~26~
The obstacle course had literally just begun and we were already facing our first challenge head on. What you may ask? Trying to squeeze our way out of this tunnel. I wriggled my hands down into my pockets, pressing the meager amount of metal on me into something that I hoped would be useful. The thing I made was essentially a metal wedge to hold out in front of me, using it's shape to squeeze by people.
I took a deep breath and sucked my body in before pressing forward, going as fast as I could. I ignored the annoyed grunts and groans of those around me as I pushed past them, steadily gaining speed as I reached the mouth of the tunnel. Well, until a layer of ice froze my sneakers to the ground. Thanks Todoroki.
I changed the metal wedge into a small hammer and pic, quickly chipping away at the ice before breaking free. Several of my classmates rushed ahead of me only to be stopped by the sudden appearance of several robots. Once again Todoroki used his ice, freezing the robots in place. Kirishima had dashed after him only to be stopped by the now off-balance robots. He burst through the top with a war cry, sending scraps of metal flying from the hole he made. Funny enough, a second boy burst through the robot in a similar fashion, his skin glistening in the sun like polished sheets of metal.
With one last blow, I was free from the ice, now running forward towards the metal lying on the ground. I picked up a large sheet, tucking it under my arm and returning the pic and hammer I made to my pocket for later. With Todoroki around I might need it again.
My lungs ached in protest as I ran, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't find this at least a little fun. I may have already lost sight of some of my classmates, but I wasn't in dead last. I slowed my pace as I approached the next obstacle, peering over the edge of a very daunting cliff.
"This seems like grounds for a law suit..." I mumbled, then shrugging. "Oh well, no time like the present."
The sheet I picked up proved to come in handy, sure it was a pain to lug around, but handy nonetheless. Because time wasn't on my side I didn't bother with anything fancy, simply making a V-shaped pole and then sliding down the metal ropes. I didn't make it all the way across since the incline wasn't very big, so for the rest of the way, I hung upside down and slowly inched across.
With a sigh of relief, I ran off to the next challenge, the distant sound of explosions causing me to wonder if Bakugo was acting up again or if this had something to do with the race. A giant sign reading "Minefield" gave me my answer.
"Too bad I didn't know about this beforehand," I huffed. "If I died at least then my mother could've filed a lawsuit, if she won Kuse would be set for life. But if I was dead then who knows how she'd spend the money."
I shook my head, banishing the depressing thoughts as I shifted my focus to the literal minefield before me. How was I supposed to cross this quickly? I can kind of see where some of the mines are, but spotting each one would take forever. With a shrug, I made all the metal on my person into a pole, roughly five or six feet long and half an inch thick.
Using the pole like a blind person I swept the area in front of me, tapping back and forth several times before moving forward. A few went off, causing me to stumble a bit, but after the first two or three, I was able to adjust and move a bit faster.
At some point Midoriya caused a huge explosion and flew overhead, passing Bakugo and Todoroki who were in the lead. I smiled, happy for my friend.
Determined, I quickened my pace, the stadium roaring ahead of me as the first student crossed the finish line. Thanks to Present Mic's announcement, I knew Izuku had landed himself in first place.
By the time I crossed the finish line a minute or two had passed and I ended in 16th place. Not quite the top ten, but still decent I think. I was quick to meet up with Tenya, Midoriya, and Uraraka, greeting each of them with a friendly pat on the back.
"Hey guys, glad to see you all made it before me," I chuckled. "Seriously, that was crazy, I mean whose idea was it to include a freakin' minefield?!"
"I know," Uraraka agreed. "Makes you want to question how safe U.A is."
"An academy as prestigious as U.A would never put the students in harm's way!" Tenya interjected.
I sighed. "I love you man, but for someone as smart as you are, you sure say some dumb shit. Are you forgetting about last week?"
Tenya grimaced.
"I think he meant that U.A wouldn't intentionally put the students in harm's way," Midoriya said in Tenya's defense. "You can't foresee a villain attack."
"Minefield," I growled. "They made us go through a fucking minefield!"
"You're not going to let this go, are you?" Tenya asked.
"Fuck no, watch me bring this up again if I graduate in three years."
"It wasn't that bad," Uraraka said. "I think you're over-exaggerating."
"You and Tenya don't get to comment on how bad it was," I huffed. "Tenya probably sped past the explosions, and you probably did some kind of floaty shit with your quirk."
Uraraka opened her mouth to interject but was quickly cut off by my howling laughter. Why was I laughing? Excellent question! I glanced to the side for a moment and saw that the jumbo screens were replaying clips from the obstacle course race. I saw some familiar faces flash by, but what got me was a certain glasses-wearing, blue-haired, uptight friend of mine crossing the cliff in the most ridiculous-looking way I've ever seen.
Tenya flinched at my sudden laughter, tilting his head in confusion. Gasping for air between giggles I pointed to one of the jumbo screens, watching as the three of them all turned to look. Uraraka was quick to join me, gasping for breath as she cackled away at Tenya's ridiculousness. Midoriya's reaction was less violent, his shoulders shaking as he suppressed his laughter.
"Quit laughing," Tenya barked, his cheeks tinted red from embarrassment. "It was the quickest way across!"
"... I know..." I wheezed as my laughter began to die down. "But you look like a dork!"
"Well at least I placed in the top ten!" Tenya huffed, crossing his arms.
"Nice comeback, you sure are getting bold," I chuckled. "Too bad that won't work on me since I don't really care."
Uraraka and Midoriya gave Tenya a sympathetic pat on the back, Tenya shook his head at me.
Before our lovely conversation could continue, a loud voice came over the speakers, a woman's voice to be more specific. My eyes landed on the woman with the microphone, who was none other than the always suggestively dressed; Midnight. With a microphone in one hand and a whip in the other, she faced the students.
"Forty-two of you have now passed the finish line, those of you who came after that are disqualified!" Midnight announced the screen behind her lighting up with rankings and names. "Now, the next event will be selected at random on the screen you see here!"
Colours and words flashed on the screen, spinning like a lottery machine.
"The anticipation is killing me!" Midnight squealed as the spinning began to slow.
The words "Calvary Battle," lit up in yellow on the jumbo screen and I slipped my hands into my pockets.
"Calvary battle?" I said with a little too much enthusiasm. "Does this mean fighting?"
Tenya's head swiveled over to me, his complexion looking pale. "Tora, no."
I pulled my hands out of my pockets with a sadistic grin, revealing a set of crudely made brass knuckles.
"Tora, yes."
A/N
I promise I haven't abandoned this book! I had zero motivation to work on this for a while so it was difficult to write anything that I was happy with. But after a lot of revisions and rereading the story so far, I finally have this chapter finished! I hope to start on the next one right away, but truthfully the Sports Festival Arc is my least favourite arc to revisit as I think it wasn't as exciting as the rest of the show. But nonetheless, I hope you guys liked the chapter and are looking forward to the next one! (Also holy crap I didn't realize how many months its been since I updated this, sorry again)
