Happy reading!! xx

All Hell Breaks Loose.

"Lucius?"

Blinking, I looked up from another dreary sheet of parchment and frowned at the man standing in the doorway to the throne room. Castiel was panting, his cheeks flushed as if he had been running and his dark sweaty hair clung to his head. I let the papers fall from between my nerveless fingers.

Something was wrong – I knew it with certainty.

Waving to get his attention, Castiel breathed a sigh of relief as his gaze met mine. My hands tingled with the need to call forth my angel sword into existence. It would only take a single thought, to use my will to bring the deadly weapon into existence. There had to be a great danger for Castiel to look so disorientated. He had seen the rise and fall of countless human civilizations without missing a step. He had endured true horror at the hands of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse. If he was worried now, as he had never looked before, I had many reasons to be concerned.

"What is it Castiel?" I asked, rising from the table to meet him.

The man looked between the woman still sat at the table and then back at me. I could see the question in his gaze.

"It's fine. I don't hide anything from Savannah." I assured him through I mentally crossed my fingers. No matter how much I loved the open relationship we had, there were some secrets even I was bound to keep. And there were also some secrets she really didn't need to know about like that time in fifteen ninety with the hag. No one needed to know about that – I would forget it if I could.

"Some of the security alarms have been triggered." Castiel spoke hastily, his eyes darting over his shoulder as if he expected us to be overheard.

Raising a brow, I stared down at him. "Where?"

Castiel hesitated. The uneasy sensation bubbling through my veins only intensified. I knew the answer before it escaped his lips. "Tartarus."

Glancing down at Savannah, the brunette hadn't even looked up from her papers. She was oblivious to the world around her as she worked. She blew at an errant strand of short brown hair which hung in her face before swiping his out of the way but still she did not look up. I felt my lips curling up into a smile. She's beautiful and she's mine.

"I'll be there in a moment Castiel," I murmured, my eyes never leaving my fiancée.

It still felt strange to think it – fiancée. In all of my time living among the humans, I had never felt the urge to participate in matrimony. It had always sent a shiver of fear down my spine and not in a good way either. I had been far from a gentleman before meeting Savannah. It was easy to admit that I had been a bit of a pig; I used woman after woman for my own pleasure with no thought to their feelings.

Savannah had changed me – more than even she knew. She had managed to fix something which had been broken for millennia. The thought of marrying her didn't inspire fear and terror. Instead it felt like all of the pieces were finally together – it felt right.

Stepping closer to my Bride to be, I leant down and brushed my lips across her cheek. Jumping, her brown eyes lifted from the sheets of paper at last.

"Hey," Savannah murmured, her eyes roving over my face. Though I was sure I looked like my normal dazzling self, she immediately tensed her limbs. "What's going on? What's wrong?"

Brushing my lips over her forehead, I pull away and smile. "Nothing, it's just a minor disturbance."

"Don't give me that. You forget that I know you." She retorted, folding her arms over her chest. "Don't try and protect me Lucius. It will only end up with someone getting hurt and that someone is you."

Even though I could see the anger welling within her, I leant forwards and captured her lips in a kiss. It's short but in those few seconds I felt more than I ever dreamt was possible. My entire body jerked towards hers as if struck with a live wire. The tingles were addictive and I wanted nothing more than to tangle my fingers into her hair and pull her into a heated embrace. Instead I broke the kiss and leant my forehead against hers to try and impress the intimacy of the moment into my memory.

"There's nothing to worry about. I'll be back in a few hours and then we can have dinner just the three of us; you, me, and Danny." I stated, pressing my lips to the top of her head so that I didn't have to look into her eyes as I lied to her face.

Pulling away, I kept a smile even as her gaze roamed over my features. The suspicion lingered but finally she smiled back at me. "Okay, but I get to choose where we eat this time. "

"Deal," I murmured, my thumb stroking over her cheek before I dropped my hand to the side. I had to stop touching her or I would never be able to prise myself away from her. "I've got to go, Castiel is waiting for me."

"Duty calls." She stated, nodding her head before turning her gaze to the paperwork which was laid out before her.

My heart lurched. I was so easily dismissed but then she expected me to come back. And I would if this turned out to be a false alarm. If it wasn't? Then it could be another matter entirely.

I nodded my head even though she wasn't looking my way. Duty called and I would always answer. "I'll see you later."

Meeting up with Castiel in the hallway, I led us through the maze of hallways of the palace with practiced ease, nodding my head in greeting to the staff we passed. All of them stood with their backs to the wall, their heads bowed in respect as I passed. It was strange to be back in a place where this happened daily after spending decades in the human world. I stared a little too long before shaking my head.

"Tell me what's really happening." I ordered, glancing at the man stalking before me

Castiel sighed loudly. "The alarms went off. I sent some guards down to check it out but they've gone missing. None of them have come back."

"How many are missing?" I asked, pulling my shoulders back and cracking my head side to side.

"Five."

"That's too many to be a coincidence. Someone should have reported back by now." I added though from the expression on his face Castiel was thinking the same thing.

As we reached the doors to the palace, I placed a stilling hand on Castiel's arm. He turned back to me. I hated all of the shadows lingering in his purple eyes. They used to be clear and bright but now you could see where darkness had left its painful mark.

Dropping my hand from his arm, I stuffed my hands into the pockets of trousers. My fingers immediately found the small box which lingered within and felt my heart give a strange lurch in my chest. I closed my eyes and drew in a steadying breath. It was ridiculous. She had already said yes but I still felt a cold sweat forming on my brow at the thought of the dinner that evening.

"What is it, Lucius?" Cass asked, his voice dropping so that we would not be overheard.

Opening my eyes, I pulled my hand out of my pocket with the blue velvet ring box still within my grasp. My thumb stroked over the fabric. It had already started to get groove mark from where I had kept the damn thing in my pocket, my fingers stroking over the material as I waited for the right opportunity. It just never seemed to be the right time.

"Is that what I think it is?" he whispered, making no attempt to touch the box.

I nodded stiffly. "I got the blacksmith to forge it for me. I crafted it from my sword. It means she will always have my protection even if I am not with her. As much as I would like to lock her up and keep her safe from danger, Savannah is a fighter even if she does not realise it herself."

Smiling, I glanced down at the box and popped open the lid. The ring within shone with the ethereal glow only an angel blade possessed. The metal had been forged around a large gleaming gem. It glittered and sparkled with its own magical light.

"Is that?"

I grinned.

Cass whistled through his teeth. "Damn, where did you find a stone that big? The only one that large was in ..." The angel paused, his eyes widening as he looked from my face to the ring. "No. You didn't."

I laughed and I wasn't too sure if it was at him or at the absurdity of the situation. Never had I thought I would desecrate a gift from my father but, when I had thought about Savannah, I knew that I wanted nothing else for her. "Yes, it's a seraph diamond. She deserves nothing less."

Cass stretched out a hand and clapped it on my shoulder before pulling me into a hug. My eyes widened for a moment. And then I was slapping him on the back and laughing. Despite the danger I was about to face, I was happy. Never had I thought I would get a chance at a life. I was far from Prince Charming but Savannah was with me out of her free will. We may have been destined for one another but she was still choosing me.

"I never thought I would see you like this." The fallen angel muttered as he stepped away, his trademark trench coat flapping around his ankles.

"Me neither but I knew she was different from the day we met."

"Meaning she turned you down."

Without thought, I hit him on the arm and chuckled when the man grunted in pain. I quickly sobered. "I need you to do me a favour."

"I know that look." The man cut in, his voice grim. "I don't like it already."

I glanced down at the ring box. "I need you to stay here with Savannah and Danny. I trust you the most and right now I want them with someone I trust." I shrugged hating the way my nerves jangled at me. "Something doesn't feel right."

"That's a better reason for me to come with you."

I shook my head and held out my hand to stop any more protests. "No, I need you here. It's not up for debate. I'll take some of the trainees with me, you will stay here. You will protect those two with your life or you'll have me to deal with."

Cass shook his head. He looked set to protest so I glared at him letting some of the darkness in my soul to rise to the surface. He gulped. "Fine. I'll remain here but just know I am extremely dissatisfied with this."

My face felt as if it was cut with stone as I stepped away from him and towards the door. "That's fine. I can handle your dissatisfaction. What I couldn't deal with is losing my family. That includes you."

Without another word, I pocketed the ring and walked away. As I passed, I beckoned several of the guards to follow me and then as a squad we journeyed to Tartarus.

The underworld was made up of many different layers. A city sprawled out for miles in every direction around the castle. It was filled with the souls of those who had signed away their ticket to heaven through one manner or another.

And then there was Tartarus. It was where the damned souls served out their sentence. It was not a place of smiles and laugher. There were many different levels to it and the further in you travelled, the more tarnished the soul and the more terrifying the punishment. It was situated at the further parts of hell, so dark and twisted that it was not a place one liked to linger. It was the chilling truth that even I, the ruler of Hell, was completely terrified of the horrors which lurked within the most distant and remote parts of the fiery pits. There were things locked within the prison which were so old and powerful that it was impossible to know what powers they possessed and what they were capable of. Tartarus had existed long before I even came into existence and it would certainly last a long time afterwards.

Glancing over at my companions, I tried not to roll my eyes. I failed. Every single one of them looked as if they were going to lose control of their bowels. They were supposed to be the best of the trainees but each of them was untested. Threats didn't occur in the underworld very often and we were heading into the darkest most dangerous parts of the underworld.

"You, what's your name?" I asked the smallest of the bunch of demons.

She was small in height but she was strong, her body covered in lean muscle. Her features were harsh, as if there had been carved by a sharp blade. One side of her face was covered in smooth tan coloured skin and then the other side was covered in shimmering emerald coloured scales which ran from her hairline down under her tunic. She looked like a child of a dragon. And in the stubborn set of her jaw, I could see that she had the potential to be as fierce as one.

"Sonakshi ," she replied, her voice strangely delicate despite the tough front she was trying to put on.

"I need you to stay here Sonakshi. You look like you're more capable of taking care of yourself than the others." I ordered. My voice hard so that she knew there would be no arguing on this. "If we are not back within four hours, send for reinforcements. And be alert."

Now the young woman looked a little unsettled. Good. It might just save her life. She lifted her chin and nodded stiffly. "Yes sir."

"The rest of you, you're with me."

I didn't wait for the others trainees to give their assent. I just started walking. I didn't want to look over my shoulder and see those young demon faces with their fear displayed so clearly. I needed to be able to trust them. I didn't though. No matter how much I tried to. They had no battle experience and I had a feeling they were going to need every drop of their training.

The path to the deepest and deepest pits of Tartarus was long and arduous. It wasn't supposed to be easy to get to and it was even harder to get out. Unless you knew where you were going that is. I had only visited it sparingly, taking great care not to leave a trace of my steps or markers on the path so others couldn't follow. It wasn't a place for the unsuspecting to wander into.

Most demons didn't know about this part of Tartarus. There were rumours. There was no way to stem the imagination of my people but no one knew that these pits actually existed. Only Hades and I were privy to such information. And now these, wet behind the ears, demons were about to get their own awakening.

The path was littered with loose stones and gnarled branches covered in vicious thorns which caught and tugged at our clothes as we journeyed further away from civilization. And then the hallucinations came. Prepared, I was quickly able to shake off the disorientating scenes which overtook my vision.

Turning, I watched as each of the young demons stumbled to a stop as they too crossed the invisible barrier and succumbed. Not even hesitating, I struck out and slapped the one directly behind me. The glazed expression which had overtaken to slim man's expression snapped back to awareness. He brought his hand up to his face where a red hand print was already forming.

"Pass it on." I ordered. He stared at me in confusion. His eyes, which were green with a black diamond in the middle much like a snake, contracted as his fear consumed him. "Hit them or slap them. You need to wake them up before they wander off into places which will be much worse than you can possibly imagine. Do it. Now."

Startled, the young man back pedalled into the others sending them all falling to the floor like dominoes. I rolled my eyes. Incompetent fools the lot of them.

Even as I watched the red haired man do as I had instructed, my eyes kept dancing away and scanning the landscape. Something else was here. The hairs on the nape of my neck stood up. I resisted the urge rub at them and instead called my sword forth.

"Weapons out." I barked, as my entire body tensed, shielding the younger men as much as I could while they attempted to get themselves ready.

My sword shone bright, its light pervading the air around me like an ethereal halo. I breathed in deep, attempting to keep a calm head even as I sensed the approach of something old. Something which was getting closer by the second but I had yet to see.

"Stay alert and follow me. We're too exposed here."

I had barely gone two steps forwards when the fiery red skies which dominated this part of Tartarus turned black and thunder rumbled overhead. I blinked. Never, in all of my existence, had I seen a storm in Tartarus.

This was bad. Really bad.

Glancing over my shoulder, I stared at the group of demons. They were still where I had left them, their weapons hanging limply at their sides as they huddled together. They were supposed to be the best and the brightest but already they were drowning at the first sign of trouble.

"Weapons up and follow me if you want to live to see tomorrow." I shouted at them before striding away.

A loud wailing rent the air. The sound was so loud and oppressive that I stumbled. I barely managed to catch my momentum before I toppled head-first into the brambles. A yell behind me announced that some of the others weren't so lucky.

I didn't have time to check who was still upright. A whistling sound pierced the sky above me so I ducked on instinct. Something flew over my head, passing so closely that I felt it ruffle my hair as it passed. A second later there was a grunt and wet squelching sound as the object made impact with one of the young demons. Snapping my head around, I tried to keep my emotions in check as the young man behind me stared down at the large glistening spear protruding from his chest.

He staggered back a step before his legs gave out beneath him. His body crashed to the floor and his entire body started to shudder. His snake like eyes rolled up into his head and black foam bubbled out of his mouth. One of the other young demons rushed over to help, their hand grasping the spear in an attempt to yank it from the writhing body. Yet, as soon as their hand made contact, they too slumped over and their body began convulsing.

"Don't touch them. Stay back." I barked.

Another whistle as another spear approached fast. "Get down!"

It was too late. Another grunt as another hit was scored. Then a loud crash as the body went to the floor. Closing my eyes, I willed the glow of my sword to dim until appeared nothing more than dull ordinary metal. More and more strikes flew through the air, getting faster and faster. One by one I heard their bodies hit the ground.

I felt sick. If only I had chosen to come alone. They didn't deserve to have their lives ended like this.

The ground shuddered. I spun around as I sensed a large presence at my back. I lifted my sword but not in time. Long talons struck out, tearing through my clothing and flesh straight down to my bone. And then I felt it. Poison entering my system. There was nothing I could do to prevent it. Paralysis quickly spread outwards from the wound, rushing through blood and tissue like an aggressive infection.

The tang on blood on my tongue sent fear rushing through my system. I was the Devil. I was supposed to be powerful and here I was being defeated by a scratch. I collapsed back onto the floor, my sword still clutched tightly in my hand. If I was going out, I was going down fighting.

"Don't worry. I'm not going to kill you." A voice rasped from the darkness. It was unnatural. It was so painful to listen to it made my soul shiver.

Drawing in a deep breath in an attempt to gather my faltering strength and control, I swung out into the darkness with my sword. The blade flared brightly as it made contact. And then the sword trembled within my hold. The metal gave its own scream as it shattered into a dozen glowing pieces. I gulped.

The presence moved closer. I felt its fetid breath as it blew across my face. This was it. This was how it was all going to end. Its entire body was hunched over mine but with the dark clouds above meant I could not make out any details about the form which hovered inches from me. I could only feel the strange absence of warmth.

I was powerless. My sword was gone and every part of my body had been affected by the venom which had been poured into my body. I could breathe and I could blink but that was all my body was able to do.

"You are going to regret that feeble attempt." The voice whispered in my ear, almost crooning as the sharp tip of the talon scratched down the side of my face.

A hand plunged into my chest a second later. My heart lurched as the sharp talon topped fingers latched on and started to pull. But it wasn't anything of flesh they were pulling. It was my soul. I screamed at the complete agony of body and soul being wrenched apart, the threads binding them snapping one by one. I could feel each painful separation like a physical blow to my body

The monster gave one last pull and I felt the last tie to my soul stretching taught. The fibres started to unravel one by one. A shuddering breath passed my lips as my body gave up the fight. The cord snapped and as my eyes closed, I became vaguely aware of Savannah's ring box as it dug into my hip. Then there was nothing. No thought. No feeling. I welcomed oblivion.
