Heart and soul were a mixture of a person- they were the pieces that could build you up or rip you apart. Heart and soul were the base, the foundation of the structure because it is what drew you apart from the rest. Never had she figured that she could fall so in love with a person that she could recognize their heart and soul with her entire being.
No matter the amount of time spent gazing into his eyes or brushing her hand against the rough skin of his own, she could never get over the intensity of her heart slamming in her chest when she was with him. It was as though she was falling in love with him all over again. He made her feel like a hopeless romantic.
Sitting with him in the middle of nowhere gave her more comfort than she thought possible. Simply enjoying his presence with her knees drawn in her chest and her head resting on his shoulder she felt calm in the silence that the dense forest provided. She felt like she could stay here forever, making up for the time that she had missed out on.
Her fear was still present. It was a constant little shadow in her mind that refused to let her forget the beast that he transformed into- what his friends transformed into. It was something that she could hardy forget, but she was willing to look it over for their own good.
"Why did you run?" Quil questioned her gently, not raising his voice above a whisper.
"It's hard to say- I'm not exactly sure where to start," she admits just as quietly.
"What about the beginning?"
Staring ahead, she could still make out the images that danced before her eyes. The girl among wolves. "It's complicated. I don't think I've even heard the whole story."
He was silent, brows furrowed as he thought it over. She couldn't help but admire how his face- while still slightly pudgy- was angular and smooth, his jaw a little uneven but still a perfect fit for her petite, dainty hands.
"Do you think Billy will talk about it at the bonfire?"
Her head lifted form his shoulder as she looked at him carefully. "Bonfire? What bonfire?"
"It's actually a council meeting but the entire pack goes. It's my first time hearing the tribal stories," he explained. "You are going to be there, right? You're one of us now."
She could feel her heart clench in her chest, unsure of what to tell him. She didn't know what to do, the idea of him thinking that she was one of them was heartwarming but she didn't want to consider herself one of them. Even though she wanted to be with him, she didn't love the idea of being the wolf girl.
In her perfect world, she would leave all of this. She would travel with Alice and Jasper, dragging Quil with her when she could. She would spend as much time with Bella as possible instead of watching her sister be pulled in different directions by two boys.
She knew that it wasn't meant to be like that. Love wasn't meant to be a chore. With Quil it was as easy as breathing.
"I have faced death, and grief over and over since returning home to Forks. I have nearly died more times than acceptable and face loss more times than I care to explain," she stressed. "Everyone makes it out like I have to pick a side. I don't have to deicide between them and you. So no, I'm not one of them and I'm not one of you. I'm me, just me."
Quil brushed a strand of her hair behind her ear and gave her a small smile. "I like just you, just you will always be more than enough for me."
She smiled up at him, her bottom lip pulling between her teeth as she pressed her forehead against his. "I don't know if I can go to the bonfire. It depends on Alice and Bella."
"Come." His warmth breath fanned against her face. "I really want you to be there."
"I- I'm not sure if I can," she stammered. Her gaze cut to his lips and back to his eyes. Sometimes eye contact is way more intimae than words could ever be. His eyes were beautiful pools, endless depths that she finds herself falling into every time without end.
His jaw ticked. "Why is it up to someone else? Why can't you decide on your own?"
"it's not that I can't decide on my own, love," Her fingers brush the against his desperate to make him understand. "I don't trust myself to make decisions when I can hardly think clearly. Most of the time it's like my head is spinning, words merging into one and I can't trust myself to do the right thing."
"What about now?"
"Now? Now everything is too clear, my mind is steady and I don't trust that either," she admits.
He flipped one on his hands over, taking one of hers and lacing their fingers together. His hand was rough, callouses placed in random places that felt right against her smooth skin. "Do you trust me?"
Sparks flew high around the flames, dancing in the wind that blew across the water. The fire crackled, a mere whisper among the quiet chatter of the group that surrounded her. She sat further away from the others, but still close to the fire. In the sand between Quil's legs an leaning against a long, she sat closest to the heat caging herself in and away from the cold.
She refused to meet anyone's eyes, unsure as to why she was here in the first place. Lynn was across to her side, draped across Andy's lap lazily with her legs resting on Leah. It seemed like the two shifters decided to stick to her side no matter how many times Quil would send glares in their direction.
Across from her, huddled together, was Bella and Jacob whispering to each other. They looked as though they belong among the couples.
At the front, Sam sat with Billy Black, Sue Clearwater, and Quil's grandfather- the council heads. She wondered why she never suspected Sam to be part of the council. To her he was just a mean wolf that she wold never really see eye to eye with.
"The Quileute's have been a small people from the beginning," Billy said. His voice was the same as earlier, strong, and steady as it called to her- pulling her eyes shut. "With permission, the true reason for how we came to be will be told tonight."
She felt a nudge against her knee and her eyes snapped open to find everyone focused to her. Billy tilted his head, holding his hand out to her in encouragement. She took it with a sigh.
"Valerians are an old species," Billy tells the group as Alice stood their awkwardly. "Though, we apparently do not have the right information on what they can do."
Her breathing grew quick as they all looked to her expectantly. Her heart raced and she felt dizzy as her hands shook uncontrollably at her sides. Bella looked ready to join her but Lynn beat her to it, shoving Quil out the way and gripping Andy's hand.
"Breathe," the shifter whispered.
Andy gulped audibly. "Valerians are an old species, hunted down until they were few. We're all different, given different abilities but there are two that we all possess- healing."
She moved to sit down but Lynn tugged her back when Billy gave her and expectant look. She sighed, rushing through the rest of her words. "They're like a sponge. Sometimes people subconsciously project their negative emotions- hate, pain, anger. Valerians absorb all of that like a sponge, and feel it all. They fell every negative thing that they take from others."
"They heal people- physically and mentally. A glow surrounds their hands, either silver or golden, and physical healing is a lot harder than mental without a doubt," Bella adds, growing uneasy at her sister's discomfort. "Anything else?"
"What are your individual abilities, Andrea?" Old Quil inquired, speaking for the first time.
She fidgeted with the bottom of her sweater, self-conscious. "I- I'm no exactly sure. I can do some things but I only know one actual ability but it all depends on who I bond to- link myself to. I can take away Bella's pain almost like it's second nature and I can remove my scent when around the Cullen's-"
"Remove your scent?" Quil growled.
"Yes, my presence does not bother them in the slightest and in other situations I can make myself smell extremely potent."
"Like when you acted like a little sacrificial lamb for that redheaded leech?" Paul snapped.
Her eyebrows furrowed as she turned to glare at him. "Yeah, the time I decided to let myself get hurt so you and the other mutts could make it in time to catch her but instead you let a pissing contest get in the way. The same time I got a shit ton of information from her while you are all still running around chasing your own tail."
Paul stood to his feet, the others intaking a sharp breath at her casual use of the insult. "I was sticking to the treaty, he's the one that stepped onto our land," he snarled at her.
His anger hit her full force and she stumbled back. It burned white hot in her veins and she used it to her advantage, glaring at him over the fire. "You were acting like a territorial dog and let a threat slip through your paws. So be a goo boy and sit down," she sneered. Lost in the boys anger she spat out.
Her chest heaved with contained rage, feeding off the boy that stared her own through the flames. She felt like the fire, heat radiating from her skin as she shook with a burning spark in her veins. She knew that the pack affected her different than others, that it could be overbearing and completely influential. She found little comfort in the control that they held over her, like a switch.
From the corner of her eye, she could see people moving to make there way to her hesitantly, her sister the only one brave enough to walk directly to her side. With careful hands, Bella took a hold of her shoulders and forced Andy to look into her eyes. Different shades of brown met in a conflicting storm of emotions. Rage burned in one, love and concern in the other.
"Why don't we do that breathing thing where we clear our head, yeah?" Bella suggests.
Rolling her eyes in frustration, she let her squeezed her lids shut in concentration accompanied by a deep breath. The feeling of clearing her head of foreign emotions was growing all too familiar. It was soothing as she drew it all away, vacuuming the anger away limb from limb until she felt a cold wash over her. Andy was quick to lock the rage into a corner deep in her mind.
"Sorry," she mumbled, refusing to open her eyes. "What was I saying?"
"Abilities," Bella murmured.
"I'm not sure why- Jasper thinks it's some way of helping me cope- but I'm also an empath," Andy said. "I can feel other emotions coming from all of you but I can choose to ignore them as long as they aren't negative. I can also make another person feel something but I'm not very good at that yet."
"You're awful at it," Bella quipped.
Giggling softly, her eyes flicker open and to her sister standing at her side. She elbowed her sister playfully, grumbling something about her being annoying.
"Is that all young one?" Old Quil eyed her knowingly.
Giving the man a strained smile, she asked, "Should there be more?"
His smile id little to reassure her.
