It was dark and cold, numb, and empty. Everything felt grey, it was grey and she was lost in a broken nothingness. She was trapped in the tide, her mind puling her further and further under. Her lungs contracted, squeezing and she woke with a jolt. Her head swam as millions of thoughts rushed to the surface.

Pain was the most prominent. Her muscles were strained, bones aching; even her skin felt like rubber. It was all hazy, a thin veil that shrouded her from consciousness. Pain drove her to the surface, chasing her with its hackles raised. She felt it flare in her thigh, an excruciating torture that increased with every beat of her heart.

Emotions were present, a worthy rival to the pain of her body. She could sense them, a plethora of emotions that were assaulting her senses from all over. Grief and heartbreak, suffering, and worry, came from all different angles and in all different degrees. It made little sense to her, how these things could be present at once, where could she have been to have encountered such feelings.

The last events she remembered were foggy, warped to fit something that her mind could handle. There was fire, an indescribable heat that tore at her. There was death grips and firm hands, purple skin mixed with ivory. It came in flashes, silver and white, and red. There was an overwhelming amount of red and Andy really hated the colour.

Red meant nothing but pain and heartbreak. It was the colour of blood, thick and deadly. Red was her pale skin when struck. Red was the burning fire in her veins in moments of utter torment. Red was Lynn the moment she turned to anger and hate.

Through the haze of her mind, she pushed through the red and grey. She reached, then reached some more for something to grasp onto. A precipice loomed above her, mocking her because no matter how hard she tried, reality and escape could not be reached.

A low beeping echoed around her, it was constant and repetitive. Hearing it, she realized that it matched her heart beat. The beeping was precise, counting and charting the sign of her life. It was reassuring for her to hear how steady it was, even if it was somewhat distant. It was then hat she realized that while trapped, she must have been in the hospital or a hospital like setting.

Counting the continuous beeps that had her annoyance spiking with each passing second, she felt a jolt of energy. It began in her hands, the dreaded shaking that haunted her started up with small tremors. Reality came rushing her way, knowledge of pain and wolves bombarded her. She would never be able to forget the pain she had felt when her friend transformed into claws and rusty fur.

In the light that assaulted her through closed eyelids, she realized how badly she missed the dark. In the dark it was empty, she was numb. She hadn't felt so free of emotions since Alice had snapped her out of the pit that she had found herself in before Victoria showed her flaming hair. It was now, in a moment of waking, that she realized how sad she truly was.

Everything was changing so fast, fluctuating so quickly that she couldn't keep up with the tides. She felt out of space, out of time with no anchor to keep her grounded. She loved a boy whom she feared more than she could comprehend. She hated his friends, and was accidentally attacked by her own. She missed her sister and her mother. She missed the simplicity of everything before she knew that the tribal wolves existed.

"Andy? Oh, thank god you're awake!"

Squinting through the light, she found her sister leaning over her with sorrowful eyes. She could feel the guilt and anxiety coming off her sister in waves.

"What?" Andy croaked out.

Bella sniffled as she knelt to the floor and gently brush a piece of hair from her face. "There was so much blood when you were wheeled in that I wasn't sure what to think. They were so flustered, Jake said they didn't even know you were actually in LaPush until they heard you screaming."

"Screaming?"

"Yes, screaming. He said that they heard it echoing in the trees reaching all the way to Emily's. Quil went crazy on them, attacking anyone that tried to get in his way of getting to you. We all thought that Alice was going to break the treaty when I got the call, she was already wearing the floors thin with all the pacing she was doing," Bella explained softly. "Carlisle had to set you up in her room, she wouldn't let you out of her sight."

She pushed herself up into a sitting position, groaning when her leg screamed in protest. The bed was extremely comfortable, hint enough that she was not in her own bed. The lights were dimmed down, medical supplies scattered around in a scary organized fashion.

"Where is everyone?" she questioned.

"The boys went out hunting with Edward when you were brought in. Carlisle wasn't certain if you were going to be capable of keeping yourself scent free, so Alice chased them away," Bella told her. "Rose is downstairs. We had finally just convinced Alice and Esme to go hunt. Carlisle's at work."

Nodding, she began to get ready to stand up. Her leg hurt more than anything, but the rest of her aches and pains were manageable. It was surprising, but she figured it had something to do with Alice for some reason.

"Why are you here? I figured you would use this time to see Jacob." Andy oddly didn't feel bitter about it, she just accepted it.

"Wha- why would I be with Jake? I was here the entire time waiting for you to get better," the eldest sister argued. She scooted closer, resting her head on her hand.

"So, you didn't see him at all?" she pushed.

"Well I did see him when she got to the treaty line, and I spoke to him on the phone," the girl admits. "Or, well, threatened him on the phone."

She laughed softly, eyes staying cast down. She couldn't bring herself to trust her sister completely, but it would have to do for the moment.

"What happened? Did they say?"

"They kept saying something about and accident and how it was Emily all over again. They said that Lynn didn't mean it, that she kept fighting them so she could follow you to the border." Bella played with her sister hair, twirling it, and brushing it distractedly. "I'm really sorry, but she clawed your leg. It wasn't as bad as it could've been though, it was only a first shift."

Andy quickly picked up the blanket and whimpered softly at the sight of her leg. It was bandaged lightly, the atrocious thing barely visible. It was jagged, a ghastly thing that was raised and a horrendous red that only made her skin look ashen.

"Why does this always happen to me?" Andy felt the tears slip down her cheeks. "I can't leave the house without getting some disgusting new injury that's going to scar me for life."

"Don't you dare say that," Rosalie spat as she waltzed into the room. "You're beautiful, much more beautiful than most anyone I've ever met. The person that manages to catch your heart will be the luckiest person alive."

"I'll carry this ugly thing forever. All these emotional and physical scars that are going to haunt me every moment of my existence," she cried.

"You truly are beautiful, Ands. Any person with two eyes can see that," Bella soothed. She looked to the blonde was back up and the vampires sat on the bed next to the girl tracing the various scars that littered her body.

"Look at these, not one person can claim to have these scars and live to tell the tale," Rosalie whispered sincerely. "You have the strongest heart I've ever seen."

"Anything to miss a party, right? Why am I not surprised?" Alice scolded. "You're never leaving my sight again, and I mean it this time."

The pixie like vampire came gliding into the room, a rare scowl on her face. She flit to her side immediately. Hands zooming over her rapidly as she checked the young human over for injuries.

"You said nothing would happen," Andy stated grumpily.

"Things change, you just disappeared. I thought one of the wolves payed a visit," the vampire countered.

"A wolf did pay a visit. My friend turned into a giant wolf only a few feet away from me."

"Is that an attitude I detect?"

Both girls looked towards the doors at the southern boy that stood tall in the entrance. He looked windswept, eyes an alluring topaz.

"Allie's being mean," Andy complained immediately. "I didn't even do anything wrong!"

He chuckled, blond locks falling into his face as he smiled. "Sounds like it to me little lady."

Alice scoffed, eyeing the two in playful anger before leaving the room. A comfortable silence grew, each waiting for the other to say what's on their mind.

"Andy, can you tell me how your emotions have been?" he began cautiously.

She was silent for a moment as she collected her thoughts. "It's rather bizarre, I've been meaning to say something to you about it," Andy mumbled. She fumbled with the blanket that covered her legs, eyes narrowed on her trembling fingers. "It's like one minute everything is normal and exactly how it used to be, I take their emotions and feel them how they're meant to be felt. Then I'll suddenly feel numb, like there are no emotions and sentiments don't exist. Sometimes, just sometimes, everything is heightened and extreme. I don't understand what's happening."

"I was with two wolves when they shifted for the first time, and each occurrence I'd rather have died it was so terrible," she continued. "I don't want it to happen again, please help me."

She peered at him through wet lashes, not having realized that she had started to cry. He had his eyes narrowed, studying her. Jasper stepped further into the room, standing tall at the end of the bed.

"I have a theory on what is occurring. It is rare that it occurs among your kind because it only makes your life that much more difficult," he spoke lowly as he put his thoughts into words. "To coexist as one is incredible, to have this ability as a valerian will help keep you healthy."

"Wha-"

"Empathic. I believe that you're an empath, like I am."

Andy gaped at him. Thoughts flooded her but none were within grasp long enough to decipher. Unintelligible words slipped part her lips in an attempt to express how she felt but even that she didn't know exactly.

"What? What exactly id the difference?" she inquired.

He went to answer, but Alice beat him to it. "Empaths can influence the emotions of other as long as they're near the person. A valerian takes away negative feelings, sort of sucking them into themselves, but also healing physically and mentally by using their own energy. As both, you won't need to also take on a person's emotions, you can simply influence them," her voice poured into the room. "Make sense? We can discuss it later, right now we have more important things."

"More important things?" Andy parroted.

"Yes, like your birthday present!" Bursting into the room, the vampire carried a rather large box in her arms. She moved to the human's side and placed it onto her lap. "Open it!"

Excitedly, she lifted the lid off and shrieked happily at the box's contents. Inside sat a tiny ball of fur with wide eyes. It was precious with it's little paws and whispers. She picked it up carefully, cradling the tiny kitten to her chest. The animal simply stared up at her, assessing her before meowing and moving into her hands. Andy awed and snuggled the kitten closer.

"He's a boy," Jasper told her. "and he still needs a name."

"Mr. Darcy." The kitten meowed.
