Chapter 39: I fight an Entire War Zone

I felt my body slowly waking up. I hated being deaf. For more then one reason. ms right now my reason was, I couldn't take in my surroundings. I didn't know where I was, what was happening and if I was in immediate danger.

I forced my eyes open, instant panic gave me a rush of adrenaline. My hands flailing around, trying to find my knives. I was on my feet, knives held tight before I realized where I was. I was standing on top of a bed, back in the Plaza hotel. There were wounded campers everywhere.

Will and a few other medics were flying around trying to help everyone at once. I leapt off the bed, scaring the young Aphrodite camper who had just came over holding a tray of ambrosia and Nectar Aid juice boxes for wounded campers. I shoved my knives back into their holsters and snatched an Ambrosia cookie and juice box.

"Sorry. Didn't mean to scare you " I signed. And headed for the door.

Will slid infront of me. His hands on his hips and a look of reproach on his face.

"No." He signed, "back to bed."

"Ha. No. Move Will, or I will move you." I signed back.

I shoved the cookie in my mouth. It takes like Sally's blue birthday cake and Dad's pancakes.

"I'm all better." I signed. "where's Percy and Raph and the the others?"

Will was looking at me suspiciously. His arms crossed over his chest, and we glared at each other for a moment.

"Fine. Eat another cookie and I'll walk you to the door." He tossed me a cookie and I shoved it into my mouth. "Raph went back out to fight. No idea where he is now. Him and Glitter dropped you off, saying you took out two Titans and a whole like army of monsters! Then passed out from overexertion. Percy is fighting some Greek mythology pig-"

"A pig?"

"Yes. A sow, The Clazmonian Sow. It terrorized Greek towns back in the day."

"Of course it did. Because why not when pigs fly?" I rolled my eyes.

"Exactly. So he's fighting that thing and everyone is fighting other things.". Will explained.

"Great. Now I gotta go help."

"Hey Glitter, where you at girl?"

"On my way My Lady!"

I turned to look at Will he was still looking at me like I was lying to him.

"I'm fine. I'll rest when I'm dead."

"Which will be sooner then you think if you don't stop."

"Well if I don't help were all dead. Besides, you also need rest. When did you sleep last?"

"No rest for the weary."

I snorted in ammusment.

"Here, Lady!"

"I love you Will. Stay safe!"

"Kill some stuff for me, ya geek!"

"Always."

I nodded and ran the rest of the way to the front door, I glanced over my shoulder and saw Will walking back to the infirmary.

I pushed the door open and Glitter was waiting, her main tossing, sending out sparks. In a swift fluid motion I ran and leapt into her back and she soared into the air.

"Tell me what been going on "

"Percy has killed the sow. But the enemy arm is starting to circle. We are loosing ground."

"Not good!"

Midtown was a war zone. I couldn't hear them, but I saw explosions all over, green Greek fire and regular old fire explosions. We flew over little skirmishes everywhere. A giant was ripping up trees in Bryant Park while dryads pelted him with nuts. Outside the Waldorf Astoria, a bronze statue of Benjamin Franklin was whacking a hellhound with a rolled-up newspaper. A trio of Hephaestus campers fought a squad of dracaenae in the middle of Rockefeller Center.

Swoop down, Glitter. We can roast them.

She did just that. She dived down and I tucked myself closer to her neck, and as we shot towards them like a comet from the sky, I lit my hands on fire and sent a blast of devisatting hot fire at the monsters insinerating them. The campers froze in shock, as Glitter and I straightened out and shot back into the sky I saw them raise their weapons in a cheer. They raced off to find something else to fight.

As we got back into the sky, I could tell from the smoke and explosions that the real action had moved farther south. Our defenses were collapsing. The enemy was closing in on the Empire State Building.

We did a quick sweep of the surrounding area. The Hunters had set up a defensive line on 37th, just three blocks north of Olympus. To the east on Park Avenue, Jake Mason and some other Hephaestus campers were leading an army of statues against the enemy. To the west, the Demeter cabin and Grover's nature spirits had turned Sixth Avenue into a jungle that was hampering a squadron of Kronos's demigods. The south was clear for now, but the flanks of the enemy army were swinging around. A few more minutes and we'd be totally surrounded.

"We have to land where they need us most,"

"That's everywhere, My Lady."

I saw the Athena cabin fighting a Hyperborean giant. Put if the sky a black thing shot down and I realized it was Percy on Blackjack.

Keep going. They will be fire.

Yes Lady. I think we are needed where the army is trying to close in around.

I think your right.

Glitter turned and shot back the other way. Just as we saw the arm marching down the street, another huge Hyperborean giant shoved its way to the front.

Glitter swooped down in front of it, kicking it in the face. She flew out of reach and circled. I grabbed my knives just as she dived again. This time I leapt off her back, using my knives to stab into the back of the giant. I lit my hands on fire and slid down its back, using my knives. The giant erupted in flames and then poofed out of existence.

I landed light as a cat on the pavement. Standing up I sheathed my knives and yanked my bow off and fired arrow after arrow into the oncoming monster army. I didn't care if it was a hellhound,
Empousai, Dracaenae, Demigod or something in-between. They came at me, I sent my never ending arrows into the arm. Each arrow was different. Some were regular celestial bronze, some lit up in a blaze of deadly fire some were blessed (or cursed, depending on your point of view) with plauges, some were super sonic and I could feel the vibrations when they exploded.

Suddenly a hand from behind me grabbed my armor straps and yanked me. I stumbled and looked behind me. Raph was there. Looking exhausted, and bloody and dirty. But I smiled in relief. I didn't know where he had gone. But he had brought reinforcements.

"Come on. These guys will hold this line. We need your help somewhere else!"

Glitter, can you stay here and help?

Yes Lady! I will burn them all!

Ya you will.

The next hour was a blur. I fought like I'd never fought before- wading into legions of dracaenae, taking out dozens of telkhines with every strike, destroying empousai and knocking out enemy demigods. No matter how many I defeated, more took their place.

At one point I was beside Percy, who gave me a twisted smile. Then I was beside Annabeth. I slid the bracelet off and grabbed her bad wrist and forced it on her. Pressing the button the shield explained.

"You lost your seeing shield. This is lighter. Easier to use with a bad shoulder." I signed quickly.

Before she could protest I was already gone. And fighting beside some Hephaestus kids. The only person who never left my side was Raph. He was glued to my side, always having my back, which was very sweet, considering my back was invincible. But I really appreciate him being there. We could communicate with little to no words or signs, and if I needed someone else attention, he had a voice.

Annabeth and Percy, raced from one block to the next as Raph and I raced from block to block, the four of us  trying to shore up our defenses. We crossed paths at one point. Percy held out a hand and I slapped it as we ran past. Too many of our friends lay wounded in the streets. Too many were missing.

As the night wore on and the moon got higher, we were backed up foot by foot until we were only a block from the Empire State Building in any direction. At one point Grover was next to me, bonking snake women over the head with his cudgel. Then it was Mr. Miles with his ancient Greek bow. Then he disappeared in the crowd, and it was Thalia at my side, driving the monsters back with the power of her magic shield and slashing her sword. Mrs. O'Leary bounded out of nowhere, picked up a Laistrygonian giant in her mouth, and flung him into the air like a Frisbee.

Annabeth used her invisibility cap to sneak behind the enemy lines. Whenever a monster disintegrated for no apparent reason with a surprised look on his face, I knew Annabeth had been there. Raph would leap into the mist of monsters slashing and hacking making them back up just enough. I sent fireballs and heat waves into the monsters. But with each fireball I could feel my energy drop.

"Hold your lines!" I saw Katie Gardner shouting- she was pointing her finger at a group of monsters, somewhere off to my left.

The problem was there were too few of us to hold anything. The entrance to Olympus was twenty feet behind me. A ring of brave demigods, Hunters, and nature spirits guarded the doors. Percy and I stood in the front, in the middle of what was left of our army. Raph and Annabeth and Thalia stood on our flanks. Percy and I slashed and hacked, destroying everything in our path, but even I was getting tired. Percy and I couldn't be everywhere at once.

Behind the enemy troops, a few blocks to the east, a bright light began to shine. I thought it was the sunrise. Then I realized Kronos was riding toward us on a golden chariot. A dozen Laistrygonian giants bore torches before him. Two Hyperboreans carried his black-and-purple banners. The Titan lord looked fresh and rested, his powers at full strength. He was taking his time advancing, letting Percy and I wear ourselves down.

Annabeth appeared between Percy and I. "We have to fall back to the doorway. Hold it at all costs!"

She was right. I was about to order a retreat when something shook me. Others seemed to hear something. I felt a different vibration in the ground.

I was afraid it might be more enemies, but Kronos's forces looked as confused as we were. Giants lowered their clubs. Dracaenae hissed. Even Kronos's honor guard looked uneasy.

Then, to our left, a hundred monsters threw their hands in the air and turned the opposite way and ran. Kronos's entire northern flank surged forward. I thought we were doomed, but they didn't attack. They ran straight past us and crashed into their southern allies.

I noticed a few campers threw their hands over their ears, but I just looked around in confusion. The air shimmered. In a blur of movement, an entire cavalry appeared as if dropping out of light speed.

A shower of arrows arced over our heads and slammed into the enemy, vaporizing hundreds of demons. But these weren't regular arrows. They reminded me of every single kind of firework you would see on the fourth of July weekend. Some exploded in a shower of colours and clearly some kind of loud noise, as many monsters and Demons threw their hands over their ears and exploded into monster dust. Some had pinwheels attached to them. Others had boxing gloves rather than points.

I looked at Raph, who was whooping and thrust his sword in the air.

"Centaurs!" He signed.

My face made an OH and then I grinned. The Party Pony army exploded into our midst in a riot of colors: tie-dyed shirts, rainbow Afro wigs, oversize sunglasses, and war-painted faces. Some had slogans scrawled across their flanks like HORSEZ PWN or KRONOS SUX.

Hundreds of them filled the entire block. My brain couldn't process everything I saw, but I knew if I were the enemy, I'd be running.

"Percy! Nora!" Chiron looked to be shouting, he was also doing his best to sign while holding a bow. He was dressed in armor from the waist up, his bow in his hand, and he was grinning in satisfaction. "Sorry we're late!"

"DUDE!" Another centaur was clearly yelling, I had to focus on his mouth. "Talk later. WASTE MONSTERS NOW!"

I agreed. He locked and loaded a double-barrel paint gun and blasted an enemy hellhound bright pink. The paint must've been mixed with Celestial bronze dust or something, because as soon as it splattered the hellhound, the monster yelped and dissolved into a pink-and-black puddle.

Everywhere I looked a centaur would raise his arm a weapon in hand and yell something and a whole slew of ventures would raise their weapons and yell. Some kind of sound off.

Raph somehow got a hold of a centuries paint gun and the look of pure extisy in his face as he shout bright blue, green and pink paint balls into the monsters, each time the monsters would explode in a wild splatter of paint.

It was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen. The entire Titan army turned and fled, pushed back by a flood of paintballs, arrows, swords, and NERF baseball bats. The centaurs trampled everything in their path.

Kronos was yelling at his arm, throwing his hands around, trying to keep them where they were supposed to be. Kronos was furious, I could see it. He was in the middle of yelling something at a group of Telekhine when a panicked Hyperborean giant stumbled backward and sat on top of him. The lord of time disappeared under a giant blue butt. I howaled in silent laughter.

Our few remaining campers had a surge of energy. We pushed them for several blocks until Chiron yelled something. I looked quickly at Raph for the interpretation.

"He said: hold. On your promise, hold!"

As much as I didn't want to, he was right. It wasn't easy, but eventually the order got relayed up and down the ranks of centaurs, and they started to pull back, letting the enemy flee.

Percy looked back at the fleeing army.

"Chiron's right." Annabeth signed and spoke. We had slowed our pursuit and we stood shoulder to shoulder.

"If we pursue, we'll get too spread out. We need to regroup." Raph agreed.

"But the enemy-"

"They're not defeated," Annabeth signed still watching the retreating army. "But the dawn is coming."

"We've bought some time." I added.

I could tell Percy didn't like pulling back, but I trusted Chiron and Raph and reluctantly also Annabeth's battle strategy. They were right. I watched as the last of the telkhines scuttled toward the East River. Then reluctantly I turned, Raph shouldered his newly acquired paintball gun and slid his arm over my shoulders together the four of us headed back toward the Empire State Building.
