13. The Trial of the Sphere

Standing on the balcony overwatching the two humans sparring, Erdudvyl felt somewhat disheartened by the conversation that had taken place with her fellow peers. Being the youngest priestess within the tower, she had never been taken seriously. Being the daughter of the high priest meant that others believed she hadn't earned the position.

The truth was far different. She had worked harder and longer than her peers and she was far more gifted, especially as she was a Sorceress of the Elements. Or perhaps these thoughts were just compounding her arrogance and actually the truth was she simply believed herself to be far more important than she actually was.

Watching Loldirr struggle to defend against the blistering speed that Ethelston was fighting her with seemed to reinforce her concerns.  This Loldirr was a human for one, she didn't seem to possess any unique skills, and it certainly didn't seem like she controlled any of the elemental spheres. She was risking everything on someone who seemed so ordinary.

Erdudvyl could feel someone entering her presence, turning her head she spotted the fair-skinned silver-haired priest that was her father. She smiled out of courtesy but knew she was about to be rebuked about the previous events.

"My darling daughter, I believe you have gone to far this time." Vaalyun, the high priest of the tower chastised.

Edurdvyl sighed before gracefully turning her head towards the tall Elf holding the high priest's sceptre. "You always taught me to do what I felt was right and for the good of all Elves, " she turned back towards the two sparring partners. "Whatever the cost."

"They will rule to exile you, you must realise that. You will not be welcome in any elven city any more. Is that a risk you are willing to take for these Wiðgýnan." the high priest commented.

"Wiðgýnan is such a derogatory name. Outcast is better, and as I said, whatever the cost." Erdudvyl replied somewhat disheartened, knowing that an immortal life away from her own kind could await her.

Vaalyun scowled at his stubborn committed daughter. "You better be right, otherwise you will lose the Ar Moal name along with this stupidity." Not hesitating to hear her response, the High Priest turned furiously and walked away from her presence abruptly.

Erdudvyl wiped away a tear rolling down her cheek and took a long deep breath to withstand the floodgates of tears that wanted to burst forward. Padding down her white flowing gown, she proceeded to meet the two refugees.

Gracefully taking her first steps onto the courtyard she was immediately taken aback by the buff physique of Ethelston as he leant down and gulped water from the fountain near where they trained.

As Ethelston looked up at her, he saw her face scrunch up in a disapproving manner. He smiled, but Erdudvyl immediately turned her gaze from him and headed towards Loldirr who had sat under the tree.

"Loldirr, please come with me." Erdudvyl carefully asked.

Loldirr stood and looked down at the petite elven figure in front of her. "Where are we going?"

"I shall explain along the way. Your mercenary friend must remain here."

Looking up to the shirtless Ethelston she wanted to get some indication of his thoughts. He briefly looked at her, then at Erdudvyl, and then back at Loldirr before giving a small nod of approval.

Leading the way, Erdudvyl glided into the tower with Loldirr closely in tow. Instantly, Loldirr was mesmerised by the architecture in the building and how it was so much more sophisticated than anything she had encountered before.

"What do you know of the Sorcerers of the Elements?" Erdudvyl asked as they walked past two elven guards.

Loldirr studied them as they looked back with disdain on their faces. "I don't know what you are talking about."

"The Sorcerers of the Elements are the most powerful beings known to exist. They have the ability to control one of the six elements, earth, fire, water, air, life and death. Only thirty-six people, at any time are one of the Sorcerers. Four are in this very building." Erdudvyl explained.

"Why are you telling me this?" Loldirr asked.

"Because you are a Sorceress of the Elements."

Loldirr stopped in her tracks trying to process the information being given to her. "I am no Sorceress. I have no powers, I'm just a hunter, I know how to hunt, nothing more."

Erdudvyl stopped and turned around. She wasn't sure if she wanted to scold this girl or encourage her. It was when she saw the fear filling her green eyes that she knew what was required. "Loldirr, I understand that times have been taxing for you. Until recently you considered yourself to be nothing more than a hunter to a pointless village in the Isovine Empire. Now you find yourself to be the true Empress of Isovine and a Sorceress of untold power. You have encountered many foes on your travels here, but you are still strong. If you ever needed proof of your power, that should be enough."

"How do you know these things?" Loldirr asked.

"I receive visions, quite a few have been of you recently."

"I have barely survived and lost dear friends, " Loldirr remonstrated. "I have barely held things together."

Erdudvyl was starting to get frustrated by pinning all her hopes on this young girl. Loldirr was clearly not what Erdudvyl had expected. She had to believe that her visions were true and that the terrified girl in front of her was actually the most powerful woman in existence.

"Queens are born, young Loldirr, rulers are made." encouraged Erdudvyl. She proceeded to head towards the courtroom in which she had been chastised earlier.

Loldirr followed her closely behind. Confused as the door closed behind them and seemed to disappear. All she could see was Erdudvyl standing next to a table with a clear crystal gem placed on it.

"You have been brought by Erdudvyl Ar Moal to partake in the trial of the sphere to identify if you are truly, as she claims, a Sorceress of the Elements." a voice echoed throughout the room.

Loldirr looked confused as she could not tell where the voice was coming from.

"State your name for the record." the voice continued.

"Loldirr Hunter." she hesitated "Sorry, Loldirr of house Aex-Igh"

There were murmurs within the room once again. "We were informed that the house of Aex-Igh was no more. Can you explain this?"

"I can not."

The murmurs continued.

Erdudvyl was starting to lose her patience. "May we continue with the trial, her family name is not what is to be tested here."

"Young Erdudvyl Ar Moal, your continued impatience brings unnecessary disruption to the proceedings. Her family name is as much in question as your claims of her power. All I see is a scared young woman. She claims to be a member of the most highest human family are questionable considering that family is no longer of existence, and I see no evidence of this power she apparently possesses."

Something in those words seemed to stir a frustration in Loldirr, she took a step forward a spoke assertively to the people she couldn't see. "Scared? Questionable? Powerless? I was instructed to come here by Lord Edric Darke who I watched get brutally slaughtered by a Death Wraith. The same Death Wraith then proceeded to almost kill me. I have only learnt of my lineage recently by a man who's honour I dare not question and have been brought here to test my power, power I did not know I had." she spoke passionately.

The murmurs continued once more. "Disrespectful like most humans too." one voice reacted.

Erdudvyl chuckled, knowing that Loldirr, too, had ruffled some feathers.

"The trial is simple, " explained Erdudvyl "The gem reflects the powers you possess. By taking hold of it, it will glow depending on your power. Red means you possess the ability to control fire, blue for water, yellow for air, green for earth, black for death and white, " Erdudvyl grabbed hold of the gem, instantly a bright white light filled the room that they stood in "is for life."

Watching the gem glow, Loldirr smiled. "You are a sorceress?" she asked.

Erdudvyl nodded. "Just like you." she then held the gem towards Loldirr.

Loldirr was reluctant to hold it and the story it may tell. "What if I have no powers?"

"It will not glow." replied Erdudvyl calmly.

Loldirr took a deep breath before taking hold of the gem. As Erdudvyl removed her hand, the room turned dark.

The murmurs started once more.

"I guess I possess no power." Loldirr chuckled.

Just then, the totem blasted out a bright purple light. Immediately the room was being filled with purple and the surprised faces of the Elves within could be seen like purple silhouettes.

Loldirr looked towards Erdudvyl who seemed mesmerised by the purple light. "What does purple mean?"

"Everything, " Erdudvyl beaming smile seemed genuine for the first time, "it means you can control all six spheres."
