MIRACLE
Miles away from Bertrand's location, Jonas lost it. The man didn't know what to do with himself as he paced.
"Jonas, you need to get some sleep."
"I can't."
"Go and see Sierra at least," his father said.
"Dad, how can I look at my wife in the eyes and tell her that our son is still missing. I might as well die now."
Jonas was dramatic, but who wouldn't react the same way?
"Jonas, it's not you're fault."
"I shouldn't have left. I made a mistake. I swear if anything happens to Leone, I'll kill him and the Gauthiers."
"Jonas," his dad slapped Jonas' cheeks with both hands. "Stop talking nonsense. Go and see your wife. Let the police do their job. Your sister is competent. Let her help you. Rely on us for once."
"That's all I do, dad. Rely on everyone."
"No, you are cordial and scared to bother like your wife, but families are there for that. Your mom and I are here to be bothered by you. Now go to the hospital. I'll call you if there's anything new. Also, change clothes. You smell as though you sweat your life's reserve away."
At that instant, Elsa came running up to them, "we've got them. We found Leone, Jonas."
Jonas went directly to the hospital, where Leone was transferred. Bertrand was taken into custody and brought to Stockholm.
Leone had to go through a battery of tests before Jonas was allowed to see him. The man's eyes ached. He hadn't shut them and was incapable of blinking. He advanced to the room where a nurse and a police officer kept Leone.
The doctor briefed Jonas before he entered, "he was dehydrated, and the toxicology report shows he consumed a solution close to Melatonin. We can suppose the person needed him to stop crying and sleep. He has no signs of psychical abuse. He has a small skin irritation on his bottom due to the dampness of his diaper. Other than that, your son is psychically well as for the restㅡ."
The doctor's words rang like a déja vu.
"Thank you, doctor, may I see him."
"Yes, of course."
The doctor opened the door, and Jonas entered the room where Leone slept. He touched his boy's head. He could not hold back the tears of relief as the man breathed for the first time since the night before.
How could someone do this to a child?
Again Jonas forgot he was one of the lucky ones. Over hundred seventy-five thousand children were abducted per year worldwide. Twelve per thousand were either kidnapped by a parent or relative. Of course, no one imagines themselves a victim of such an act.
Jonas continued to caress his child's almost bald head and waited. The sensation of his father's hand upon woke the boy. He opened his eyes, the place was so bright, and someone that looked like his father smiled at him.
"Hey."
"Paㅡpa," the boy sat up and wiped his eyes.
Was the nightmare really over?
Leone's lips quivered made a lower case n before the boy broke down, "papa, papa," Leone grasped his father and sunk his head in Jonas shirt, "papa, it was horrible, why papa, where were you? The bad person, the bad person, said he was my dad. Oh papa, don't ever leave me again."
Jonas could only guess what his child tried to express. Leone had a lot on his chest, "and Rufu papa, Rufu is asleep. He'll never wake up. I know he won't. And mama, that bad person did something, mama, mama."
Leone cried, hugging Jonas tightly. The boy didn't let go even when the doctors gave a green light for them to leave; Leone hung on to his father like a koala.
An ambulance transported them back to Stockholm and to the hospital where Sierra was.
Ulrich got up as soon as he saw him enter the hall, "Jonas." He stretched out his hand to touch Leone's head, but the boy pushed him away, "no."
"I'm sorry, Leone, it's uncle Ulrich, you know me."
The doctor warned Jonas; that Leone could have reactions due to the trauma.
"Please don't do that. Leone's mad about his hair."
Ulrich nodded, "mom is inside with Sierra."
"Has she woken up?"
"Yes, Jonas, it isn't pretty in there," Ulrich said solemnly. Though a tough man, one sight of Sierra made Ulrich prefer to stay outside. He wondered how his brother would support seeing his wife that way.
Jonas nodded; no matter how hard he tried to brace himself, he knew nothing could prepare him for this. Jonas would have left Leone with Ulrich in other circumstances, the boy didn't need to see Sierra in this state, but it was impossible then. Jonas got ready to turn the doorknob when the doctor arrived with three other people Jonas figured were interns.
"Mr. Potsmann, I presume?"
"Yes."
"Good, I'm doctor Ernest Stabler, and these semi-competent-looking people are here to observe. Shall we go in?"
Jonas would have laughed on another day, but there he just nodded, and they entered.
Jonas took a step back from the bed when he saw Sierra. The shock was immense for the man. The man didn't know where to set his eyes between Sierra's bandaged head, arm, cast leg, the cuts, and other bruises on her face.
His mother got up and came to hug him, "she's okay, Jonas. Everything will be okay. I'll be outside if you need me."
Sigrid left to let the doctor proceed with the update on Sierra's condition.
"Your wife fell. Luckily there was no impact on her spine. She has a head injury without consequence, but it made her bleed a lot. As for her leg, she has a fracture, and eight to twelve weeks of recovery are needed. Other than that, she and the baby are fine. The car crash didn't cause placental abruption."
"Baby?" Jonas's eyes widened, "what, baby?"
"Yes, your wife is pregnant."
Jonas looked at Sierra, who slept at that moment, before switching his gaze to the doctor, "she can't. I mean, my wife had a miscarriage two months ago."
"Oh, sorry to hear that, but she's pregnant now. It isn't uncommon. A woman can start ovulating two weeks after a miscarriage. Chances of being pregnant are higher for women who try to conceive in the three months following months."
"But she had a cervical inefficiency. Can it happen again?"
The doctor could see Jonas worried. Like the rest of the hospital, he heard about the man whose son was kidnapped and whose wife was seriously injured.
"Mr. Potsmann, a miscarriage is unlikely to happen twice, just like a cervical inefficiency now that we have the history. Only two percent of women suffer from repetitive miscarriages."
Jonas nodded and listened to the rest of the doctor's recommendations. "Unfortunately, because of your wife's condition, we can't prescribe any strong pain killers for her leg."
The situation gave no time to rejoice as Jonas realized how Sierra would spend the first trimester of her pregnancy. There seemed to be no end to their suffering.
Doctor Stabler questioned his interns before leaving. Jonas stood staring at Sierra for a few seconds before following the group of doctors.
"Doctor Stabler."
The doctor sighed and turned to face him, "yes, Mr. Potsmann."
"Are you sure there isn't any bleeding, that we won't lose another?"
Doctor Stabler smiled, "I'm not supposed to say this, but believe me when a say any pregnancy that survives what your wife lived last night isn't one to slip away. The child Ms.Potsmann is carrying appears to have a strong will to live if you ask me. Have a good day, Mr. Potsmann."
It wasn't much, but it was enough. Jonas returned to Sierra's room. During all this time, Leone remained quiet in his father's arms. Now everyone was gone, the child revived, "mama, mama."
"No, Leone, mama is exhausted and hurt."
Jonas brought a seat closer to the bed and sat. Leone fell asleep shortly after. He placed him on the small sofa chair. He returned next to Sierra and held her hand until sleep claimed him too. The man woke up with Sierra's hand upon his head, "Jonas."
"Sierra, I'm here."
"Sorry, Leone, Iㅡ."
"No, Sierra Leone is okay. Leone is here; the police caught Bertrand. It's over Sierra," Jonas got up and went to get the boy whose eyes popped open as soon as Jonas lifted him.
Tears welled in Sierra's eyes, "Leone," she whispered.
"Mama," the boy said, trying to stretch his hands out.
"No, Leone, mama can't carry you. She's already carrying someone else," Jonas said.
Sierra frowned, "what do you mean?"
There would not be a better moment. Still, it was an odd position to be in for Jonas.
"You're pregnant, Sierra."
"It'sㅡ.it's impossible, we onlyㅡ. I fell, Iㅡ."
"The doctors are formal."
Jonas wondered who of the two was more in shock to learn the news.
"Is it ㅡokay?"
"Yes, both of you are. You need to rest, Sierra. Doctor Stabler said the recovery would be eight weeks long, and you can't have strong painkillers because of the baby. It'sㅡ."
"Jonas, it's okay, I'll do it. I'll hold; I'll protect it."
Sigrid and Ulrich left the hospital to give them time alone.
"I bet I look a mess."
The comment made Jonas smile, "don't sweat it, Sierra, I stink. Dad said I sweated my life's reserves."
Sierra released coughs instead of the intended laughter.
"Mama, mé cheveu, [mama, my hair misprounonced mes cheveux].
"Oh mon, bébé," it was the first time Sierra noticed his head. The woman held back her tears. There was no use crying, "don't worry, Leone, it will grow back. We'll grow it back."
