Chapter Four: Distant Connections
The evening air was crisp as Piper and Taehyung stepped out of their apartment building, the streetlights casting long shadows across the pavement. Piper pulled her coat tighter, feeling the cool breeze as they started walking. It was a little past eight, the night still young, and the city was coming alive with the hum of cars and the chatter of people heading out for their own adventures.
"You sure about this?" Piper asked, glancing sideways at Taehyung.
He grinned, his eyes twinkling with excitement. "Come on, Pipes. We've been cooped up for weeks. A night out will do us good."
Piper laughed softly, shaking her head. "I know, I know. But clubs aren't really my scene."
Taehyung waved a hand dismissively. "You say that now, but once we're inside, you'll be thanking me."
Piper wasn't so sure, but she appreciated his enthusiasm. It was hard not to be swept up in his energy when he was this excited. She'd spent the past half hour getting ready, opting for a simple black dress that hugged her figure and a pair of boots that were both stylish and comfortable enough for dancing—if it came to that. She'd even let Taehyung convince her to put on a bit of makeup, her lips painted a deep shade of red that she wasn't entirely used to.
They turned the corner and joined the flow of people heading toward the club. As they approached, Piper noticed the line stretching around the block, a long snake of eager partygoers chatting and laughing as they waited for their turn to get inside. She felt her shoulders tense, her confidence wavering.
"Looks like it's going to take forever," she murmured, eyeing the line.
Taehyung flashed her a reassuring smile. "Don't worry. I know the bouncer."
Piper raised an eyebrow, a smile tugging at her lips. "You've got connections now?"
"Always had them," he replied with a wink. "Just never needed to use them until tonight."
As they approached the front of the line, Piper watched as Taehyung made eye contact with the bouncer—a tall, burly man with a beard and a no-nonsense expression. But when his eyes landed on Taehyung, the bouncer's face broke into a wide smile.
He reached out, pulling Taehyung into a quick embrace.
"Hey, man! Long time no see," the bouncer said, his voice a deep rumble.
Taehyung laughed, clapping him on the back. "Yeah, it's been a while. Hope you're doing well."
"Better now that I'm seeing you. Go on in," the bouncer replied, stepping aside and waving them through.
Piper felt a wave of relief wash over her as they bypassed the line. "You weren't kidding."
"See?" Taehyung said with a grin as they slipped past the velvet ropes. "Stick with me, and you'll always get the VIP treatment."
They entered the club, and the atmosphere hit Piper like a wave. The music was loud, the bass pulsing through the floor and vibrating in her chest. The room was packed, people moving in a sea of bodies, the lights flashing in a kaleidoscope of colors—reds, blues, and purples that danced across the crowd. The smell of sweat, perfume, and alcohol mingled in the air, creating an electric, intoxicating energy that filled the space.
Piper felt a thrill run through her as she took it all in. She'd forgotten what it was like to be surrounded by so much life, so much movement. People were laughing, dancing, and shouting over the music, their drinks clinking as they toasted to the night.
Taehyung leaned close, his voice barely audible over the music. "See? It's not so bad."
She smiled, feeling the excitement catch up with her. "Not bad at all."
He grabbed her hand, pulling her deeper into the club. They weaved through the crowd, past groups of friends posing for photos and couples dancing close, until they found a spot near the bar. Taehyung signaled to the bartender, who nodded in acknowledgment.
Piper scanned the room as she waited for their drinks. The lights continued to flash, illuminating faces in brief, vibrant bursts. She saw people from all walks of life—young professionals unwinding after a long week, friends celebrating birthdays, and others simply out to lose themselves in the music.
The bartender slid their drinks across the counter, and Taehyung handed one to Piper. "Here's to a night out," he said, raising his glass. She lifted hers, clinking it against his. "To a night out."
The drink was cold and sweet, the taste of vodka and fruit lingering on her tongue as she took a sip. The alcohol sent a warm rush through her, the music and lights blending together in a dizzying, thrilling way. Piper felt herself start to relax, the initial nerves fading as she absorbed the atmosphere around her.
Taehyung's eyes lit up as he scanned the dance floor. "Let's dance."
Piper hesitated, her eyes darting to the packed floor. "I'm not sure..."
"Come on!" He tugged at her hand, grinning. "Just one dance. I promise you'll have fun."
Piper couldn't resist his enthusiasm. She downed the rest of her drink, feeling the warmth spread through her, and let him pull her toward the crowd. They found a spot where the music was loudest, the bass thumping through her entire body. The lights flashed in rhythm with the beat, casting a glow over the dancing bodies around them.
Taehyung started moving to the music, his energy infectious. Piper watched him for a moment, feeling the music pulse through her veins, before she let herself go. She swayed to the rhythm, letting the sound take over as she moved with the crowd.
The energy of the room was electric, and for a moment, she felt like she was part of something bigger—a single thread in the fabric of the night.
Taehyung laughed, spinning her around, and she couldn't help but laugh too. The music, the lights, the energy—it was all exhilarating, and she felt a rush of freedom she hadn't felt in a long time. She danced, letting herself forget everything but the beat of the music and the thrill of the moment.
As they danced, the crowd shifted, and Piper caught sight of someone across the room. Her movements slowed as her eyes focused on a familiar face—Jungkook. He was standing at the edge of a balcony, leaning casually against the railing of the VIP section. His eyes scanned the dancing crowd, detached but alert, and for a moment, she wondered if he'd noticed her.
She turned away quickly, her heart pounding in her chest. Why does he have to be everywhere? she thought, feeling a mix of frustration and something she couldn't quite name. She tried to ignore him, focusing on Taehyung and the music, but the awareness of Jungkook's presence lingered in the back of her mind.
Taehyung noticed the change in her mood, leaning in close. "You okay?"
Piper forced a smile. "Yeah, just... thought I saw someone I know."
He followed her gaze, his eyes scanning the room. "Who?"
"Doesn't matter," she said quickly, shaking her head. "It's nothing."
Taehyung raised an eyebrow but didn't push further. "Alright."
Piper took a deep breath, pushing the thought of Jungkook aside. He grinned, pulling her back into the rhythm of the music, and she let herself get lost in the moment once again. The flashing lights, the thumping bass, the crowd—it was all she needed to drown out the thoughts of everything outside the club. She danced with Taehyung, laughing and moving to the beat, determined to let the night be theirs.
And for a while, it was.
High above the dance floor, in the seclusion of the VIP section, Jungkook stood leaning against the railing, his gaze fixed on the crowd below. The section was guarded by security, providing a barrier between him and the pulsating life of the club.
The music throbbed through the venue, a rhythmic heartbeat that echoed his own. Despite the distance, his attention was drawn to two figures moving together in rhythm to the beat.
There was something about the girl—Piper, He couldn't place where he knew her from initially until it clicked; the awkward encounter at the pharmacy. The memory was vivid, her face picture perfect, the discomfort of that day lingered.
He watched her now, laughing and dancing with Taehyung, her movements free and unguarded. They seemed close, very close, and something in the way they interacted made him assume they were more than friends.
He watched as she leaned closer to Taehyung, their faces illuminated briefly by the flashing lights. His mind flashed back to that day—how he'd rushed in, trying to stay out of sight, not wanting to draw any attention.
He hadn't expected to bump into anyone, let alone knock a stranger's things out of her arms.
The way she looked at him—confused, maybe annoyed—had thrown him off. And in his rush to defuse the situation, he'd done the first thing that came to mind: pull out his wallet and throw money at her, like it would somehow make up for the inconvenience.
He cringed inwardly at the memory. He hadn't meant to be so dismissive. It was just... a reflex. He was used to dealing with people who expected something from him—money, attention, favors—and he had reacted without thinking. When he'd shoved the signed photo into her hand, he thought it was the easiest way to keep things calm, to keep her from causing a scene.
But Piper hadn't reacted the way he expected. She hadn't seemed impressed or eager—just confused. And he remembered the moment of panic in her eyes when he'd thrown the money her way. It was like she didn't know whether to be offended or amused.
Jungkook's eyes now traced their steps, noting the ease between them, a connection that seemed so effortless. It sparked a longing in him, a wish for something similar—a connection that didn't need to be romantic, just real and trustworthy.
Someone who would stand by him no matter what. In his world of fleeting stares and shallow conversations, such bonds were rare, and watching them, he felt an ache for something he couldn't quite reach.
His life, filled with luxury and adoration, was a dream for many, but it came at the cost of genuine relationships and heartfulled memories. The more he watched the two, the more he wondered about the last time he had that kind of uncomplicated friendship.
Everyone around him now had agendas, contracts binding not just their work but their personal lives too. The thought was suffocating.
Lost in his thoughts, he barely noticed when a fellow artist approached him. It was Jay Park, known for his smooth voice and charismatic stage presence, but also a person who understood the complexities of their industry.
"Watching them won't fill that void, you know," Jay said, following Jungkook's gaze to the dance floor. His voice was low, almost lost in the music.
Jungkook glanced at him, a small frown forming. "It's not about that. It's just... they seem genuine, you know?"
Jay nodded, leaning on the railing beside him. "They do. But remember, we signed up for this—signed away the normal to live the extraordinary. It comes at a cost."
Jungkook's expression hardened slightly. "Does it always have to be at the cost of real connections?"
"It doesn't have to be," Jay replied, his eyes scanning the club. "But the sacrifices we make—the privacy we give up, the hours we pour into this life—they change how people see us and how we see them. It's a luxury in itself to trust someone without wondering what they want from you."
Jungkook considered his words, his gaze drifting back to Piper and Taehyung. "Do you think it's possible, then? To find something real amidst all this?" he gestured around them, encompassing the glitz of their surroundings.
Jay smiled, a wistful edge to it. "I think it's rare, but not impossible. You've got to be willing to look harder, push deeper. And maybe take a step back from this," he waved at the expanse of the club, "every once in a while to see it."
The advice lingered in Jungkook's mind as he watched Piper throw her head back in laughter, Taehyung's hand steady on her back. Maybe what he needed was a perspective shift, a way to see beyond the immediate glitz and find people who could look beyond the fame.
As Jay moved away to join another group, Jungkook stayed at the railing a while longer, thinking about the sacrifices and the rare glimpses of truth he encountered.
His life of luxury had its perks, but tonight, the shine of it seemed dull compared to the simple joy he saw on the dance floor.
Eventually, he turned away, the echo of the music following him as he walked back through the VIP section. His mind was full of thoughts about connections and the realness they required. Maybe it was time to start looking for those, to build something lasting amid the fleeting glamor.
But as he left the overlook, the sight of Piper laughing freely, completely at ease with Taehyung, remained etched in his mind—a reminder of what he might be missing.
