[2.3: The Upper Moons]
Reminder: I am changing the plot to my liking. Do NOT comment on discrepancies.
Kokushibo POV [Present day]
"She is alive!" I passed Daki's room in the infinity castle, the twins unaware of my presence. "Gyutaro, I can feel it in my blood as well as sense it. We must bring her back here-"
"You can't. You know Muzan will kill us if we disobey him again. It's bad enough your time as an Oiran has you used to the prim and proper human norms despite you being a demon. It's time you returned to your demon heritage."
I walked into their room and they both stood up and bowed, Daki looking nervous. "You two are fools. Master has a plan, don't do anything foolish. Daki, you are to continue being an oiran. Your presence in the entertainment district will only draw her back. Then she will see Doma and our plan will be put into immediate effect."
Daki looked slightly uncomfortable. "But she was our mother. How could we murder her like that? In the place she raised us? Isn't Doma still doing his operations in Hoshu castle?"
"Mother?" I scoffed. "The second Doma turned you into demons in order to save your life was the day she stopped caring. Would she have left you that day if you were human?"
Gyutaro shook his head and looked at his sister. "Ume, you know he's right."
She looked skeptical but I knew as well as she did that she could and would not disobey Muzan. "I know. You are right. I will lead her right to Hoshu castle."
Reader POV
A week after the blood moon festival, I traveled to the Hoshu district. Hajime, a loyal follower and one of my best swordsman informed me of a demon's presence, calling them filth.
"You fools do realize I'm a demon, right?"
"Yes, but you are on our side," one said. "You are, right?"
"Yes. Clear the area, it can get messy." The two saluted me and left. I followed the scent and came to an oiran's house, recognizing it as the former inn where I had stayed with Doma centuries ago. One of the ladies knew me by the seal I carried somehow and escorted me to a room with a veil blocking me from seeing who was sitting in front of me, though I could see who it was.
"So you finally come visit me after hearing I've been luring men to their deaths, as well as women..." the person said. "Do you recognize me?"
"It's Ume," I said flatly. "And you are an upper rank. I can't help but feel proud you are stronger, but disappointed in the way you do it."
"Mother." Ume looked at me from behind the fan as the curtain lifted. "It's been centuries. I had thought surely you had forgotten me. Some tea?"
I watched her pour the liquid, narrowing my eyes at the way a droplet landed on her hand and the way she hissed in pain under her breath.
I sat down and drank the tea on the table knowing it was poisoned with something strong enough to kill a demon, though I had been building an immunity. "I would never forget someone I love. Even though they try to kill me with poison."
She wanted to speak but I quickly cut her off. "Did you really think I would fall for it, Ume? I've been alive for centuries. I've had countless people close to me try and kill me, some have even chopped my head off. But tell me, why do you side with this monster?"
"He's given me everything I never had."
It was so quiet that I could hear the heavy breathing of a man two rooms down in a courtesan room.
"So you would kill me in his place?" I chuckled a bit and poured myself some more tea. "You know, for tea that was poisoned, it's quite delicious. Fatal to us demons but a delicacy to humans. Tell me, have you enjoyed your time as a demon knowing you are the reason why I created the Demon Slaying Corp?"
She stared at me with wide eyes. "You're the one who created it? Gyutaro and I thought for sure Soma or Yoriichi created it."
I chuckled. "As if. I love my sons, but they're fools. We're all fools. I was smart enough to build something quickly before I would be destroyed."
Ume's eyes narrowed and I saw her oiran strips start to move. I quickly pulled out my blade and cut her arm off, sending her a warning glance.
"Ume, I'd advise you to never raise your weapons against me, you will loose. I did not raise you to be so brazen."
She scoffed and regenerated it. "You're so full of yourself." And her weapons were drawn, capturing me. As I was in her thread, I heard her mocking me.
"Starlight Breathing Nineteenth Form: Sting of Scorpio." I moved my sword in a certain way and her body was stung, me able to escape her confines. "Did you think that parlor trick would be enough to imprison me? Try again."
Ume gave me a look of hatred mixed with angst, something I could not describe. "I'm not trying to kill you, Mother. I'm trying to...make it easier to bring you to Muzan. He still wants you in our plan!"
My sword met hers with brutal force as people rushed out, screaming in fear at the destruction. "And what is this plan, Ume?"
"It's Daki! And we wanted you to help us. We owe these humans nothing! Under Muzan's rule, only Demons and other supernatural folk will be allowed here."
The fight continued, me emerging victorious. I held the sword to her neck, using my weight to pin her to the ground, whispering lowly. "My dear, I could kill you right here. But to show I am not that man, I will spare you. But only now."
"When I leave this place, I will no longer be your mother," I said with a hint of sadness. "I did not raise you to kill innocents and to serve a bloodthirsty monster. You can come with me and fight him, restore your humanity. Or you can stay here and be slain. My descendants are strong and they will stop you. The choice is yours, Ume. Will you live as Ume once more or will you die as Daki?"
I left the area, knowing she was conflicted in her feelings. But ultimately in the end, she knew what she wanted and it wasn't good for humanity. She stopped me and briefly held my arm.
"The days I spent with you, Soma, my brother, and Doma were my fondest. I am on my own path now, Mother. I'm sorry, but it's too late to turn back. If I don't, he'll kill Gyutaro."
He will die anyway. You both could've gotten a chance had you came with me.
"Then I will not stay here anymore. If I see you on the battlefield, I may have to kill you. I will remember my daughter whom I loved dearly. She is long gone, only a faint shadow of her existing. I love you, Ume. But I see now you are Daki and I will respect your decision. Be well." I left the place, not looking back once.
And yet...I waited a bit outside, knowing Gyutaro and Daki shared a form, and sure enough I heard him emerge.
"She had the option to kill us, Daki..." he looked at the retreating form of their adoptive mother. "Yet she choose to spare us. Why?"
Daki didn't know. "Maybe she stills cares about us. Brother, do you think we made the right choice? Is it too late to turn back?"
Gyutaro looked at her with a pained smile. "We're already condemned to hell, Daki. Whether we help or not. But...I suppose helping now won't hurt."
The pair chased after the woman who raised her sword but was met with a brutal hug from her long-lost adoptive children.
"Um-"
"We realize how wrong we were," Daki said. "And we will fight with you."
I raised my eyebrow and looked for a hint of lies but only found truth in the pair. "Very well. We will meet here in two days. I will send someone else in my place. You must prove your loyalty. I will be watching you two very closely, as will he."
"We are prepared for the risk," Gyutaro claimed with excitement. "I've always hated Muzan anyway. He's a prick."
"And what of Doma?" Daki worried as I traveled towards the outskirts of Hoshu. "I am not sure where he stands."
I thought of my past lover, pain in my heart. "He will have to make his decision for himself. I would give anything to go back to the time where I thought he loved me."
"(y/n), you know he does," Gyutaro shrugged. "He stills wears that hairpin-"
"What." I looked at him sharply. "I gave it to the Gojo clan, Soma's descendants and mine with Doma. How did he come to have it once more?"
"I am not sure," the man responded honestly. "But be careful, he knows you're alive. Mother, he is still waiting for you to return to the castle. We know he's still there right now."
I looked up at the rising sun and sighed. "Then I'f better get there fast. But I'm warning both of you; should you betray the Demon Slaying Corp, it will be you two who fall first. Do not disappoint me. I cannot defend you even though you are my children."
