My Heathers 2 Idea
Heathers 2 Proposal
It's been over twenty-five years since Heathers, the dark comedy cult classic. This is my idea for a sequel based on the tv show that was almost made for Bravo in 2012.
Premise: Veronica Meyer returns to Sherwood, Ohio with her husband Lane, seventeen year old daughter, Brianna, and sixteen year old son Austin. Brianna and Austin are enrolled at Westerburg High, where she encounters the offspring of some of the worst possible former classmates of Veronica: the Heathers' daughters, the Mias. Mia Dawson, Mia Kelly, and their unrelated friend Mia Rowan are every bit as evil as their mothers, with the advantages of twenty-first century technology and social acceptance of "Mean Girls." Even more surprisingly, Big Bud Dean had another son with a younger wife years after JD's death. Unsurprisingly, Brianna is intrigued by Caleb Dean, who may just have the same violent tendencies as Jason. Even over twenty-five years later, not much has changed about Westerburg High. And the lack of progress might just be the institution's undoing.
Characters:
(Note: actors casted only if original actor can't really be traced/is deceased, or original character)
Adults
Veronica Meyer - now 43 years old and married to Lane Meyer, Veronica has become a very successful journalist/author. A curiosity about whatever became of her hometown and the people who stayed there causes her to take on a yearlong investigation of Sherwood, just see if the town is as sordid as she remembered it. Unfortunately, the memories of the tragedies that occurred there still plague her, and the Deans' teenage son with an unsettling relation to JD cause her to regret the move.
Heather Dawson - the former queen of mean after Heather Chandler's death still reigns as the head of Sherwood's PTA. Other than trading in bulimia for Xanax and Aqua Net for Mystic tanning, Heather Duke is essentially the same mean girl she was in 1989. Married to nerd-turned-Fortune 500 CEO Peter Dawson, Heather is also as insecure as she was before. Her daughter Mia causes her to lust after her youth, and she is very jealous of her looks. Scheming as ever, she attempts (and succeeds) in seducing Mia's boyfriend and Heather Kelly's son, KJ Kelly.
Heather Kelly (Sarah Jessica Parker) - Vice President of the PTA. Even more insecure than Heather Dawson. She does her best at being a cool mom with her daughter Mia, son Kurt Jr., and their friends. She married Brad Kelly, Kurt's cousin, right out of college. Much like Heather Dawson, she also clings to being young. Unlike Heather Dawson, she longs to be best friends with her teenage daughter, and to be a part of her social circle. She has become less catty over the years, though, and becomes friendly with Veronica, whom she is still grateful towards for preventing her attempted suicide.
Betty Finn - still single, Ms. Finn is an English teacher at Westerburg High. Considered the hottest teacher in school, she has an influence over many of her students, especially Brianna. Peter Dawson somewhat regrets his marriage to the cruel Heather, and lusts after Betty Finn. She seems to return his feelings, but is unsure due to his marriage to Heather and her own morals. She becomes less uncomfortable with the idea of an affair with Peter after she discovers the barely legal liaison Heather is engaged in with one of her students.
Peter Dawson (Ben Stiller) - the Fortune 500 CEO of a software company, Peter is living the nerd dream: Rich beyond his wildest dreams, married to one of the beautiful popular girls who used to torment him, and the envy of the classmates who once looked down on him. Despite this, Peter is unsatisfied with his life. His wife Heather doesn't seem to care about him, his daughter Mia is slowly evolving into a cruel human being, and money can't buy happiness. His one regret is not acknowledging Betty Finn in the past, and being forced to be in contact with her despite not having a chance.
Brad Kelly (Leiv Schreiber) - Husband to Heather Kelly and father of Mia and Kurt Kelly Jr., Brad is a near-clone of his late cousin, Kurt. The football coach, as well as Phys Ed/Health at Westerburg, Brad is known as a hard ass and a bully, despite his status as a faculty member. More likely to join in the harassment than break things up on any victim's behalf, Brad believes that high school is basically oriented around survival of the fittest. He is also infamous for sexual harassment of female students, and only hasn't been fired because the football team has been reigning national champions under his guidance.
Lane Meyer - Veronica's husband and Brianna and Austin's father, Lane Meyer is also a journalist, planning to describe his experience of moving back to the suburbs for a year to Rolling Stone. Initially after moving to Sherwood, he figured it seemed like a normal suburban town, almost reminiscent of Greendale, California, where he grew up. As he begins to interact with Veronica's former classmates, and meet his children's new peers, he is disturbed to see just how dysfunctional the other residents of Sherwood really are.
Big Bud Dean (Jon Voight) - Still as cool and calculating as ever, Bud has easily moved on after the death of his son, JD, conceiving a "second chance with [his] third wife", Caleb. Now onto trophy wife number five, twenty-five year old Sky, Bud Dean has permanently settled into Sherwood with Caleb, and a fifteen year old daughter by the same woman, Charlie. Incredibly uninvolved with his children, he instead travels "on business" instead of moving his family around, assuming that that was what caused JD's unfortunate "suicide."
Sky Dean (Lyndsy Fonseca) - A twenty-five-year "trophy wife," Sky actually holds a position at Westerburg High as a guidance counselor. She has limited interest in her students' needs, and blatantly prefers to the popular kids over all others, including her stepchildren. Sky has a tendency to get involved in Westerburg rumors and drama, and is essential to the school's rumor mill. She gossips, schemes, and picks on the students as much as the Mias. She has a crush on Lane Meyer, and desires to seduce him away from his wife.
Students
Brianna Meyer (Chloë Grace Moretz) - At seventeen years old, Brianna is wise beyond her years, if not slightly neurotic (after all, she is the child of Veronica Sawyer and Lane Meyer). She grew up in New York City and attended Hunter College High School until her senior year, when her family moved to Sherwood. Needless to say, Brianna was not thrilled. Somewhat alternative, with more interest in RiffTrax, TV Tropes, Let's Plays, and John Waters than Pretty Little Liars, Facebook, boy bands, and John Green, Brianna isn't exactly tapped to become popular at Westerburg. Despite this, her blonde good looks cause her to be of interest to the Mias. Against her better judgment, Brianna falls into the same trap her mother did, and gets sucked into the dark world of Westerburg's elite, also falling for Caleb Dean, JD's would-be half-brother.
Austin Meyer (Nolan Gould) - A sixteen year old junior at Westerburg, Austin is more determined to fit in than Brianna. Unlike Brianna, his awkward appearance and social ineptitude (again, son of Lane Meyer and Veronica Sawyer) don't exactly endear him to the popular crowd. He falls in love with Mia Kelly, the junior Mia, and she seems to reciprocate his feelings. Unfortunately, being at opposite ends of the social spectrum causes them to be a quintessential piece of any high school drama: star-crossed (later secret) lovers. A victim of the jocks' taunting, Austin also attracts the attention of another girl: Charlie Dean, a quiet Goth sophomore.
Mia Dawson (Jodelle Ferland) - A seventeen year old senior, Mia is the eldest Mia and their de facto leader. Described by Brianna as "an unholy mixture of every Alpha Bitch possible," Mia is both the most hated, most envied, and most desired at Westerburg High. She dates KJ (Kurt Jr), the leader of the jocks. She secretly envies Brianna, and sees her as a threat to her popularity. She only befriends the new girl under the premise of keeping friends close, and potential enemies closer. Unlike her mother, she is more secure in her appearance, albeit obsessed with "upkeep and maintenance." Mia Dawson has a need for total control, and often most angered when she is not the center of attention.
Mia Kelly (AJ Michalka) - A sixteen year old junior, Mia Kelly is the Mia in Austin's class. In addition to being a Mia, she is the head of the cheerleading squad, sister to the quarterback, KJ Kelly, and editor of the yearbook. Infamous for possibly having affairs with adult teachers, and various hook ups with other students, Mia is known as the "slut Mia." Despite her promiscuous reputation, she has a friendly disposition, is at the top of her class, and seems to have a crush on Austin Meyer. Despite the latter, she constantly pursues other hook ups to maintain her popularity and avoid losing face with her friends. Of all the Mias, Mia Kelly is the nicest to Brianna.
Mia Rowan (Bella Thorne) - A fifteen year old sophomore, Mia Rowan is the youngest of the Mias. More interested in seizing Mia Dawson's power above all else, she is also unnerved by Brianna's arrival. She also has something of a crush on Caleb Dawson, who only casually flirts with her on occasion. When Brianna "steals him away," Mia becomes determined to get rid of her in whatever way she can. Her drive leads her to scheme a way to destroy Brianna from the inside: befriending her, infiltrating her family, and using whatever she can find out to expose and humiliate Brianne. It is later shown that Caleb is a placeholder for Mia's resentment, and that she might have a crush on Brianna.
KJ (Kurt Jr.) Kelly (Ross Lynch) - KJ Kelly is the most popular boy at Westerburg High. A seventeen year old senior, he's the student body president, and boyfriend to Mia Dawson. He and his friends are the typical jerk jocks, but KJ is starting to outgrow that behavior. As of the start of his senior year, he is determined to "be less of a dick, and more of a cool guy." This change of behavior is not welcomed by the other jocks, and disturbs his girlfriend. KJ is somewhat worried about his growing interest in Brianna, the new girl, and decreasing attraction toward Mia, as his father warns him not to "pussy out" his senior year.
Caleb Dean (Dylan O'Brien) - a seventeen year old senior, Caleb is considered a mysterious outsider. An object of lust for many of the girls, and a source of mystery for the boys, he appears to be above the status quo. He shocks the school by taking interest in another student for the first time: Brianna Meyer. As she becomes a member of the Mias, he seems to be her anchor to reality, sharing many of the same interests as Brianna. His dark sense of humor, bad boy persona, delinquent status, and troubled home life further entice Brianna and are a red flag to Veronica. Thanks to the JD incident, Caleb was once heavily medicated, with Adderall, Prozac, and even antipsychotics, despite being potentially misdiagnosed by a quack doctor. He eventually stopped taking all of the medications after visitiong another doctor, who declared that he did not have ADHD, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or anything of the things Big Bud's hired quack diagnosed him with. Despite this, he doesn't seem to be as deviant and psychopathic as JD...yet. He does really like Slushies though...
Charlotte "Charlie" Dean (Taylor Momsen) - a fifteen year old sophomore, Charlie is Caleb's shy Goth younger sister. She shares a few classes with the juniors, and has a crush on Austin Meyer. She loves her elder brother, and is jealous of her stepmother for domination her father's attention. Before Bud married Sky, he did seem to have a soft side towards her. Later, though, he lost interest in Charlie. She enjoys drawing, pop punk music, and anime. Because of her introverted nature, Charlie comes off as cold and harsh toward Austin, and often has trouble expressing her feelings, be they romantic or platonic.
