Ch. 8: Voodoo In My Blood
Marcel and I were updating our vampires about the status of the Hollow in Marcel's apartment.
"We got one priority today, keep the Hollow from getting her hands on the last two bones," I told them. "The Mikaelsons got one, the Hollow's got another. Which is why we're gonna check with every antique dealer, junk collector, and local historian until we control the final pieces. Now, if this vile spirit gets her hands on the bones first, she'll be impossible to kill."
"This is old magic," Marcel told them. "The covens can't stop it. But that is our city. All right? We protect it, no matter what we got to do or who we got to kill. We've had five years of peace, and we intend to keep it that way, but we need your help. All right? Now get out there. Go get 'em."
There was indistinct chatter as the vampires left to go do as told.
I turned to Marcel. "I'm sure our men will find the bones. By compulsion or alternative forms of persuasion."
"Of course," Marcel answered. "Just takes time."
Elijah walked in. "Of which we have none."
We turned to face Elijah.
"The hell are you doing here?" Marcel asked.
"We need to talk," Elijah told us.
I sighed. "Make it quick."
"I need your help," Elijah told us. "Meeting an expert shortly. He'll be coming by way of Mystic Falls, carrying one of the bones and the means to find another. Between the four of us, we should have those remains by sundown."
"Why should I trust you?" Marcel asked. "I know that you can trust Noah here because he doesn't have the power to kill you, but why would you trust me?"
"I don't," Elijah told him. "But why should we let old grievances hinder our common goal?" He sat down in a chair. "Here's a proposal." He took out a knife, placing it on the table. "You come with me, I surrender the only weapon that can take your life."
Marcel and I were both surprised.
****
We got to Jack's Bar-B-Q Shack in Marcel's car, opening the butterfly doors, getting out.
"Good thing we brought the German sports car," Elijah told us sarcastically.
"Says the man in the $5,000 suit," I replied.
"Nine, if we're counting," Elijah corrected. "I'm not a barbarian."
We reached an outdoor table, facing each other on either side of it.
"All right, look, your expert better pay off," I told him. "Otherwise, we're wasting time that we don't have."
"See, that's so very hurtful, Noah, and here I thought we were having a marvelous galactic adventure together," Elijah told me sarcastically.
"You think you're real cute, don't you?" I asked, sitting down. "Now, see, you're always working some angle to protect your family. At least Klaus is up front about it, but not you with your manners and your suits and your handkerchiefs."
Marcel sat down.
'What do you want me to do?" Elijah asked. Marcel and I didn't answer. Elijah sat down, whispering. "We're under threat."
"I know that, and I know how you handle threats," Marcel told him. "You made that clear when you tore my heart out five years ago. And just so we're clear now, there's no way I will ever forgive you for that."
"I don't expect you to," Elijah told him. "I certainly never forgave myself."
Marcel and I were surprised by that admission, realizing that Elijah felt more regret and sorrow for what he did than he let on.
****
We found Elijah's expert named Alaric in the middle of the road.
Alaric's car was burned to a crisp. Alaric was standing nearby, looking around.
We pulled up in Marcel's car. Alaric waved as we got out to walk closer.
"Oh, thanks for coming," Alaric told us. "Would have been a long walk back to Mystic Falls."
I looked at Elijah. "Don't tell me this is your expert." Elijah didn't answer. "So what happened?"
"Well, aside for forfeiting my lease, I blew up one of those vampire-witch combos when she tried to take the bone," Alaric answered.
"What did she look like?" Elijah asked.
Alaric sighed. "Oh. Brunette, gorgeous, lace top. Black jacket, glowing blue eyes."
Marcel realized, frustrated. "Sofya. The Hollow's inside Sofya, probably using her."
"Or using all of us," I told them.
"Oh, we got to find a way to save her," Marcel told us.
"Or put her out of her misery," Elijah told us.
Marcel turned to Elijah incredulously. "I'm sorry. What? Did I hear that right? Oh, that's right. That is the Mikaelson way, isn't it? I mean, why try to save someone when you can just kill them?"
"Hey, I love a good grudge just as much as the next guy, but do you want to stand around whining about a missing finger bone, or do you want to talk about a ledger that points us to where the other bones might be?" Alaric asked. "I studied the records, and I got a family name. Del Robles. Bloodline ends ten years ago, and according to the Lockwood records, somebody in that family is buried with one of those mystical bones."
"Where?" I asked.
"Black Clay Cemetery in the Treme," Alaric answered.
"Well, Sofya has a head start," Elijah told us, turning to the car.
I held out a hand to stop him. "Hey, wait, wait, wait, wait. That cemetery was redeployed. Too much flooding. Now the bodies were moved to two separate locales. The Haves and the Have Nots."
"Del Robles were aristocracy," Elijah told us.
"Okay, it means their crypt was moved to St. Ailbhe Cemetery," I told them.
Marcel, Elijah and I headed toward the car.
Alaric started to follow, limping slightly from being attacked. "Yeah, that sounds like fun, but on the way, can you drop me off at the ER? Thanks."
****
We got to St. Ailbhe Cemetery, the Del Robles tomb. We walked into the tomb, looking for the last bone.
"Here's the Del Robles crypt," I told them. "Looks like, given the body count, we're gonna have to check thousands of bones." I read an inscription on the door that was in a different language, reading it quietly to myself, which said, 'Nuestro corazon siempre va a defender esta tierra'. I translated it out loud. "'Our hearts will always defend this land.' I think it's some kind of clue."
"Let's get to work," Elijah told us.
We walked inside.
****
Marcel, Elijah and I were searching the graves for the last bone that the Hollow needed.
Elijah was standing at a grave. "Marcel. Noah." Marcel and I walked closer. "Olivia Tierra Del Robles. Tierra, of course, means land. As in all the hearts will defend it."
I nodded in agreement. "Mm. Watch yourselves." Elijah and Marcel backed away slightly. I plunged my hand through the grave's headstone, tearing it down to reveal a large bone inside, and only that bone. "And there's our bone."
Marcel grabbed the bone, starting to walk away.
Elijah held out a hand to stop him, snapping his fingers. "Now give it to me."
"Yeah, I don't think so," Marcel told him.
"I'm not gonna ask you again," Elijah told him.
"You have one of the bones already," Marcel told him. "The smart play would be to keep them divided, yet still in the hands of allies you trust. So I guess you're just gonna have to trust us, Elijah."
Elijah looked at Marcel seriously for a moment, rushing toward him, pushing him against the wall, drawing the knife that could supposedly kill him, raising it threateningly. "I don't have to trust anyone."
"Careful, Elijah," I told him. "Your true colors are starting to show. Yeah. You may talk a big game, but when it comes down to it, you'll always be a poster boy for violence first. Always and forever."
Elijah knew that I was right, and not liking that he was acting out of violence, letting Marcel go, lowering the knife.
We heard footsteps approaching from outside, turning toward the door.
Sofya/The Hollow walked in, smirking in amusement. "You men and your silly posturing. You should know better. After all, your prize already belongs to me."
****
Elijah, Marcel and I were still facing off with the Hollow.
Marcel stepped cllser carefully, ignoring the Hollow completely in an attempt to get through to the host, his girlfriend. "Sofya, I know you're still in there."
"She is," Sofya/The Hollow told him. "Strong soul rattling around in a dying shell. But like all the rest of you, she's nothing compared to me. One last time. Give me what I seek."
"Why don't you come get it?" I asked.
"Fair enough," Sofya/The Hollow told us. "So long as you're prepared to die." She waved her hand, using magic to throw Elijah and me into the walls, letting us fall. Marcel rushed toward Sofya/The Hollow, but she merely grabbed him by the throat, throwing him into the wall, making him fall and drop the bone. "Now the game comes to an end."
Hayley appeared in front of Sofya/The Hollow, shaking her head. "Not just yet."
****
Hayley was still facing off with Sofya/The Hollow, using a knife to cut into her hand and draw blood, coating it on the knife, rushing toward Sofya/The Hollow to stab her with the knife coated in her blood, making her gasp and groan in pain and turn away. She turned away, walking past Marcel, Elijah, and me, who were still on the floor. "Hurts, huh? My blood?"
Marcel, Elijah and I were getting up to stand with Hayley against the Hollow.
Sofya/The Hollow chuckled, turning to face us, waving her arms down, using magic to throw the four of us to the floor. "Whoever told you how to destroy me left a little something out. Trapping me requires the release of power. The kind you get when you sacrifice the life of an immortal." She stood over us menacingly. "Tell me, which of you will die to stop me?"
Elijah, Hayley, Marcel and I struggled to get up. Sofya/The Hollow waved her hands toward the floor to magically push us down again, pinning us to the floor.
I glared up at her. "No one is dying today."
"Well, then I guess we're done here," Sofya/The Hollow told us, grabbing the bone from the floor, rushing out of the tomb, leaving and releasing us from her magic.
Marcel, Elijah and I stood.
Elijah walked over to Hayley to help her up. "You okay?"
"I think someone is going to die," Hayley told us. "Davina has Klaus."
Marcel looked at her in shock. "Wait. Davina?"
"The Ancestors need a sacrifice to put the Hollow down for good," I told them.
"Davina will not hesitate," Elijah told us.
We looked at each other in worry.
****
Marcel, Hayley, Elijah and I walked into the foyer of the church, about to walk into the sanctuary.
Hayley stopped, turning to Elijah. "You should wait here. She still blames the Mikaelsons for what happened. You'll just make it worse."
Hayley, Marcel and I walked into the sanctuary of the church, seeing that Klaus was in a salt circle on the floor, seemingly alone in the boundary spell.
I looked around. "Davina?"
Davina appeared in the salt circle next to Klaus. "Don't try to stop me, Marcel. Noah, if I don't kill Klaus, if I don't put down the Hollow, she'll come for all of you. She'll burn the entire city."
Hayley walked closer. "Davina, please."
I held out an arm to stop Hayley, walking closer to Davina. "D. There's got to be another way."
Davina shook her head. "No. I was just waiting for the weapon, but now that you're here... I'm sorry." She used magic to drag Marcel closer, into the boundary spell that weakened him, instantly. "But you need to kill him."
Marcel shook his head. "No, Davina."
"He's lived ten lifetimes, that's more than enough," Davina told us.
Hayley walked closer worriedly, but she couldn't walk into the salt circle due to the boundary spell. "No. He's Hope's father."
"She'll still have you," Davina told her. "But if we don't stop the Hollow, then Hope will die." I couldn't get past the boundary spell. "You can save her, Marcel. And everyone in New Orleans."
Elijah walked in, looking at Davina. "Stop this. This is about your grievances with me."
Davina glared at Elijah in hate. "This has nothing to do with you. This is about a sacrifice. One death for the greater good."
"Then take me," Elijah told her.
Hayley looked at him in worry, grabbing his arm. "Elijah, no."
Elijah pulled his arm away, looking at Davina. "If indeed there is no other way, then end this now."
Davina seemed to be considering it.
I looked between them. "No. No. No, nobody's dying today."
"Then I'll do it myself," Davina told us, raising her hand toward Marcel, using magic to force him to his knees.
"No!" Elijah told her.
"Davina..." Marcel trailed off.
Davina looked cold and detached as she used magic to make Marcel transform, making his eyes glow red and his fangs come out, making him arch back slightly to look at the ceiling in agony.
"Davina!" I told her.
Davina used magic to make Marcel double over in an attempt to make him bite Klaus to kill him, but Marcel was fighting back, groaning in pain, doing everything he could not to bite Klaus. So instead, Davina used magic to siphon the venom from Marcel's fangs, making it fall to the floor in a puddle, causing sizzling sounds. She finally released Marcel from her magic to focus on magically moving his venom closer to Klaus over the floor in an attempt to poison him and kill him.
Marcel was breathing heavily in agony. "Davina, please."
"You don't have to do this," Hayley told her.
"I'm sorry," Davina told us. "It's the only way."
We couldn't do anything to stop Davina from magically moving Marcel's venom across the floor, nearly touching Klaus' hand.
We heard Hope's angry voice. "No!" We turned to see that Hope had appeared behind us. Hope looked at Davina angrily. "You promised to help, but you're not helping. You're hurting us, and I won't let you."
Hope raised her hand in a fist toward Davina, easily using magic to dispell the boundary, breaking the salt line with a gust of wind, magically sending Davina back into the Ancestral Plane, making her disappear so that she wouldn't kill Klaus. She lowered her hand, making the magical wind disappear.
I was in shock to see Hope's power like this, while Hayley and Elijah looked proud.
Klaus awakened with a soft inhale of breath. He sat up, looking around.
Hope instantly ran past Elijah, Hayley, Marcel and me, straight into Klaus's arms in relief. Klaus returned the embrace while she held him tightly, unwilling to let him go.
I understood why Davina had tried to do that, because she was trying to save us. And it was the exact thing that the Mikaelsons had done to her five years ago, so it could have been a little bit about revenge, but mostly trying to save us. Yet, I understood that Hope didn't want to lose her dad after just getting him back.
I could see both sides, and I understood both sides, but I wasn't going to pick a side when I knew that we all had to work together to defeat the Hollow before someone else got hurt or killed.
