Four II
This would be the first night attempting to sleep knowing Zeke was watching me. I assumed he was anyways. I was laying down on my back, hands resting on my belly. I was exhausted, but sleep felt impossible.
"Are you there?" I whispered. I didn't need to whisper; Amanda was definitely asleep but it felt appropriate.
"Yeah, I'm here." He showed up, standing at the foot of my bed. I jumped up, heart racing.
"Jesus, you mind not standing there like the boogeyman?"
"Where would have preferred I show up, next to you in bed?"
He had a point. I arranged myself to sit up in bed. The lights were off but there was still a bit of light in the room. My sleep mask was on my forehead, ready for use. He didn't move from the foot of the bed, and even though threatening, I didn't really want him to come closer.
"This ghost thing isn't working for me." I tucked my hairs behind my ears, but the sleeping mask band was in the way. I gave up on it. I started playing with my nails.
"I don't really have an option here. I have to watch over you. I can't risk things getting out of hand."
"No, I mean. I don't like that I can't see you but you can see me. I want to know where your eyes are and if you're turning around when I change. How am I guaranteed you aren't peeping on me when I go to the washroom? How do I know you are really there and not just my imagination?"
He walked around the bed and came to my side. He sat on the edge.
"You want to see me?" He was wearing what he had been wearing since I saw him. I wondered if angels could change clothes. I knew he could take off his shirt.
"I don't want to be haunted!" I was whisper yelling; he was talking in a normal voice. I wondered if maybe he could choose to be seen or heard by anyone else.
"So, you want me to be a real person in your life. That follows you everywhere."
"I don't want you to follow me everywhere. That's kind of the point. What if I wanted to masturbate right now? You couldn't leave?"
Zeke froze, looking just left of my face. It didn't look like he was even breathing. Did he need to breathe?
"...I guess I could give you some privacy. But I would be guarding the door. And I'm taking your cellphone." He still wasn't looking at me now.
"You can make other people forget, right? If I ever tell anyone you can work your magic. You really can't give me privacy?" Zeke stood and started pacing around my room.
"I mean... I think it's okay? What would Gabe say? Do I even ask about this or was this expected of me? Am I even allowed to watch her touch herself? Would I get in trouble for watching or for leaving her alone? Which one would get me in more trouble?" He was talking to himself, hand on chin. He looked really human. I always thought that biblical angels were like these crazy, covered in a thousand eyes, with four sets of wings, ethereal beings. But he really looked like any other guy. He didn't even act all fancy like his brother.
"Hey, man... you could be like my friend. I could tell Amanda that you were cool and you can come over and befriend her properly. And she could confirm you're a real person."
He stopped. He looked up at me but didn't move closer.
"I still have you watch you. You want me to be in this form all the time?" I grabbed my knees to my chest.
"Not all the time. But when I need to confirm that you aren't looking at me." Earlier today when I went to the washroom, I was miserable. I can't know the extent of his perving if he's a ghost.
"So, you want to act like the date went well?"
"Yeah. I guess."
"So, we're dating now?"
"No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Not what I was talking about." I shook my head aggressively.
"That's the most logical reason I would enter and exit your life swiftly. It would be a perfect excuse for me to stay late nights or to take you away if need be." He started pacing again.
"It makes so much sense. Am I allowed to do this? I'm not actually dating her." He went back to muttering to himself. I pulled the grey comforter up to my chin. I didn't know how long this thing was going to last but he had a point.
"Am I really going to forget all of this?"
He stops, turns to me.
"Yeah, of course. We might not actually wipe everything just because I've already been in so many of your thoughts. But you'll forget I was an angel." The sleeping mask fell off my forehead onto my nose.
"I think that's my cue?" I pushed it back up and yawned.
"If you have to watch me tonight, can you not actually look at me? Can you just stay in the room?" He went to sit on the edge of my bed again.
"I can lay down on the floor and close my eyes if you like. Do you want to see me when you wake up?"
"Yeah." He laid down on the floor, out of sight. I couldn't tell how he was laying, or if his eyes were closed, but I was glad I couldn't see him but simultaneously knew where he was.
"Goodnight." I put the mask over my eyes and turned to my side.
"Goodnight."
