~Prologue~

Warmth spread through Gon Freecss's body as he lay under the hot sun. Blades of grass tickled his bare skin, and the sun's rays rested joyously on his face. There was a second, hotter warmth near his side. Gon's eyes slowly dragged over to it and they softened slightly as he laid them on the mess of white curly hair leaning on his shoulder. Killua looked so beautiful when he was asleep. Gon held his warm comfortable body close, a large smile pulling across his tanned face.

He looked down at the sleeping boy, gently running a hair through his tousled white locks. He could stay like this all day, with his best friend in his arms. The hard ground beneath him suddenly felt uncomfortable and he got to his feet, lifting Killua's sleeping form into his arms. "Killua usually doesn't leave himself so vulnerable." He thought aloud, starting to walk down the long gravel path that lead to their getaway cabin.

He and Killua had built it themselves, after several years of construction. By Gon's 16th birthday, they'd already moved furniture in. The place wasn't anything too impressive. There were drafts, cold spots, and uneven floorboards; But it was their place, and that made it wonderful. Gon laid the sleeping boy down on the soft cotton sheets inside the dark mahogany bedframe, Closing his eyes and breathing in killua's warm scent. He always had a faint chocolate smell to his scent, and something tangy. Perhaps blood?

His mind drifted as he laid beside Killua, the warmth of his body against Gon's lulling him into a comfortable sense of security. The slow rise and fall of Killua's chest relaxed him. Gon felt himself dosing off, however something still kept him awake. A sudden chill went over him, causing him to shiver. "Ne Killua, did you feel that?" A beat of silence passed, and Gon frowned. "Killua?" He slowly opened his eyes. Gon stared down at the pile of blankets on the bed in confusion, Killua wasn't there. He slowly felt the bed, it wasn't even warm. In fact, it was ice cold.

Gon shook off his confusion, he must've indeed dozed off. He went in search of his best friend, looking all throughout the house. "Killua? Killuaaaa?" He wasn't anywhere to be found. Gon hurried outside, it was so bright. The sun beat down on him, the once soft and comfortable warmth turned harsh and unforgiving. The sun's rays suffocated him with heat, yet his feet stayed cold against the cool ground. He took a deep breath, eyes drifting shut. He searched for Killua's scent, eyes snapping open as he zeroed in on it. He darted through the thick of the forest, dodging and weaving around the trees.

"KILLUA!"

Gon called, but there was no answer. As he ran, he caught another scent. It was so heavy, and it hung in the back of his throat. The scent of blood...it was suffocating. He ran faster, his frantic footsteps thudding on the hard packed earth beneath his feet. His heart pounded as the scent only got stronger and stronger. The further he ran, the quicker his breath came. Eventually he pushed through a thicket of brambles and was met with a bright searing light.

The moment Gon's eyes adjusted to the brightness, a scream tore its way out of his throat. There was a singular tree in the middle of the clearing. On that tree hung Killua, his bloodstreaked hair hanging to cover his face. Blood dripped from Killua's neck from the yoyos that had been wrapped around it, keeping his body attached to the tree firmly. Gon felt sick to his stomach as he laid his eyes on the bloody stumps that used to be killua's legs. Torn off just above the knee, and laying several feet away from his dead body.

Gon's head felt like it was going to rip itself open. Stabbing pain pounded in his skull. He felt as if someone had just stabbed a hand into his chest, ripped his heart out, then showed it to him up close. There was a movement against the trees, and Gon's eyes snapped to a large cloaked figure slipping away into the trees. Gon could barely catch a glimpse, but he could've sworn he saw long blonde hair peeking out from under the dark hood. Gon forced his previously frozen body to move, his teeth gritted in rage. "I'll kill you" Before he could catch the bastard, darkness slammed down on his vision.

Gon's ears rang harshly. The first thing he felt was the cold hard ground beneath him, chilling him to the bone. "Open your eyes, child." A deep voice beckoned. Gon's eyes slowly opened, obeying the strange man's voice. The man was tall, very tall in fact. And he had a large bulky mask. It covered his upper chest and most of his face. He wore a suit as well, quite an odd looking man. "Where....am i...?" he whispered, voice cracking slightly. He'd screamed his throat raw back....His eyes darkened as he remembered. I'll kill him...

"Not to worry child." The man replied, folding his arms behind his back. The room Gon was currently in smelled damp, faintly of mold. He slowly got to his feet, eyes dark. He should be crying. No, he shouldn't. He should be hunting that man down, there was no time to sit and cry like a helpless child. He'd made that mistake once. Never again. "Not so fast, boy. I have something that might interest you." Gon turned his dark emotionless eyes on the man. "Get out of my way..." He didn't care who this man was. If he stood in Gon's way any longer, he'd simply have to force him to move. The man held up a hand. "What if I told you, I know how to find him?"

Gon froze, his eyes slowly meeting the man's apparent gaze. He could feel it on it, even though he couldn't see any eyes. "what..?" The masked man held a hand out towards him. "As of right now, I do not know who exactly killed the white haired boy. However, I can help you find him. Just take my hand, child." Gon's eyes narrowed, he'd never seen this man before. Why would he offer to help? And more importantly, how did he know Killua? "and why should I trust you?" Gon asked, his voice nearly as cold and dead as the lifeless body of his best friend.

"I can give you more power than you could ever imagine."

Gon took a moment to observe the man. The aura he held...it was so powerful. "All you have to do is take my hand, and allow me to bless you. I'll help you find that murder, hell I'll even let you rip apart the bastard yourself once I do. You just need to trust me.." Gon stared at the man's outstretched hand. At that moment, nothing else mattered. The image of Killua's lifeless body seared into his retinas, making his stomach turn. Gon didn't wait another moment. He took the man's cold pale hand, uttering nothing but a single word.
