe.
"Cole! Cole! Can you hear me?" I yelled.
"His pulse is stable." Pixal said feeling his wrist.
"Let's get him out of here." I said.
I lifted Cole and put him in my arms and Pixal rode on my back. I flew back up towards the tunnel entrance as it collapsed behind me.
I released Cole from my grip and Kira and Kai set him on ground. Pixal helped me out of my mech and Jay came to check on me.
"Are you ok?" Jay asked.
"I think so." I smiled at him. "Thank you."
"I gotta say, I love the new mech!" Jay said.
"I did too, but now it's just scrap metal." I sighed.
"I'll help you fix it when this all blows over."
"Thanks, but let's focus on Cole for now." I said, looking at him unconscious.
"Oh, yeah." Jay remembered.
We ran over to see Cole passed out on the ground. Kira was holding a hot, wet rag to his chest and in a few minutes he woke up coughing up dust and dirt.
"Wha... What happened?" He looked around. He sat up and held his side. "Did everyone make it out ok?"
"We sure did buddy, we sure did." Jay smiled.
"Are you hurt?" Kai asked.
"I think those rocks did a number on me." He held his left side.
"I'll take a look." Kira said.
Cole nodded and let Kira look his ribs. She touched them and he screamed.
"Probably a few broken ribs." Kira said. "Nothing a little healing and rest can't fix."
"We need to get him back to the monastery." Kai said.
"Oh... uh... about that..." I sighed.
"What?" Kai asked.
"The monastery... it's gone." I frowned.
"Gone? What do you mean gone?" Kai said.
"It's been destroyed." Skylor said.
All of them gasped.
"How?" Kai asked.
"Who did it?" Jay asked.
"All of them. All our enemies. Asphera, Vangelis, Pythor, the Mechanic, all working together. They destroyed all of it." I frowned.
"And they took the weapons of spinjitsu." Kira said.
"What do they need those for?" Zane asked.
"I don't know, but I know who's behind it." I sighed. "Harumi."
"Harumi?" Jay questioned.
"How is that possible?" Cole asked.
"I don't know. Somehow, she's back." I said.
"What about Master Wu and Seliel?" Zane asked.
"Everyone's ok, Garmadon showed up and told us to evacuate before the rest of the council did." Kira explained.
"We're not sure who pulled me, Wu and Pixal out though." Skylor shrugged.
"Where do we go now?" Jay asked.
"Nya, come in." Master Wu's voice came over my communicator.
"I read you master Wu." I answered.
"Once you have the ninja, come to the old Samurai X cave. We will set up base and meet you there." Wu said.
"Rodger that." I said before hanging up. "Ok guys, climb aboard, quickly. I'm not sure this mech is going to last much longer."
They all climbed on my mech and I did my best to fly to the Samurai X cave. Hopefully I could make it before this thing falls apart.
Garmadon's P.O.V.:
I was asked to grab Lloyd and take him into the other room so he could see the ceremony. I went to check on him and he didn't look so good. He was sitting in the corner of the vengestone cage, not looking at anything. He seemed very weak and tired.
"Lloyd?" I walked up to him.
"What do you want?" He asked, not turning around.
"Did you get any sleep?" He asked.
He shook his head and held it in pain. I heard his stomach growling.
"Here." I slid a bowl of fruit through the bars of the cage. Lloyd just kind of stared at it, then looked at me. "What?"
"Did you steal that?" He asked.
"No, that's my breakfast. I'm just letting you have it."
"Why?"
"Because you need to eat more than just one small bowl of rice a day." I said. "Don't worry, I took the blueberries out. I know you're allergic."
"Wait, how did you know that?" He asked.
"When you were a baby, we gave you some blueberries and your whole face swelled up like a balloon. Luckily I got you to the ER in time."
"Mom never told me that story." Lloyd frowned.
"Your mom isn't the only one who took care of you." I said.
"Ok fine." He took the grapes out of the bowl and started eating them. "Thanks, I guess."
He scarfed the rest of the fruit down. It had been so long since he had any food that wasn't rice or crackers.
"Garmadon!" I heard Harumi scream.
"Lloyd, hide that." I warned him.
Lloyd hid the now empty bowl behind his back. Harumi walked in the room.
"Is everything prepared for the ceremony?" She asked me.
"As you requested." I nodded.
"Wonderful." She said. "Can you escort Lloyd there? I wanna be sure he gets a front row seat."
"It will be done." I said.
Harumi left the room and I walked over to Lloyd. He looked better after he ate, but he still seemed tired. I unlocked the door and let him out. I started to tie his hands behind his back. He could barely hold his head up.
"Why are you still listening to her?" He asked.
"I can't blow my cover yet." I said.
"But if you keep helping her, she'll succeed in resurrecting the Overlord!"
"Relax, I have a plan."
I helped him up and started walking him to the room where the ceremony was taking place. He limped almost the entire way and I could tell he was weak and tired.
Once we got to the room, I walked him into the cage and locked the door. He was exhausted and dropped to his knees. I was concerned a little, but I couldn't react. I had to keep my cover.
"Harumi, you don't have to do this." Lloyd said. "It's never too late to correct a mistake."
"It's not a mistake Lloyd, I thought about it carefully." Harumi said. "Balence is the problem, it results in strife. True peace will only be achieved when one side wins, and darkness is stronger than light."
Harumi looked around the room.
"We're ready." Harumi said. "Asphera, commence the ritual."
"I hope that plan of yours is going to work." Lloyd whispered to me.
"You'll see." I winked.
Lloyd nodded and the rest of them got ready. I then interrupted Asphera before she started talking.
"Wait!" I yelled. "Perhaps I shouldn't be in the room with the Crystal King. We don't have the... uh... best relationship."
"I couldn't agree more." Harumi said coming closer to me.
Before I knew it, she took out her dagger and stabbed me in the leg. I screamed and she shoved me in the cage with Lloyd and locked the door.
"Dad!" Lloyd ran over to me.
"Hey! We had a deal!" I said to Harumi.
"Oh please, I knew what you were doing the entire time." She said. "Interrupting my plans, talking to Lloyd alone, that little escape attempt the other day. It doesn't take it a rocket scientist to figure out that you were working with the ninja."
"You won't get away with this!" I tried to stand but my leg was hurting bad. Luckily it wasn't bleeding very much because full blooded Oni have a healing factor, but it would take a while to work.
"Dad stop, you're hurt." Lloyd said to me.
"I was wrong about you Garmadon, you're not the greatest villain that ever lived, that honor goes to the Crystal King, and now thanks to you, he'll see the light of day once again." Harumi said.
"Harumi, please let my dad go. It's me you want." Lloyd said.
"The only thing I want is for you both to witness the Crystal King's reawakening!" She said. "Asphera, continue the ritual."
"Gladly." Asphera said.
"Please tell me this was part of your plan?" Lloyd said.
"I wish, but she outsmarted me this time." I frowned. "I'm sorry son, there's nothing more I can do."
"It's ok Dad. At least you tried." He frowned and kept looking at my wound.
Asphera started chanting the magic the magic words and the weapons glowed and floated in the air and shot a diamond shaped beam into the big crystal the middle.
"Crystal King, my lord. Follow my voice. It is I, Harumi! I summon you forth! Break free of your bonds! Take form! I summon you back to your rightful place as supreme ruler of Ninjago!"
Lloyd and I braced ourselves as a giant blast filled the room. We looked at the crystal and the Overlord came out of it. He looked a lot more powerful than before, with four arms and vengestone horns. He looked Lloyd dead in the eyes and I could tell he was afraid.
"What was it you said to me the last time we fought?" The Overlord marched towards Lloyd. "Oh yes."
"O-Overlord?" His lip quivered.
"This ends now." He said to Lloyd's face.
"Lloyd? Are you ok?" I asked him.
"Th-This isn't happening." He stuttered, not taking his eyes off the Overlord. "I don't believe it."
"I have returned!" The Overlord evil laughed. "Your grandfather fought me and failed. You fought me, and also failed." He looked at me, then back at Lloyd. "You tried twice, and failed just like your forebears."
"You know what they say, third time is the charm." I taunted. "Lloyd will defeat you this time."
"You still hope? Admirable, but foolish." He said. "Watch as I crush that hope."
He took his newfound power and zapped the big crystal in the middle, causing the temple to float. All of the council members floated up in the air and were given crystal powers. They all bowed to him and thanked him.
"Come on guys, let's go see what these new powers can do." The Mechanic said.
They all ran out of there to wreck havoc on the city. The Overlord and Harumi stood guard a good distance away from us.
"Great, now we'll never get Echo to snap out of it." Lloyd frowned.
"I think we have bigger problems." I said.
"What's the point?" Lloyd sighed. "With him that powerful, we have no chance of defeating him now."
"Yes we do, because we have you."
"Me? What do you mean?"
"Your Oni form is the only thing that can take care of him once and for all." I told him. "If you can master it, you can..."
"No!" He screamed. "I thought I made it perfectly clear that the Oni form isn't going to work."
"It would work if you weren't so resistant to it." I said.
"See, there you go again. Just when I'm starting to change my opinion of you, you bring up this Oni nonsense again."
"I'm telling you that it's the Overlord's only weakness. If you don't do it, you'll be letting all of Ninjago fall to darkness."
"And if I do, I'll end up just like you." He frowned.
"What?"
"That's my greatest fear, ok? I'm scared of turning into you." He said.
"Lloyd, I don't want you to be like me." I frowned. "I want you to be better, and you can find your own way to master that form, but unless you give it a fighting chance, then there will be nothing left to fight for."
"Ok." He sighed. "But you have to keep your promise to get me out of here. Deal?"
"Deal." I said.
I kept looking at that crystal in the middle of the room. It was level with the temple, but I was thinking if it wasn't, then maybe we could cause a big enough distraction to escape.
"Lloyd, I have a plan." I said.
"Enough with your plans Dad, it's over." He sat down in the corner. "I let all of Ninjago down."
"Not yet you haven't, because I'm going to train you how to use your Oni form."
"What? Here?"
"No, not enough room." I said. "We need to get us both out of here."
"How?" He looked up at me.
"You see that Crystal?" I pointed to it.
"What about it?"
"When I count to three, get ready to break out of here."
"What? Are you crazy?!"
"Just do it!" I screamed.
"Fine, what's your plan?" Lloyd reluctantly stood up.
"Just trust me."
"Yeah right. Like that's gonna..."
Just then, I threw a pebble at the crystal and the whole room slanted forward. The cage tipped over and Lloyd and I escaped out of the bottom and started falling. We grabbed onto the cage as the temple shifted.
"This was your plan?!" Lloyd shouted.
"Well I didn't see you coming up with any ideas." I scoffed.
"Ok, point taken."
"We gotta go! Now!" I said.
Lloyd and I let go of the cage holding us to the ground. We started sliding towards the exit.
"Harumi, go after them!" I heard the Overlord scream.
Harumi started chasing Lloyd and I through the falling temple. We reached the teeth of the temple. I grabbed onto one of them and Lloyd grabbed onto my foot.
"Dad, pull me up!" Lloyd yelled.
I grabbed him with my lower arms and pulled him back onto the platform. I pulled myself onto the platform too and caught my breath.
"That was close." Lloyd caught his breath.
"There's no escape Lloyd." Harumi caught up to us and drew her sword.
"Stay back! I don't wanna hurt you." Lloyd said.
"I do!" I said, but Lloyd held me back.
"The Crystal King wants me to destroy you, but I'm giving you another chance." Harumi said. "Join us, join me."
"If you think I'd ever do that, than you don't know me at all." Lloyd said.
Lloyd looked out into the landscape and saw a river below us. He looked at me and I knew what he was thinking.
"You're crazy!" I said.
"Lloyd don't!" Harumi said. "From this height you'd never survive!"
"I actually agree with her on this one." I said. "Lloyd, are you sure about this?"
"No, but it's the only way left to go." Lloyd said.
He grabbed my arms and pulled me down with him as he jumped off the temple. We aimed for the river and landed in it. I passed out when we hit the water...
