Facing The Past

A helmet on my head, I sat in my car, revving. I looked out my side window to see Roger in a giant sombrero, cheering with Henry on his hip. Will Jenkins, my racing partner, tapped my helmet though the window.

"Go easy, Taylor. Don't push yourself." He reminded. I nodded my head and dropped down lower into my seat, ready to lurch. I knocked myself into first gear and glided slowly along the dirt track, getting a feel for being back in the car. But before long, I dragged myself around the corner and let my instincts take control. The vibrations up my legs were nearly orgasmic and I took them in my stride. Everything blurred as I hit 120 km/ph, and my heart started racing. 130, 140, 150. The second corner of the track was waving into my vision.

"Okay, Lucy. Slow down. Lucy, can you hear me?" Will transmitted through the radio. I could hardly hear him. I was buzzing.

"LUCY TURN!" He yelled as I swung around the corner at the very last second, just avoiding slamming the wall. For a moment, I had to close my eyes. I straightened up as soon as the corner was over and slammed on the brakes. I screamed in delight, which Roger seemed to interpret as fear.

Roger handed Henry over to Will and jumped the wire fence, running over to me. I watched him as time seemed to slow down.

"Luce!" He yelled, getting closer. After my car accident, every drive was met with a sliver of fear. This one seemed to unlock some kind of gate inside and everything felt okay. As Roger got to the front of the car I undid my strapping and opened my door, still barely able to breathe.

"Elle, are you okay? Talk to me, honey." He fretted, pulling me out of the car and into himself. I laughed into his chest and he let me go.

"That felt AMAZING!" I yelled, jumping up and down in laughter. His face mirrored mine with a flood of relief and adornment.

"Oh, Roger! It felt amazing! Come here!" I grabbed the collar of his shirt and kissed him hard. His body relaxed into me and pushed me against the car. I released him from the kiss and laughed like I'd just taken a hit of cocaine.

"I love you." I cackled, high on adrenaline. He put his hands on my hips as I tried to jump more.

"I'm so glad I married you." He laughed, kissing me again before telling me he would totally take me on the hood of the car if Will and Henry weren't there. I watched him walk back to the stands and got back in my car to blast any stresses out with the black smoke from my exhaust.

We returned to the house and enjoyed new years day as a trio. Roger promised that the next new year we would spend it together, just us two. He had no idea what I had planned for his birthday in July.

"Mama!" Henry called, crawling towards me without a diaper on.

"I thought dadda was changing you?" I asked, picking my half-naked son up from the kitchen floor.

"Dadda is a bit poo at nappies and should stay in music." Roger yelled, walking through the hallway into the kitchen.

"You'll get there, honey." I handed our son over just in time for him to pee on Roger's shirt. Roger frowned and squinted his eyes, cringing at the sensation. I grinned and watched it unfold.

"That's... That's nice." He whispered, turning and walking away slowly.

"At least it's laundry day!" I yelled, putting the tea towel back on the rack and following them to Henry's bedroom. Inside, Roger and Henry were on the floor, sans diaper and shirt. I stood and observed, finally letting Roger have some father-son time away from tour. The grey winter sunlight illuminated the room, making everything glow in silver water. I fantasized about what the room would look like in 5 years time. Would he have a racecar bed? Lord knows Roger would get him one. Hell, Roger would buy us one if it came in King size. Would he still like the paintings? Would the wardrobe no longer consist of cute overalls and miniature Queen shirts? Would Henry look more like me or Roger?

"Earth to mumma." Roger interrupted, watching me fall into a daze. I snapped myself away from my dreams and got down on the floor with them.

"He'll be one soon, Luce. Can you believe that? One." Roger asked. I laid on my side, supporting my head with my hand.

"I don't want my baby to grow up."

Roger crawled over to me and laid his head on my hip.

"Oh, I forgot. I'll always have a 10 stone, five foot nine baby to take care of."
"hey. I'm five foot ten, thank you." Roger grinned, taking my other hand in his and kissing it. I checked my watch and noticed I was technically running late.

"Hey, I've gotta head out for  bit. Are you okay with Guaccy for a few hours?"

"Sure. What for?" He sat up and looked at me with low eyebrows.

"It's just a thing I've gotta do for the hospital. I'll be finished by 10 easy." He nodded and I kissed him slowly.

My old family was inconvenient in every sense, especially when it came to returning. I waited at the airport, wrapped in Roger's brown sweater and a pair of jeans with sneakers. I looked like the girl who had been left here by her parents, waiting for any familiar face to pop up from the crowd. I hung my head down and ran my hands through my hair, looking very tired. I heard a ding and looked up at the electric doors, seeing the first of the travellers from Glasgow step into the room, searching for their families and loved ones. I stood to my feet, holding my keys and wallet in my hands against my chest. After a few minutes, a familiar face finally appeared and I ran to them.

"Ivory! Oh Christ!"
