Chapter Twenty-One; It's A Shame
That night, the restaurant was more packed than usual. Once again, they were short on staff, so Janelle was running all over, doing various different jobs that wouldn't get done unless she did them. By the time eight came around, people were beginning to leave, and only a couple of patrons remained.
Janelle made her way into the kitchen, looking at the sink, which was overflowing with dirty dishes that weren't being washed by anyone.
I swear, sometimes it feels like I'm the only one working here, she thought, huffing as she walked over to the sink, reaching over and grabbing the pair of yellow rubber gloves that sat beside it. She turned on the sink, beginning to wash some of the plates that rested atop of the piles of dishes. She decided that washing these dishes would be how she spent the next hour until Joshua got there. Surely some of the other waitresses or waiters could pick up the slack and do the jobs that Janelle typically did, such as cleaning the floors and tables.
For the next hour, Janelle cleaned every plate, bowl, and piece of silverware in the sink, as well as dry and put them away. Only, she realised that more than an hour had passed, and it was already nine-thirty.
She looked at the clock confusedly. How could that be? Joshua would've come to get her by now, like he always did. Where was he?
She decided that the clock had to be fast; Joshua was never late, especially for her. She pulled her phone out of the pocket of her apron, and much to her dismay, it was in fact, past nine-thirty.
"No.." she mumbled to herself as she tore off her apron, kicking off the high heels that had made her feet sore all day. She made her way to the break room, quickly going over and opening her locker, which she kept her uniforms in. She tossed the apron and high heels in, before grabbing her sneakers, slipping them on. Afterwords, She grabbed her purse and closed the door to her locker.
She slid her phone into the pocket of her jeans as she jogged out of the break room, making her way outside. She looked around, praying that she'd spot Joshua waiting for her in his parked Mustang. However he was nowhere to be seen.
She swallowed, letting out a long sigh.
It's okay, she told herself. He's probably only fallen asleep. You can walk home, no big deal.
She looked around, biting her lip. It was dark, but she'd have to walk home by herself, anyway. She pretended that it didn't bother her. Joshua was allowed to be late for once in his life, wasn't he?
She began to walk home, hugging her purse to her side nervously as as she made her way through the dark. This was one of the times that she was glad she wasn't too far from work.
She began to let her mind wander as she walked, Remembering how Ryan had given her a ride to work earlier. Perhaps if she had called him he would've driven her home, too?
No, she thought to herself. Then Joshua would find out about him. He wouldn't be happy about it, either.
Besides, Ryan was probably busy, or asleep, for all she knew. He'd be going out of his way to drive her down only a few miles.
By the time Janelle finally made it to her apartment complex, she was tired, a little chilled, and her feet were sore; Not to mention how she was jumpy from being alone in the dark.
She ran up to the door, opening it and quickly heading inside as if someone was chasing her, before composing herself, stepping up the stairs to the second level. She walked over to the door to their apartment, grabbing her keys which hung on a keychain on her purse. She unlocked the door, before opening it up, stepping inside. She tossed her purse down, immediately toeing off her sneakers by the door.
"Joshua, I'm home." She called tiredly, running her hand through her hair and taking out the hair band, letting the strands fall messily on her head.
She heard the bedroom door open and close, before Joshua stepped into the room, only wearing a pair of boxers. His hair was tousled, and his cheeks were a light shade of pink.
Janelle stood staring at him for a moment in confusion, before deciding that, like she had thought before, he had only fallen asleep.
"You're already home?" He asked in a slightly scratchy voice.
"Well, Yeah," she mumbled. "It's already almost ten."
He looked up at the clock, before biting his lip. "Damn it." He breathed.
"It's really fine." Janelle was quick to let him know she wasn't upset with him. "I really needed a walk, anyways."
"Joshua?" She heard another voice ask.
Before she had a moment to comprehend it, another woman walked into the room, wrapped in a blanket.
Janelle's eyes widened as she felt her stomach drop. She looked up, making eye contact with Joshua, who quickly averted his eyes from her.
She felt tears begin to fill her eyes, as she reached down, picking up her purse.
"Janelle.." Joshua Said in an almost warning tone.
"No." Janelle Said. "Not now."
She turned around, opening the door again and stepping out of the apartment.
"Janelle!" She heard Joshua shout, causing her to begin jogging away.
She quickly made her way down the stairs and out of the apartment, trying to hold back the tears that were forming in her ocean blue eyes. She ran out into the parking lot, collapsing onto the concrete with a loud sob. She covered her eyes with her hands, sitting there on her knees for about a minute, before she realised that she needed somewhere to go.
She had forgotten her shoes, so she was only wearing socks, and the only thing she had with her was her purse, which, thankfully had some of her most important belongings in it. She needed to go somewhere; she needed to think.
Abby was laying on the couch with her sleeping fiancé, Kenneth, who had just gotten home from work about an hour ago. The two had been watching reruns of 'Gilmore Girls,' but now, only Abby paid it any attention, considering that he was fast asleep.
Abby munched on a bag of popcorn as she watched the episode intently, but a sudden, frantic knock broke her concentration.
She looked up, hearing the knock again.
Her eyes widened, and she looked over at her fiancé. She shook him awake, and he immediately looked at her, a confused expression on his face. "What?"
"There's a loud knock!" She whisper-Shouted. "It sounds like a murderer!"
"A murderer?" He asked, clearly trying not to smile. "How do you know?"
"It's really loud!" She Said again.
There was another knock, and she pushed him a little. "Go answer it!"
"Okay, Okay." He laughed a little, bringing himself to his feet.
He made his way over to the door, unlocking it, before opening it. Abby watched as his expression quickly turned into a worried one, and she heard soft sobs coming from the other side of the door.
"Is Abby here?" She heard a familiar voice ask though tears.
Kenneth nodded. "Yeah, She is," he said, putting his hand on her back. "Please, Come in."
Abby stood as she saw Janelle walk into the apartment, looking at her worriedly. Her face was covered in tears, and her hair was a mess, not to mention how she wasn't wearing any shoes and had clearly walked all the way there.
"Janelle, what's going on?" She Asked, reaching out and rubbing her friend's arm.
Janelle let out a couple of sobs, before swallowing. "J-Joshua cheated on me.."
"What?" Abby Asked.
She knew this would happen. She told Janelle she shouldn't trust him again. But right now, it wasn't about saying 'I told you so;' Her friend was in pain and needed comfort.
She took her by the arm, leading her over to the couch and helping her sit down. Janelle immediately clung onto her, so she hugged her tightly, rubbing her back as she cried loudly. Kenneth looked at the two of them, and Abby motioned for him to go into the other room with her head. This was a girl problem, and Janelle would probably feel better talking about it if it was just the two of them.
"Janelle, can you tell me what happened?" She Asked gently, and Janelle nodded, pulling away from her.
"He didn't come and pick me up tonight.." she mumbled. "I just assumed that he had fallen asleep or something. But when I got there...another woman walked in.." Tears began to stream down her face, and she sighed. "I trusted him...why did I trust him?"
Abby rubbed her arm. I told you so, Part of her wanted to say, but she bit her tongue.
"I understand.." she said softly. "You loved him."
"After all he did to me.." Janelle Said quietly. "Why the hell did I go back to him? Why do I still love him?"
"You can't still love him after this.." Abby shook her head.
Janelle bit her lower lip, a few more tears streaming down her flushed cheeks. "But I still do.."
She covered her eyes with her hands, and Abby patted her shoulder. "You've had a long day," She Said. "Why don't you get a shower? It'll help you relax a bit."
"I don't have any clothes." Janelle mumbled into her hands.
"You can borrow some of mine." Abby Replied, bringing herself to her feet. "I'll be right back."
She made her way down the hallway and into their bedroom, where Kenneth sat on the bed.
"Is she okay?" He asked quietly, and she shook her head.
"That stupid bastard!" She Shouted, kicking the bedpost. "I wanna fucking kill him!"
Kenneth stood, walking over and wrapping his arms around her. She sighed, letting a few tears fall down her cheeks.
"I told her.." she mumbled.
"I know you did." He said, rubbing her back.
She hates this. She hated that her friend was hurting, all because of that douche. What the hell was wrong with him? Didn't he see what he had? Why did Janelle keep giving him chances? How could she still love him?
A sudden thought came to her, and she knew she had to tell Ryan. He would be able to help, she was sure of it.
She pulled away from Kenneth, pulling her phone out of the pocket of her hoodie. She immediately went to text Ryan, and Kenneth looked at her curiously.
"Who're you texting?" He asked.
"Someone who can help." She Said simply, before sending her text.
Joshua cheated.
Meanwhile, Ryan was still at the bar and grill, slightly tipsy, as the rest of the band carried on, having already had much more to drink than him.
Eddie was telling a story that was causing them to laugh, but Ryan was too deep in thought to be paying attention. He felt rather tired, and he wished he could just go home, except, now he worried about his friends getting home safely. He'd have to stay to make sure they had a driver, or at least got a taxi.
"Hey, Ryan!" Drew called, pulling Ryan out of his thoughts. "Need another beer?"
Ryan shook his head. "I've still got some." He said, lifting up his bottle of beer which still had half of its contents left. "Thanks, though." He mumbled, before Drew went back to laughing and talking with the others.
Ryan felt his phone vibrate in the pocket of his jean jacket, and he stuck his hand in, sliding it out. When he saw that it was a text from Abby, he immediately opened it up.
His face fell when he read the short sentence she had sent.
"Shit.." he muttered to himself.
This Joshua really had some nerve. Did he really think he could take advantage of Janelle like that?
Ryan stood up abruptly, causing everyone to look at him.
"Ryan, what's up?" Zach asked, and he shook his head.
"Nothing," he mumbled. "I just have to use the bathroom."
He turned, speed walking towards the bathroom as he stared at the text Abby had sent. His head was spinning with thoughts; was Janelle Okay? How was she taking this? Where was she?
He stepped into the men's bathroom, closing the door behind him and quickly pressing the call icon on Abby's contact. He brought the phone to his ear, lifting up his hand to bite his nails anxiously.
After just a couple of rings, there was an answer, but Ryan didn't even let her speak first.
"Where's Janelle? Is she okay?" He asked quickly.
"She's at my apartment, she's showering right now." Abby answered him. "As for being okay, I'm not really sure. She's really heartbroken."
"That asshole." Ryan growled.
"I know, I wanna kill him." Abby mumbled.
"Who does he think he is?"
"I don't know."
"What an idiot." Ryan carried on, clenching his fists as he paced back and forth around by the sinks.
"Ryan, she still loves him." Abby stated, causing him to stop.
"What?" He asked, his mind refusing to believe what he'd just heard.
"She still Loves him." She repeated. "I don't know how. I think she's really confused."
"Clearly." Ryan Said. "How on earth could she still love him? It's clear he doesn't give a shit about her."
"I know." Abby sighed. "That's why I need your help."
"What can I do?"
"Can you come over tomorrow, maybe help me convince her to leave him?" She Asked. "Plus, I think she could use some support from another one of her friends."
Ryan nodded. "Yeah, I can do that." He said.
"Good...oh, she's getting out of the shower," Abby Said. "Talk later?"
"Yeah." Ryan nodded again, before she hung up.
He pulled the phone away from his ear, staring off into space as he thought. He was heartbroken for Janelle, and at the same time, incredibly angry with Joshua. He clearly didn't see what he had; Ryan hardly knew her, yet he knew that Janelle was wonderful, and he'd love her if she was his. He hated seeing her mistreated by some idiot that she still believed loved her.
Ryan ran a hand through his hair, letting out a soft sigh as he shoved his phone back in his pocket. He pushed away the feelings of being upset, before opening the door, making his way back out into the restaurant to rejoin his band mates.
